Listen!! To say it was my first time coming here. I was in love!!!! The smokehouse philly. To die for! If you haven't been. You need to. SOON!
Folks this is a spot you should visit! The Philly cheese steak sandwiches are absolutely delectable. I ordered mines with grilled onion/mushrooms and cheese whiz. The bread was moist and chewy without ever getting soggy! The steak is the star!! Not too pricey and worth every penny. Outstanding Grub!
OMG!! This place is so good! Love the shrimp poboy but the wings are to die for! I love that try play Klove radio, good family friendly environment and the owner is very nice!!!
Finally stop by South of Philiy and I couldn't be any happier with this place. The food is great and the service is reminiscent of the past. The workers want to talk to you and know how your day is going. They are more than really to help you decide and let you try things. If you like cheese steaks or burgers, this place is a must!!
Love the cheesesteak and the cheese whiz you can get for your fries. The bread is perfectly toasted. Service is their strong point, which pleasantly surprises me. I hadn't been in since they updated it and it looks very nice inside. The parking situation is very bad. Overall, love it.
First visit today since we are from Minneapolis and all 6 of us loved the food. A couple of us had the cheese steaks and a couple had burgers. Staff was extremely helpful and friendly. Will try to get back there before we leave!
Was better than expected. Read the reviews here. Thought we would give it a try. Girl behind the counter was very nice. I got roast beef poboy. Wife got shrimp poboy with mozzarella sticks. We shared fries. Wife was not impressed with the shrimp. My roast beef was the bomb. Wow it was great. Fries were thin cut and fresh. Was a nice meal. We will be back.
Love this place. I eat here 3-5 times a week. The philly steaks are large and flavorful. The fries are are fresh cut. Very extensive menu.
Met the owner on my first vist, he is from the Philly area, so you know that the taste is authentic.
If you been in the past and didn't like it, I challenge you to give them another shot. This current owner/management knows what he's doing.
The fries are AWESOME! I pretty much always get the surf and turf. Its just so good i cant seem to break away and try tbe rest of the menu. I hear the tiger steak is great too!
I worked there about three years ago and the food was awesome... Wasn't very good the last few times I went but today it was once again awesome! The few times I went and it wasn't good was simply because the meat was overcooked but today the guy on grill did an amazing job! Thanks south of Philly for doing it right today!
Lguild. Have been here several times. Please check your order if you are ordering out, twice the bacon was left off of my bacon cheese burger, but that is my only complaint. I consider myself a cheeseburger expert (since I am addicted) and South of Philly has one of the best in B.R., very juicy and oh so tasty. The fries are fresh cut and delicious. My husband also loves the vegie cheesesteak sandwich, but I just can't get past the burger.
My guiltiest of pleasures! Peppersteak with onions, american cheese, AND cheese wiz. You can thank me once you awaken from your cheese coma.
Taste is good but very greasy. Also, the restaurant floor is slick so be careful not to fall.
We lived in Philly a few years ago, and this palce makes me miss it. Love the Cheese Whiz option, just needs to be served under the meat, as when you wrap up the sandwich, you lose the cheese.
Gino's and Pat's has MUCH better quality meats so I do miss that. I feel like this whole town orders the cheapest meats they can find and try to pass it off like it's good quality.
We northerners always know the difference. Can't fool me. You could however fool me on seafood... all tases the same to me!!
Will go back for sure!
Awesome cheesesteak, but the fries are the best in Baton Rouge. Love to treat myself to this place. Lots of food for the $.
Possibly my favorite place in Baton Rouge. Even if you are in doubt. Try the philly's with the whiz at least one time in your life. For me it sounded gross at first but man am I glad I tried it.
I can't explain how much I love the philly's here. And the fries are my favorite in the city. Thin cut and not stingy on the portions.
I read other reviewers saying how it doesnt compare to real philly's from Philadelphia and if that's the case I need to make a trip because I find it hard to imagine too many sandwiches better than this place.
Best Philly I've ever had. My wife and I got this on a whim on the way back from a shopping expedition to the outlet mall. We both got Philly's (mine with mushrooms) and they were AMAZING!! We got a large order of shoestring fries (they come in a paperbag, which helps absorb some of the grease), but we should have gotten a small since the large was enough for about 6 people. If you like a good sandwich, this place is top-notch!!
