Best bet for Sushi/Sashimi. I'm not an expert on seafood nor can I admit I know much about Japanese food. However, I was in Japan once and ate sushi/sashimi made by the Japanese masters there and it was amazing. Comparing what I ate there to this place, well it is good though this restaurant can never replicate what I experienced in Japan. Maybe it is in the brand of sushi rice used. Maybe it's because the fish did not come right out of the seas before hitting the chopping board, therefore it tasted 'good' instead of 'excellent'. Either way I'm in it for the raw more so then the rice itself. The types of fish they served up did not have a smell to it and just melted in your mouth like butter so sure, it's good... Go ahead and try it for yourself.
Sushi. We frequently venture downtown to eat here on weeknights between 4:30 and 6pm. Many of the rolls are 30% off at the bar/front dinning room.
It's very good sushi for the price, though I feel they are quite heavy on the rice. I'd consider this place my #2 sushi place and my #1 Hiabachi. I know it's more than other places, but the food is expertly prepared. My medium steak, is medium, my husbands rare is rare and my mom's well done... is done to our requests. The sauce is perfect.
Their Philly rolls are great, their spicy tuna the perfect amount of spice, and their spider rolls have very generous amounts of crispy legs and thick chunks of crab meat. My three favorites all done perfectly!!
When eating at the bar for the sushi special, we always have great service.
We've had a few bad experiences at the Hiabachi, but all of those have been waitress related rather than the cooks and the majority have occured at Nakashima's (sister location same owners) in Appleton. One experience at the Hiabachi left us with burned onions and sprouts. In the cooks defense, it was because he'd gone to look for the waitress as the veggies cooked. The table had been more than 1/2 through the meal without any rice or a drink check. It was quite pathetic and we felt bad tipping low since its a tip share place. When she showed up, she still didn't bring rice.
We left without our ice cream... because she also disappeared for 15 minutes at that point too. Even the cook was confused where she was off too, as she wasn't even covering other hiabachi tables... she was just missing.
We've gone dozens of times and the majority of times things go well.
Watch out the week of Xmas. My birthday is on the 27th and every year they are understaffed on weeknights. If it falls on weekend, things go much better!
Sushi is pretty good and the atmosphere is nice. Great location on college ave. The wine list is mediocre- recommend sake or beer instead. Aks
Great japanese. I've eaten here a few times and never had a bad experience. Good food and service.
...However I do know food, and I know fresh food, and sushi I was served at Katsu-Ya was exceptionally fresh and beautifully displayed. I ventured to sample offerings that included larger cuts of raw fish, and I loved every bite. It reminded me how much of a treat sushi can be and why any foodie should be able to appreciate it – rather than relying on oversized portions to gorge on, sushi uses petite portions to highlight the taste and texture of this exquisitely prepared cuisine. If there were a linear foodie scale, sushi would be on the opposite end of the all you can eat pizza buffet.
Katsu-Ya of Japan Sushi
My family and I had a good time at the restaurant. The only thing that I would say was a bit confusing was choosing between the 2 dining options. It took the hostess some time to explain it to us as well as the couple that was before us. Maybe there is a way to get the explanation simplified perhaps with visuals. Once we were sitted though we enjoyed our food. We were able to cook our own dishes and had plenty of rice. The meats were sliced and prepared well, bit sized. My daughter enjoyed the sushi and mochi dessert. The total bill for us was over a $135 for 4 of us. The experience was nice, the ambience was great, and we were full.
WOW! AMAZING SERVICE! Food was delicious as always but the staff, wow! I was so impressed by how accommodating they were. They went above and beyond my expectations. We were there celebrating my son's birthday. The staff offered to store our cake and then when we were ready, they brought our cakes out with sparklers and enthusiasm! The chefs were fantastic and our server Kat, was absolutely superb! Kudos and respect to all the staff giving 110%!!!!
I love almost everything here! Except the price is a little bit high. They have different plates and plates styles for same food!
I love rainbow rows the best ! Strong recommendation for raw seafood lovers! It literally melting down in your mouth!
Curry and appetizers are also good. But the light is too dim for me. But still awesome experience there!
We did not plan on coming here. Just was walking by. It was very good. Price about average for a hibachi dinner. The atmosphere was great and the little touches like shrimp at the beginning and sherbet at the end was good. We had one iffy situation where someone on the table with us said her meat was not right. (We didn't ask what she meant). They made her something else.
We would return.
First time here for my wife, daughter and I. Daughters boyfriend had been here once. Had hibachi style, our chef was very entertaining and food was great. Portions were good too. Overall a great dining experience.

I got there as they opened and ate at the bar. Good sushi 🍣, nigiri, and appetizers.
Was a great experience went on a Saturday night and expected to have to wait went to bar area to enjoy a drink and some small plates while we did so. Once we got our table for grilling our food we proceeded to enjoy the experience of being to cook ourselves it was fun and an overall great time. Staff was friendly place was clean. No complaints
I brought 2 family members for their first sushi and it was phenomenal! Some of the best sushi I've had in years. Our waiter, Tony, was extremely knowledgeable and helpful(give him a raise)! It really rounded out the whole experience having such great staff. We will definitely be back!
