Clean, delicious and authentic and well price.
WOW. I usually end my reviews by saying if I'd go back to the restaurant or not. I'm going to start this by saying I decided half way through dinner that I would indeed be back...and often. I actually looked at my friend and said, I want to come back here a lot.
I was looking for a Tex-Mex restaurant we hadn't visited yet for dinner tonight when I came across this one. I will say the emphasis is on the Mex. Not sure if it could be considered Tex-Mex but more legit Mexican food.
I was intrigued by their signature dish, the Birria. It is a Mexican dish from the Jalisco area of Mexico. I had never had it before and knew I needed to try it.
The smaller restaurant was clean and the wait staff friendly and attentive.
I, of course, ordered the lamb Birria. I can't say how much I loved it. It was fantastic. So flavorful. The sides that went with it, the tortillas, all of it was spectacular. I ordered the small and still have enough for lunch tomorrow.
My friend got the supreme enchiladas. I was too smitten with my Birria to try the enchiladas but he said they were good and since enchiladas are his go to meal I trust his answer. The rice looked authentic too.
I am just so excited to have found this restaurant and will definitely be telling all my friends and family about it. If you want a culinary adventure to Mexico without leaving Oklahoma I highly suggest this restaurant.
After reading an article published in the "Edible OKC" magazine, our office decided to try this place for lunch. This place was excellent! The food is authentic mexican, which is a nice change from tex mex. We all had different entrees, and everyone said their meal was delicious! There was not one complaint about anything we ate. We will definitely be back! So glad we found this place!
I'll admit this is not for everyone. This definitely is not TEX-MEX. If you like ground beef in your tacos and enchiladas, don't stop here. This is home cooking MEXICO style. I eat here once a week. I love the service and the menu. Explore the menu! Everything is good.
The poor ratings have to be from those who think EL CHICO is Mexican food. Shame on you!
The price is right!
Hands down our favorite for Mexican. Our favorite dishes include: tacos rancherosand enchiladas (red, with potatoes!). Everything we've ordered has been delicious!
My first visit was an interesting mix. Some of the tables weren't clean (the place was almost empty) but were promptly attended when we came in. The chips and dips were disappointing. The cheese dip was watery and the "salsa" was ok. I ordered the tacos (the menu pictured is not the menu in July 2015) made with beef and onions (held the bell peppers). I nearly ate myself sick because I couldn't stop. They were WONDERFUL! My daughter had the cheese tamales and was thrilled that they were almost as good as the ones she had in Mexico. She said her rice and beans were very good.
So, first, second, and third immediate impressions weren't great but, oh my! The Entrees!!
We will be back.
OKLAHOMA CITY – One of the hardest to find Mexican specialties in this town has got to be birria. A spicy stew made of goat or lamb and originating in Jalisco, this sinus-clearing dish is so good that, if you’re anything like me, you’ll never be able to go back to those boring old lame American stews you’re probably used to.
Great surprise. Made my first visit today, somewhat by accident (I was looking for the fudge shop around the corner!). During my 1st year in OKC I have tried a lot of Mexican restaurants but this one quickly became one of my favorites. I had the sopes, which had a thick, chewy corn crust and delicious toppings. Also had a taco, which was pretty good but became spectactular with the addition of grilled peppers & onions, which I did not expect. Salsas were good, but the other surprises were the dish of dried hot peppers and thick, deep red "spicy sauce" that looked to be made of red peppers as well. I didn't have tamales but noticed they offered more than just pork, which puts them in a small minority. Although it's out of the way, I look forward to going back with my wife as the flavors remind me of our favorite authentic family-run place back home that serves a lot of Mexico City styles.
Great Mexican food. I have a general rule that if I see a restaurant with a full parking lot I tend to keep driving. Those places are usually very overrated. Give me a small, quiet family run place any time. Birrieria Diaz is one of those places.
Typically I will order the Enchiladas Mexicanas. They are not the Tex Mex style that is so common here. They are authentic cuisine from the interior of Mexico--not smothered in cheese sauce or chili. Some places use huge servings to cover up a lack of taste. Birrieria instead serves reasonable portions that really taste great. Also, the salsa is the best I have found in OKC.
Also, the employees are friendly and helpful. This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in the city.
Great Mexican Food Served Here!!!!. Me and my wife love this place. We come here frequently and enjoy the food. My wife loves the Tortas de Juevo, I love everything else. We have tried everything on the menu. This is authentic Mexican food, not tex-mex. You won't find fajitas or chimichanga's here. Well at least, I didn't.
