Just moved to atx and was pretty disappointed in the scarce number of sushi places here. Then I tried Maru. Search over. I've found my favorite atx sushi. The people working were SO incredibly nice! Every single one of them greeted me and separately said bye as I was leaving. They also asked me if I wanted free miso soup... Uhh, yeah! Is that a trick question? Customer service is great. And my sushi was equally great. Simple, flavorful, and fresh. I got tuna nigiri and the tiger roll. I especially liked how the spicy tuna in the tiger roll was not completely saturated in mayo, like most places prepare spicy tuna. I HATE when "spicy tuna" comes out and is a creamy orange color from all the gobs of spicy mayo rather than red, like tuna should be. Maru must've used sriracha. I will be back for sure.
The food is delicious and the service is excellent! My belly is full and very pleased right now.
J-bomb! absolutely not your regular sushi roll, unique fried jalapeño stuffed with crab salad. liked the trad salad a lot. simple alternative to Korea house, on those nights when we aren't up for the full Monty sushi night.
Very good sushi like they make in Okinawa. The decorations are spartan, but the food is good.
Lacking in ambience, but very good sushi!. It's kind of a hole in the wall as far as sushi places go (white walls with a few prints, low ceilings, boring furniture), so I wouldn't take a date there, but if you're just out to have some good sushi, this is the place. Their fish tastes fresh and flavorful, and is generously portioned. Even the forgettable rolls (spicy tuna/california) are delicious here; I never leave a single piece on my plate.
I like their sushi a lot-- I just wish they would put a little more effort into making me feel like I'm in a place where it's appropriate to drop $30 a head. (After tip, I'm spending $20 for lunch, so I'm assuming it'd be around $30 for dinner.)
Either way, if you're a sushi lover, give it a try. Definitely some of the best I've had in Austin.
Loved it! Authentic. Fresh, abundant and affordable. Long time neighborhood sushi restaurant on Burnet Road.
Charming husband and wife team holding down the fort, making the sushi, engaging with the entire clientele with an attentive waiter taking care of us throughout. Tonight was wait-free and casual.
The intimate size and generous portions combined for a truly pleasant and delicious dining experience.
The lady working when I came in absolutely made my night. Such a sweet lady. I came in just to sip on a pot of green tea because I love the tea here. I came in close to closing and she was kind enough to sit me in. Love the environment. She gave me to tea along with a cheesecake bite. I have visitors for sushi in the past and love it as well. Would definitely recommend this restaurant and kind service.
It's a small family restaurant. There are various dishes, but it's traditional and modern sushi, alone more mixed.
I ordered the Sashimi Deluxe. Fresh fish with very nice verity. It was delicious. Also had the Snow roll, which wasn't bad at all!
I will be back!
Cute, cozy sushi spot near campus. Quick service, friendly staff, good sushi. Would go back for a couple of the rolls, but they weren’t great. The free cheesecake bites were a nice touch. Really it’s a 4.5.
I hope everyone who loves sushi can try this place at least once in their lives. Incredibly delicious and although the price is high, so is the quality of the sushi, and I personally think it’s as great as you can go before you hit the extra fancy places. Owners are so sweet as well, and it makes you feel welcomed to be there.
- Beware that it can get busy, and most evenings seem to have a capacity limit, so either reserve (if you can) or come decently early to dinner!
This place is SO good. The lady who was serving us was so incredibly kind. The food was probably some of the best food I’ve had in ATX recently. I got the chicken katsu which came with rice, California roll, veggy tempura (which was SO good), miso soup, AND salad. All for a very reasonable price. At the end of our meal we got a free little cheesecake which was SO yummy. We all felt like the food tasted like it was ‘made with love’. 10/10 will be back again.
If I lived closer, this would be my regular sushi spot. I have eaten a lot of sushi and I can't recall ever having such carefully crafted rolls as these. Very high quality ingredients, excellent service, and reasonable prices! ♥
Is it shocking that a tiny neighborhood spot in the middle of Austin,TX has such incredible sushi? Maybe. But it’s also true. With so many flashy competitors in the area, Maru is a true standout. Thoughtful, fresh & family owned.
Overall, it was very good. Just a few of the nigri sushi were a little chewy (salmon). A little pricier than other Sushi places we've been recently.
This is my favorite Japanese restaurant in the U.S. so far. I lived in Japan for a while, and this cozy little restaurant is truly authentic. I love how it is a family owned with only an uncle and an aunty working; when we arrived at 9 p.m., there was no wait.
We ordered a Sushi Dinner. Everything came out just perfect - the miso soup, the tempura, and the salad were done exactly how it is done in those Kyoto restaurants. The sushi was top notch - huge pieces of fresh fish and tight small cubes of rice cooked perfectly and sticky.
We also got a Yakudon which was also phenomenon. We were so busy eating and so forgot to take decent photos of the dishes.
After the meal we were given tiny cubes of dessert which resembled cheese cake and tiramisu.
Love this family owned restaurant!
Lovely wife always is welcoming and husband is busy behind the counter making wonderful sushi, etc.
My favorite Japanese restaurant in Austin & I’ve tried many.
I visited Japan years ago & this restaurant is the most authentic and customer-friendly that I have found in Austin.
Highly recommend Maru!
Maru is the best sushi in Austin hands down! The nigiri are two-bites, such a good bang for your buck. The husband and wife that owns this restaurant are so nice and friendly. The only downside is that you will never find sushi that taste as good for the portion size that you get. I recommend the unagi and the fatty tuna.
Wow this place is a hidden gem! Owned by husband and wife, they were very nice.
Ordered Geisha roll for a quick late lunch and it was surprisingly delicious! All the fish on top were fresh and they cut thick. So you can enjoy and taste fish much more than the other restaurant. And they have variety of sake&wine selections which is great!
I'm blown away by this place every time I come for sushi. The pieces of fish you get on the sashimi are out of this world in flavor and size. You'll probably have to wait a while to get your food if it's busy considering it's just the two of them running the show. I promise it's worth the wait though!
Best sushi, gyoza, and chicken katsu I’ve ever had. We got the American and moon walker roll, the katy’s chicken, lucky buddha beer, and gyoza (not pictured). Everything was super fresh and the service was amazing.
