Loaded up on chips salsa and the number 3 enchiladas....huge servings friendly attentive staff ...great stop after a ball game at Shiloh field
I have lived in Brandon 22 years. Hands down best Mexican food in Jackson area--best chips, best tamales, best rice. Sure, it's a dive, but many dives have the best food.
An Elevated throwback.. DECOR: OK, its a dump and not for the faint at heart, but to me that goes with third world food. Interesting aspects: When is the last time you saw sombreros on the wall of a mex joint? And somebody bought some inexpensive sheets of mosaic tile, pulled the tiles off the mesh, and made crude mexican themed mosaics on the tables (with cacti, somberos, etc ...), and the sealed them with acrylic or something. This alone is worth the trip.
FOOD: Since Katrina brought a critical mass of Mexicans to the Gulf South, we have been blessed with a wave of authentic food, most places serving about six or seven meat choices in a variety of forms (tacos, hurrachees, etc...). This is NOT such a place -- the food reminds me of old school Americanized Mexican food you might find in a mall thirty years ago (e.g.El Chico), serving "Mama's recipes", which were anything but.
BUT it is an elevated form of that style of food and quite tasty. The chips were rustic yet lite and warm -- way about average. The red table salsa was really hot (hotter than most salsa verde -- the green which is usually the hotter). The yellow rice was spiced well and had flavor -- i caught a hint of cumino in there, and the beans were flavorful as well. I had a few things with the shredded beef and they were quite good.
Three or four Mexican beers including Corona. I had XX amber.
Priced more than fair.
I might go back.
Go for the food. You definitely do not go here for the atmosphere...and you may be tempted to look in the kitchen as you walk in the front door. Just go in, eat, and enjoy. Pitoritto is my favorite. TRY to eat the whole thing after a basket of chips....
Cafe Azteca. I absolutely love the food here. I've been driving from Mendenhall, MS, which a good distance, just to eat there for about 16 years and the food is alway fabulous. I have introduced this restaurant to all of my friends and family and they are all regular customers, also. My favorite dish is the Pitorito, but everything I have tried is exceptionally good. The chips and salsa is one of a kind that I haven't found anywhere else and is complimentary. They are seasoned perfectly. The cost of the food is cheap, especially the lunch specials, and you get alot of food for your money. I have to admit, the restaurant itself is not impressive or fancy, but the fabulous food makes up for it!
Mr.. I live in Summit, MS, and have been known to drive all the way up to Cafe Azteca just to eat, then turn around and drive home. The atmosphere is not much, but the food is great, and the salsa is the best I have had. You get alot of food for the money, and it always taste great. The Pitorito covers a huge plate. I recommend it.
Hole in the wall...literally. If you haven't lived in Brandon for 10 years I guarantee you haven't seen Azteca. A very hole in the wall "sketch" looking restaurant. The outside is dimly lit and almost impossivle to see from the road. But that being said, the food is amazing. Big portions, great flavors, and I love the way they season their chips! Their salsa is one of a a kind. Not a very good atmosphere but we order take out from here at least once a month. Beware they are very stingy of their chips on take out orders.
Hole in the Wall Mexican. We have been eatting here for 15 years. They have THE BEST TAMALES in Jackson. You don't go for fancy here. It's a basic place to eat really good Mexican food. Very inexpensive and very filling.
This place is more of a dive than a restaurant I would say. It's family owned from my understanding and has been here for many years. Our food was hot and fresh and the rice actually had flavor. I note that because at most Mexican restaurants the rice is very bland. I had the four tamale plate and my wife had the three tacos plate. Both came with rice and refried beans. If you're in the area and looking for a big meal in a small down home place then this is the place to go.
Best chips and salsa of any Mexican Restaurant. My wife and I have been going here for years. Our only complaint is we live to far away to have it weekly.
Been going since 93. Best authentic Mexican restaurant/ food around. Its a dive, but if you want good food and service at a good price. This is the place. You won't leave hungry. That is for sure.
Went here for my last day of work it was top notch good luck eating all your food the servings are massive but amazing
When you go to Azteca, you go for the really good food. The atmosphere has been the same for decades, but don’t be put off. Seat your self then enjoy tortilla chips served warm tossed with yummy chili-salt seasoning and large portions of fresh salsa. Their chicken enchiladas, my favorite dish, are made with a sour cream sauce and loads of Monterey Jack cheese. The beans and rice are the best in town!
Always consistent. Been visiting for years.
Food is still good, portions are appropriate.
It was probably the best Mexican food that I have had in a long time... I recommend that you go down there for lunch and Be Nice.. Just remember to TIP the waitress...
SERIOUSLY!!