Tasty!. Had the Tacos Rancheros and guacamole. Both excellent!
Will try again.
This place is doing it right, there tortas are amazing, and the al pastor is spot on. Guacamole is so fresh, and delicious. They also have a friendly staff!
¡Qué rico!. I was raised on authentic mexican food and this place is legit. I ordered the Posole Verde. It was just as good as my aunt's posole who lives in Mexico City. I did add some lime to my posole. I love lime on most of my mexican food. I also had a ceviche tostada. ¡Delicioso! I will go again.

Excellent food. Everything full of rich flavors. Their queso and guacamole are absolutely amazing. Everyone should try this place!
This place is pretty good, 3 stars, average. For the price, you get a good amount of food and while it's not like a meal from a bigger restaurant, it still tastes good. Pros: friendly staff, prices, average food. Cons: no sides (yep, no rice and beans here!), no more tortillas (apparently they stopped making them), average food. While I wouldn't tell anyone to rush over to this place, if youre in the area and need something to eat, it's a fine place to stop in.
Wonderful food, service and prices!. We ate there Sept. 15, 2012. We had the Tacos Diaz and the Gringas. Both were very good. We got TOO MUCH SALSA! Please don't waste that good salsa. I think I'll take a tupper ware containers next time to take all the leftover homemade salsa back home lol. Plenty of queso as well as some radish and limes. The service was fast and friendly and the prices were very low. The insides were very modest and reminded me of a cafe in Mexico. We look forward to going back again and again. I'll be sure to tell all my friends about the good food, service and prices.
Really great little place.. I actually went to this place based on reviews from urbanspoon, and I was not at all disappointed. It's a simple little restaurant located practically in walking distance from my old highschool. I wish it had been around a decade ago. i would have had a great little place to add to my regular lunch list.
To get right down to business, I wanted to get a taste of a few things they had to offer. So I ordered a couple tacos, sopes, and tamales. This comes with chips and queso (add a little salt), great salsa, along with cups of lime, radishes, green and red chile sauce. I went on a Saturday evening and it was about half full, the food arrived quickly, and everything was well cooked and extremely tasty. The amount of sides you're given really lets you experiment with flavors, and it's MUCH more authentic than any tex-mex place you're going to come across. For example, the tacos are small-ish soft corn tortillas with chopped beef, lettuce, onion, cilantro.. and I added a healthy squeeze of lime with chile sauce, and it was delicious. The sopes had beef-head (Also delicious, though there are multiple meat choices if you can't handle the idea of that. Chicken, etc.) and the tamales, pork with red sauce.
Beyond the good food, I have to mention 2 things. Firstly, the price is very reasonable. The tacos run I think 1.60 a piece, and 3-4 of them could EASILY make a large meal, especially considering the chips. Even still my grand total came to 18 dollars, and I felt the 5 dollar tip was deserved, especially considering my second point.
The service in this place is really just amazing, as others have mentioned, this is a family owned business that is friendly and eager to help out. My server reassured my mother all spicy things came on the side, and helped to explain anything she didn't know, or help pronounce anything we hadn't heard of. Beyond that, he suggested ways to mix the ingredients, and he was very correct. Attentive, friendly, and non intrusive. The kind of service you can only get from a person who actually cares, and that means a lot.
I felt like I really cheated on my diet, but that is beside the point. Here in OKC there are only so many options for good mexican food, and most are either overpriced or inauthentic. This is in my opinion a small and humble place.. but it is honest, reasonable, friendly, and will not disappoint.
Pretty authentic and tasty. The Birria is quite good and a lot of meat for the price. They give a nice variety of garnishes with the meal, at least 6 ramekins of stuff like onions, cilantro, chiles, radishes, salsa, onions and habanero.
Fried Potato Tacos YUM!. Family owned who are from my home state of California. This is not Tex/Mex but they will service queso. The warn chips and great salsa. I loved the fried potato tacos and excellent homemade Tamales. Excellent Birria which is a spicy Mexican meat stew , I love eating with hot flour tortillas. I so happy the open all week Mon – Fri 9am to 10pm and Sat & Sun 8am to 10pm.
We have a taste of California in Bethany, OK.
