My friend took me here as a “Welcome to Austin” dinner and boy did I request for Terry Black’s on my last night too. Food is divine 🤤 the mains and the sides are equally good, explosion of flavours and the sauce compliments the barbecue well, the Staff are always friendly and helpful. I brought home the rub and sauce set and I’m glad I did!
We had the brisket the pork spare ribs and the beef ribs and the were all outstanding the spicy sauce was my favourite there was a que but worth the wait
I’m probably not gonna help settle the rivalry between them and Blacks BBQ...but OMG.. Terry Blacks has some the best BBQ I’ve ever had in my life. The Ribs were so flavorful and ready to fall off the bone. The brisket was super moist. The green beans were the freshest I’ve ever had and the Mac and Cheese was just on point. I even ate the cole slaw and I dislike it normally. Make sure you grab a beer and some Banana Pudding to go with your meal you won’t regret it.
Excellent restaurant. I go all over the country as a pilot, and this is a must try if you are in Austin, Texas. Everything is cooked fresh and placed right in front of you to pick out. Variety of sides, Mac n Cheese, green beans, cream corn, etc. which you pick out and then pick out which meat you would like (brisket, sausage, etc.). Not a big menu, but doesn’t have to be when it’s made just right. I had the brisket sandwich, and I smiled after my first bite.
#7 stop in our Texas Monthly 50 Bbq Challenge.
Did dinner. This place is like a Rudy's in format.
You walk in, get in line and snake past the bottles of beer and wine, etc. Then you dish out your choices of sides (the potato salad is exempletory). Then you hsve one of the folks cut off your meats (which you pay for by the pound or portion thereof) and place them on your tray. Select sodas if desired and then you pay after which you carry your tray to a table and consume your purchases.
The sign says 1/3, 1/2, 3/4, and 1 lb portions. Don't believe it. You can select as much or as little of many of the things as you want. The sausage however is sold by the link and the ribs by the rib. You pay according to weight which includes the bone.
Observations:
The ribs were good, well prepared and tasty.
The turkey was excellent with lots of flavor and well smoked. Thought it was the tastiest of the meats.
The brisket was melt in your mouth tender and very flavorful. Another great choice.
The sausage was nice and course with good flavor. Definatly worth getting a link and splitting it among a group of two or three.
The beans were smoky and tasty.
The cole slaw was good.
The potato salad was stellar. It was made with redskin potatoes (with the skin on). It had a nice chunky consistency with a creamy mayo-like base and seemed to have black pepper, salt, green onion, and cilantro among its ingrediants. Did not detect mustard which made for a different and very tasty offering.
Service through the line was personable and efficient. Folks were knowledgable and efficient.

If Heaven was a smokehouse!
Trust me you’ll feel the same after the aromas greet you at the door! Love the sides as well!
Best in town Brisket my vote 👌🏿👏🏿
I Got to try the beef rib next visit.
ribs were decent (a bit fatty for my taste) but the brisket was dynamite.
Quality barbecue is getting much easier to find in Austin, TX. The barbecue revolution there is really amazing when you think back to a decade ago and there not being any truly great barbecue joints in the city limits. On my most recent visit to Austin, I visited Terry Black's Barbecue. Terry is a relative of the family that operates the famous Black's Barbecue in Lockhart, TX.
As my first Texan BBQ experience, this place did NOT disappoint. The brisket was pull apart, mouthwatering, delicious, and cooked to perfection. The sides were delicious... I had a soft spot for the potato salad especially. There was tons of sauces to choose from and the cafeteria style just added to the character of the place. Not to mention the fun decor outside and on the patio made it very welcoming!
It's all about the rub! Don't know what they rub their meats with but it's soo good that you don't even need to put any sauce on them. The ribs fall off the bone, the brisket were cooked to perfection. Good ambience, kid-friendly and they got live music on the patio too!

My all around favorite BBQ.. I would have to say the brisket and ribs are pretty tasty. The turkey is very tender. The sides are my favorite of all the BBQ joints in Austin. Love that Mac and cheese. Fair prices and good service. The sauce is the best I have tasted in Austin. . There may be better meat out there, but not by much.. The only places I have had better meat at had very disappointing sides. The other great thing was the speed at which you got from door to seat. There will be no 2 hr wait here.