Great cheesesteaks. OK, I don't have much for comparison, but I love these sandwiches, and the fries are really good, too. It would be nice if they cut the salt back on the sandwiches so I say no added salt now. The tables are set up awkward but hopefully they can move to a better locale soon? Please...
South of Philly. I really enjoyed the Philly Cheesesteak here. The bread is delicious (Amoroso). I think that the prices on on par with the quality and quantity you receive. I would recommend.
Good food. It took me six months before I finally went in and tried this place. The building is not much to look at, but it was well worth going inside. I had a Philly cheese steak with onions and onion rings. Both items were very good. I have been back three times and I was satisfied each time.
Really authentic! Having tried Ginos & Pats South of Philly is right up there, coming from a jersey boy that's pretty good... Top 5 favorite in BR.
Love the cheese steak & fries. A friend from stubenville ohio told me this place has the best philly cheese steak in B. R. he's had them in philly. so wife and i try them last friday night. AWESOME absolutely fantastic experience. never had before but this will not be my last. we split a bag of fries and with a 7 inch cheese steak wit onions and cheese whiz i had a near religous experience. can't wait to do it again
Very Good. Have tried South of Philly several times and have loved it every time. Cheese steak and fries were very good. Would recommend it to anyone.
Fabulous Philly!. This was our first visit and I will say this place has the best Philly in Baton Rouge. The prices are very reasonable. It does not look like much from the outside. The inside is also no thrills and that is ok by me because it is a locally owned neighborhood joint, not some corporate run of the mill junk. Great place to kick back and have a great sandwich and a cold beer / soda.
BEST CHEESESTEAKS!. South of Philly is the best place to get a cheesesteak in Baton Rouge, period. When it first opened, we were going every single weekend because we could not get enough of it; it is that good! If you order a combo, they give you a ton of fries. Order the Tiger Steak if you like it spicy! :)
There's Pats, Gino's and now South of Philly!. Being that Philly is one of my favorite food cities I must say it takes a lot to impress me where cheese steaks are concerned but wow! these are good cheese steaks. I had mine with of course onions and cheez whiz what else there and it super good, hot and well seasoned and the bread, the bread is awesome. The meat was tender and super thin cut with enough seasoning to not to need the accouterments but hey did I mention they have cheez whiz! The fries were really good too, hand cut with just the right amount salt and nice and crispy. If you can't get to Philly, South of Philly is a good back up plan.
Oh geez this rocks!. I have always taking an intrest into this little place. Passing by it, the place doesnt seem like much, but by reading the name of the joint, you already know what they sell. Upon the first time there, I get a 12" Cheese Steak and my wife and son share a 12" Smokehouse Philly (we reached about $20 for the both of us). The Sandwhiches are dripping with juicy delight as we open them at home, (we went thru drive-thru) and the first bite spelled b-l-i-s-s. I have never has a cheese steak better than this and the smokehouse was a great flavor to behold on its own. I highly recommend this tiny joint for anybody and everybody. I will be visiting once again and look forward to further sandwhich wonderness!
GREAT FOOD!! Just ate their and was seriously impressed! I had the mushroom steak without onions. Had mozzarella cheese. Yum! Mushrroms cooked perfectly, beef was chopped, well seasoned and served hot. Hubby had the cheesesteak with onions and cheez whiz. He said it was great! Bread is soft and great with the meat. The fries were served hot with just enough salt we didn't need ketchup. Huge servings of fries. The Tastycake was a great finish to a wonderful meal. Will absolutely go back!!
Great Steak!. I read an article about this place in 225 Mag. I am glad I did. Everytime I passed this place, I wondered why it had not closed. I never noticed many people there. But I soon found out that they have a huge call in business. They even offer delivery in the Sherwood/Coursey area! That is rare. Got the steak wit onions wit Whiz (just like they do in Philly). It was worth the money. Make sure you order a regular size fry! The large is enough to feed 5 people! Would def. recommend!