Delicious!!!. This little place is a hidden gem! On our second visit, I ordered the soup- Posole Verde. It was outstanding! My husband ordered tacos and devoured them. I love the six+ sides of various salsas, vegetables and limes which accompany the orders. To drink, try the Horchata, a deliciously sweet and refreshing rice milk, flavored with vanilla and cinnamon. You will not be disappointed by this place. Great prices, as well!
My fiancé and I went in on Saturday for the first time. I got the small beef birria. The beef was super tender! I got to create my own tacos. Delicious. My fiancé liked his 4 beef tacos which made him full! We had an order of chicken tamales since they were out of beef. The outside was soft and yummy but the chicken was a bit dry. It was still good. All this for $18. I'm sure we will be back!
Latin American. I had lunch here today, very tasty ! everything came to the table hot and the sides were very good, I'll be back, it's a bargain, and very good !
Our new favorite mexican restaurant!. All I can say is, WOW. This place has the best homestyle Mexican food in OKC, hands down. The beef they use in the tacos is tender, juicy, and amazingly lean. No grease or fatty juices. I had the enchiladas and was blown away; they were so incredibly fresh and delicious. They also served these crazy good reddish-seared potatoes. I have no idea what spices they used but it was super yummy!
The service is excellent and the waitstaff is very nice. There is plenty of parking behind the restaurant which is awesome.
We've never been to such an authentic, family-run Mexican place...we will be going back again and again!
I enjoyed the place. Great service, good food. Their menu is small but they have some unique things I haven't seen in the metro. I really enjoyed the sheep stew. Will definitely be back.
Great meal. This place is legit! Me & 3 friends ate here a couple weeks ago. Everything the 3 of us had was delicious. Unique menu! Very authentic and delicious.
Excellent!. I've been there twice (both in the last week), and it's really good. The staff and service are excellent and the prices are very reasonable. Love the salsa and condiments, the cheese sauce is a bit bland but salt takes care of that. Like many, I tried the sheep stew stuff and loved it, also have had the tamales and tacos and it's all good.
Hi guys this is Juan Jr proud owner.of Birrieria Diaz I wanna to thank all of u for the good comments and help to getting to know our restaurant
Got Sheep?. The sheep birrieria was fantastic. Got the medium for $7 and took a to-go box home. It is stewed sheep meat in a sauce that comes with roasted/salted peppers, onions, cilantro, radishes, and limes. My wife got the pasole verde which is a hominy and pork stew. Very generous portion for $7 and we ended up sharing it. The horchata was very good, not too sweet, right amount of cinnamon. A sopapila comes with each order. service is outstanding. Very friendly, very clean establishment. PLENTY of parking in the back. Walking Bethany's downtown is a nice stroll.
Nice staff, decent food.. We really wanted to love this place, as the menu looked great with a lot of authetic Mexican choices. The food however, was just decent
I had the sheep birria, and my children each had tacos, 2 tacos de lengua and 2 asada tacos. The birria was good, if not just a little bland. Just needed some salt. The condiments that are provided for the birria are great except the red onion and habanero mix that I got looked a bit old. I've worked in the food biz and I could recognize these were old onions. I love hot food, but I passed on those.
The tacos de lengua were good, as were the asada tacos.
I got 6 tamales to go and they were very big and pretty darn good.
Salsa was okay. Service spectacular. Clean restaurant.
Different in a great way! Lovely service and delicious food.
AWESOME !!!!!. My husband and I are always looking for new restaurant's to try. I came accross the Birrieria Diaz while searching online. I really take other peoples reviews to heart. And the reviews that I read made the place sound amazing. Well the reviews were corrrect. The food was amazing. My husband tells me whenever we try a new mexican or Tex-mex restaurant that you can always tell how good the food is by their Tamales.
My husband had the Beef Birria and a Tamale and he said it was so good , I had the Huaraches and it was very good. We had other family with us and they said the Quesadillas were also very good. The salsa and cheese was great. You get more then enough food and the extra's that come with your order. The staff were very polite and helpful. We had 5 Adult's and 1 child in our party and our bill was like $ 29.00.
We found parking very easily in the back of the building. Is kind of a small place so you may have to wait a little bit , but the staff is more then helpful at cleaning the tables and helping you get seated quickly. We will be making this a regular on our list of restaurant's to visit.
GREAT FOOD & GREAT PEOPLE. Tonight was my first visit & wish I'd eaten here sooner. I had the large sheep birria for $10 (served with both soft & fried tortillas) & had enough left for lunch tomorrow. They bring you a large assortment of condiments (radishes, limes, cilantro, dried chilis, mild & spicy chopped onions). They bring fresh chips, with perfect salsa and queso upon your arrival. It is owned & staffed by the same family; they make you feel very welcome & I'll be returning soon. They have soft tacos for $1.60 each and four make a very generous meal.