Great local barbecue without all the pomp and hype of the rest. Go here for good barbecue without super long tines. Better selection of sides than most of the other bbq spots in town. Think of it as one step up from Rudy's in atmosphere, but on par for taste.
I'm not easily impressed, but DAMN, this place can cook meat! Had the beef ribs and brisket, easily the best I've ever had.
What else do you need?. A la carte sides were very good. They had good selection of drinks including glass bottled sodas. I grabbed a half liter bottle of Mexican CocaCola. The meat was very good. I got a beef rib, sausage and some brisket. The brisket was pretty good, the beef rib was great, both could hold their own against the other big named BBQ places.
There was practically no line (which seems rare for a BBQ place in Austin) so that was really nice, no waiting in line for hours.
I will definitely go back.

We were originally going to try another place today but they were closed so headed here for some 'cue. We ordered brisket, ribs, and sausage. The brisket was excellent and meltingly tender. Predominant flavors were salt, pepper and smoke, traditional Texas barbecue. Bark was nice. Only drawback is that a few of the pieces were a bit greasy. (satisfying, just rich). The ribs are pork spareribs and they were tender, meaty and moist. Nice balanced flavor. We got the jalapeño cheddar sausage and it was okay but nothing to write home about. I would definitely come back for the brisket and ribs.
Having been to the excellent Black's Barbecue in Lockhart, I was rather excited to discover that the Black family would be opening a location in Austin. We patiently watched it being renovated while the smoke house was being built and it was only a matter of time before my picinic-basket-raiding partner Boo Boo Bear and I both decided we needed to investigate the meaty goodness of Terry Black's Barbecue. Upon entering, a large sign explains how it works; “grab a plate, choose your sides, get your meat.”
While all of the sides and cobblers looked delicious, I wanted a traditional barbecue experience and opted for small sides of barbecue beans, cole slaw, potato salad and macaroni and cheese. All were high-quality barbecue fare, though the potato salad definitely outshined the others with a perfect mix of seasoning, creaminess and a light mustard tang.
As I was choosing sides, I noticed they had smoked turkey breast. Turkey can go one of two ways — moist and delicious or dry and flavorless. Being a big fan of turkey done right, I had to try it to see how Terry Black's stood the test. With 1/4 pound of smoked turkey breast and 1/4 pound of pork ribs on my plate, and Boo Boo Bear with turkey and brisket on his plate, we were ready to dig in and chose not to bother with white bread, sliced onions or pickles.
There were three bottles of sauce on the table — a Sweet & Tangy sauce, Terry Black's original and another that lost it's label but seemed to be the original. Both sauces were great but being a barbecue joint, it's all about the meat. After drizzling a tiny amount of Terry Black's original sauce on half of the turkey, I sliced into it and took a bite. This is smoked turkey done right! Moist, delicious, flavorful and in no need of any sauce at all. Then I sliced into the pork rib, which slid of the bone and fell apart on the plate. Again, moist, delicious, no need for sauce and bursting with flavor. I don't know what woods Terry Black's uses or what their rubs are composed of, but Terry Black's is the real deal and simply some of the best barbecue I've ever had in Austin. If you're a barbecue fan (and who isn't in Texas?) do yourself a favor and visit Terry Black's Barbecue.
Excellent barbecue! Beef Ribs were outstanding! No sauce needed on anything! Staff was very friendly and great customer service, they let you try samples, make recommendations, just an all around great experience!
Brisket is delicious! Meat is tender, flavorful and juicy. We also ordered the rib, sausage, turkey, green beans and banana pudding, which were all good, but nothing worth waiting in the line for.
We ordered ahead online, our food was ready when we arrived at the establishment. The tables are first come first serve. We chose to sit at a table outside to eat or meal. Inside would've been a better choice for seating because there were quite a few flies everywhere which made the experience a little annoying.
All in all, a great experience. Staff was friendly, food was good and the crowd made it feel like the southern Texas BBQ experience that we came for.
First of all, be ready to pay, it won't be a cheap dinner but it's worth the money.
We had the giant beef rib, brisket, potato salad, beans and Mac and cheese.
Meats were amazing, but I was not crazy for the side dishes.
The parking might be a challenge, so be ready to wait.