Went there today. Absolutely incredible. I recommend the surf & turf wit provelone wit onions and an andygator to wash it down.
Awesome. Get your @$$ over to South of Philly because it will rock your face off. If this place closes down because you fail to visit, I'll be highly frustrated. Favorite place for lunch.....
Unspeakably good!!! Best you'll have outside of Philly. Eat here.
The best!!!!. Hello South of Philly,
I just got a philly steak this afternoon. It is the best I have ever had. Your staff was so helpful and kind. I got the 7" sandwich and wish I had gotten the 12". I will be back often and soon.
South of Philly. I Heart the Philly Cheez Steak...and the price. PENNIES!
and they DELIVER!!
...overall: A+

Loved it! Food was great, large portions, good price and very friendly staff. Plus they were kid friendly and didn't mind my 2 year old making his usual mess. We will be back !
Great. I have eaten there two times. I think the food is great, I did not eat in but got mine in the drive-thru. Food was hot and fresh. Delicious fresh fries and the Cheesesteak tastes like what I want a cheesesteak to taste like.
EatRouge.com Review: South of Philly. It doesn't really happen that often, but today I was in the mood for a big ole greasy cheese steak. I had been hearing about this new place on Sherwood called South of Philly and since I was in the area, I decided to give it a try.
After talking to the girl behind the counter, I decided to go with their most popular cheesesteak: The 7" Philly with Cheese Whiz and a side of fries. Now I'm not going to sit here and call myself a cheese steak connoisseur, but the cheese steak was awesome. It was served on thin bread opened up hot dog style, loaded with cheese steak, and topped off with Cheese Whiz. It was so juicy and greasy! Im sure I'll probably regret it later, but for now I'm going to sit here and enjoy this full belly.

Atmosphere (Update)
The atmosphere and decor are the only problems with this place. When you step into the restaurant, it looks like a cheese steak joint. There is an open kitchen, big menu signs, order up tickets in the window, etc. But all that changes when you take a seat in the dining area. The decor and colors still match the seafood restaurant that was formerly here. It's time to do some decorating guys!
Updated Visit: I know I talked a little smack about the atmosphere after my first visit. Today I took my family out to dinner and the atmosphere has gotten better. The "Under the Sea" theme is now gone and the restaurant is starting to seem to find its own persona. Lets go ahead and raise that atmosphere rating a bit!

Great sandwich!. I really love this place. I get the Garden which comes with steak, banana peppers, bell peppers, mushrooms, and onions (though I skip out on the onions) with whiz. The sandwich is well seasoned and the fries are yummy - thin and crispy. The service is always fast and friendly, but the restaurant is usually empty when I'm there. This makes me sad because it's so good and I want it to succeed!
Can't get it out of my head.... My dad (who is from NJ) brought me here last weekend, and I can't stop thinking about it. It was DELICIOUS! This was my first time eating a Philly (I got the Philly with Provolone and Mushrooms) and I LOVED it. I am not a big meat eater, but this was so good. The meat was high quality with no big lumps of fat or gristle. My dad and I also really enjoyed the fries and the staff members were so friendsly. My dad said this place reminds him of home. All I know is I can't wait to go back!
Excellent, had the cheesesteak with onions and wizz it was great but the fries were even better
Not sure what other reviewer was talking about as far as bad service goes. Everytime I've been the staff has been friendly and helpful. Food is fast and fresh. My husband and I will split an order of fries and I can't imagine finishing a 12 inch philly.
I went recently and ordered a regular philly with wiz and onions. The steak is chopped fine and well seasoned. My only complaint would be about the value. While a 12 inch was enough to fill me up, it was around 11 dollars. I will be going again the next time I feel like a cheesesteak as it is the most authentic in baton rouge.
A Taste Of Brotherly Love. I used to live up north and let me tell you this is the closest to real Philly as you can come in cajun country. The menu is great very nice selection and the portions are large. I am a big eater and I was tamed by their 12" cheesesteak. Their fries are heavenly and onion rings some of the best. I found the staff to be friendly and courteous and the restaurant had a pleasing ambiance. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a taste of Philly.
Tiger Steak. This is my second time to eat at South of Philly. The first time i had the regular philly steak sandwich and it was good. The Second time, i was advised to try the Tiger steak and it was incredible. The fries are hand cut and were really good too. The staff was all friendly and I will be back very soon. Baton Rouge really need a place with a great philly steak sandwich and I found it.

Cheese Steaks are the culinary icon of Philadelphia. The sandwich represents to them what the poboy means to New Orleans. There is culture, creativity, passion, and pizazz all sandwiched between a roll of bread. And like the poboy, there are many differen