I've been 3 times and everything I've tried has been great. Give it a try!
Fantastic!!!. I was lucky to fall into Birrieria Diaz's spell this summer. Between my husband and I we have had everything on the menu, and nothing has disappointed. My favorites are the lengua sopes and the sheep Birria. Most of all the family that runs the restaurant are incredible. If you want authentic Mexican food this is your place. Stop in and be amazed!
Good Mexican food, good prices. For my first meal here, I tried the birria. It is a simple dish of slow cooked, tender beef or sheep in a spicy broth. It is accompanied by a basket of soft and crispy corn tortillas and small bowls of condiments, e.g. radishes, salsas, cilantro, and chopped onions. I liked it because I could make three different taco-type sandwiches using different sets of condiments in order to experiment with different mixtures of flavors.
I ordered the small size, which cost $5.00. It was a good size for lunch. If you have a larger appetite, you might try the medium size. I think the large size is meant for sharing between at least two people.
Although most of the tables were filled when I came in, my companion and I waited less than ten minutes for our food to arrive. I am definitely coming back to this place.
Posole Verde. Delish. Roasted pork in a seasoned broth soup/stew with hominy & lettuce & avocado -- topped with radish & lime or choose from 6 bowls of condiments that come with most meals. I can't wait to return to try everything on the menu!
Family owned, very attentive & friendly service.
Wonderfully authentic. I've tried several of the taco places and authentic Mexican food places that pop up in OKC owned by hispanic families.
That being said, I find this new restaurant really good in comparison. They bring you avocado slices with your meal, several different salsas -- and all are GREAT!
The wait staff is friendly and this is a nice family atmosphere to dine.
My only criticism is that their location doesn't lend itself well to parking during the lunch hour, but it's worth the walk from the parking spaces behind the restaurant.
I'd recommend you try this. It's not Tex-Mex, it's real Mexican food, but it's highly flavored.
They have handmade corn tortillas.
Not crazy about the thicker chips, but I think that's part of the authenticity.
Hey all, Oklahoma City has a Birrieria! A what, you ask? A Birrieria! Probably the reason for you having no idea what I'm talking about is the fact that these are usually native to other parts of the world, most notably, Guadalajara in the Mexican state of Jalisco.
I have heard so many good things about Birrieria Diaz so we finally decided to stop in for an early lunch. We started off with the queso dip which was fantastic! For entrees we had the lunch fajitas. Overall it was a great experience and I would highly recommend them. The service was great and our food was on the table within 10 minutes. Definitely give this place a try!
Came here on a whim (kind of, it was Cinco de Mayo but we really were just craving Mexican food!), and wanted to try somewhere new, and not your basic Ted’s/tex mex/chain. The reviews were great, and we were not disappointed! It was quite a long wait since it was so packed, but that was fine. The salsa tasted homemade, and had just a little kick. We ordered beef fajitas and the Parrillada. It was wonderful! More than enough food for the both of us, and I love that there was a variety of peppers, cactus, etc. The beans were absolutely delicious. The rice was good too, and I’m usually not a fan of Mexican rice. Overall, we would definitely come back and try something different!
This place had a delicious quesadilla! The sauces it came with were amazing too although I wish there were spicier options. I also got my food within minutes of ordering and they brought it to my car. Very quick and excellent place to eat!
Wowzers!! This is some awesome authentic mexican food! Super tasty!
Fast and friendly staff all around!
Order the quesabirra tacos, they are found in the drink menu. Should be 10 bucks for 3 tasty tacos!!
This place is great! Chips, salsa, and queso are yummy. I got the lunch ranchero tacos and my SO got lunch fajitas. They were both delicious! They also have amazing tortillas. Yum Yum!!!
This is one of my favorite Mexican restaraunts in the area. The food is always very fresh, delicious, and authentic. They also have just about any authentic Mexican drink you could ever want. The first time I came here, a few years ago, it was the only spot in Bethany allowed to serve alcohol. Not sure if that's still the case, but good info to know if it is. This is also walking distance from many of the Bethany car shows.
I ordered their special queso. It is absolutely delicious. I also had their street tacos and they are amazing! I loved everything I tried at Birriera Diaz. This is definitely a top Mexican restaurant in the Oklahoma City area.