I'm not sure if it's the best BBQ in Texas but it definitely should be up there.
Hugely popular BBQ restaurant right in the heart of Austin. Be prepared for a line, but it moves quickly and while in line you can pick up a beer or soda to tide you over until you actually get the your food. As for the food the meats and sides are excellent. The meat comes right off the bone for both the pork and beef ribs. The sides are delicious too!!! Plenty of seating both inside and out. Definitely worth trying, if you’ve got a hankering for BBQ.
We were just in town for a few hours go we placed a pickup order. Parking is a straight up nightmare. Cost us 10 to park nearby for 10 minutes. We take the short walk to get in a pretty long line but that's OK indicTes the food must be good.my boyfriend went ahead to see if there was a pickup window we were early but they got our order together real quick. The line moved fast and everyone was In a friendly mood so that was actually pleasant.
The food was of course delicious but I don't think any rib,1 Rib, is worth 54 dollars. I also didn't like the way the cobbler was packaged. The BBQ sauce was spicy and amazing, loved it! Brisket was perfect. Definitely recommend the food but it will be pricey!
Absolutely amazing BBQ. The brisket was borderline perfect, I've only had better once in my life. As for the pork ribs? They might actually BE the best I've ever had. Perfectly cooked, peppery, delicious. Turkey was also great. The potato salad was much better than I usually get at BBQ places, so that was a nice surprise. Heavily recommend the peach cobbler, as well.
The line was long but moved hilariously fast.
We came here because this is the number one Barbecue place all of Austin. I will say that the food was great, but be prepared for a long wait. Parking was also a nightmare because it’s a busy part of town. We ended up finding side street parking for free.
The line to get in took about 30 to 40 minutes. I do love their menu and as you stand in a cafeteria type line, you can pick out how much meat you want. They charge you by weight but I just asked for four or five slices of the brisket and four pork ribs. We got macaroni and cheese, potato salad, cornbread, and the sausage. Definitely a great experience but to me, it’s the one of those things you only do once or whenever you have a visitor in town. Wouldn’t make it my regular barbecue place because it’s really expensive and a bit of a hassle, but definitely a must do experience.
It’s pricy FYI: For two small sides of Mac and cheese, one small potato salad, one cornbread, 4 slices of brisket and 4 pieces of pork ribs was $97 before tip. You can see the food in my photo. That was all we ordered.
Went here for lunch and it was great. The ordering process is great given that a wave of people is expected to come every now and then. The service was awesome they all look like they are happy that they work there. The sides were straightforward and the bbq could not get any better no wonder why it's one of the best in Austin!

This is one of the best BBQ places I've ever visited. A trip from Boston is totally worth it. We had Brisket, Spare ribs, Mexican rice, Mc and cheese and peach cobbler. Everything was awesome. The brisket was perfect and had an amazing flavor. The pork ribs just melt in your mouth. The peach cobbler was in perfect balance of sweetness and flavor.
The place was full when we went for dinner. There was a moving queue. We didn't notice any empty tables. I would recommend this place to anyone who's coming down here.
The best Barbecue ever - it simply melts in your mouth. Extremely tender. I am a foodie and tried many bbq and my husband can cook very good brisket but this is far the best. The cafeteria style set up makes the line move fast It was not busy at 330 pm. But at 4 pm it became so busy. We had the brisket and pork rib. The beef rib looked good too. Go for a tour in the back and see how they cook it. The person was showing us how we cook it. It takes dedication and passion to cook the meats.
Hands down, this is the best BBQ place in Austin and even North America!
They are very popular, so depending on the tome you get there, the lineup could vary; but they’re very fast serving customers. You can choose your meat from beef brisket, pork ribs, beef ribs (be prepared, they’re huge!), turkey, sausage, pulled pork/beef and sides include mac&cheese, green beans, Mexican rice, potato salad, coleslaw, cream corn and pinto beans. They also have peach cobbler, banana pudding and pecan pie for dessert. You can choose as many as you like and pay at the checkout.
I strongly recommend the beef brisket and beef ribs. So tender, juicy and perfectly flavored.
There are tables available both inside and outside and after paying for your food, you can find a table to be seated. You can also take a tour of the smoke pit if you requested. There are plenty of bbq sauces and beers available to purchase.
