I haven't had such delicious stuffed cabbage since my grandmother was alive.
Two of the items I requested were missing from my order and that was disappointing.
I recommend you check your bag before you leave.
Pastrami is very good and egg salad
sandwich itself is little less thicker than Katz deli
price is almost the same as Katz in nyc thus the 4 star
Today, April 22, 2023, I took a three hour schlep from South Brooklyn to Riverdale up in da Bronx to Liebman's Kosher Delicatessen & Restaurant at 552 W 235th St, Bronx, NY 10463. Now I have a soft spot for this place, because my aunt Joan and Uncle Bill z"l lived a couple of blocks away and had Liebman's cater all their simchas. Sadly, they've been gone for over 15 years, so it's been a while.
I arrived at Liebman's around noon, having left home around 9am and I was hungry. The first thing I noticed is that the place had had a facelift and that it was a lot brighter and cheerful than it had been in the past. Being the last day for the Riverdale Restaurant Week Special, I went for it, ordering a Pastrami on rye, full sour pickles, a square knish and a Dr. Brown's Cel-Ray from my friendly and attentive waiter for the unbelievable price of only $20. By the time I got back from the sparkling clean rest room, everything was laid out at my table and I was ready to feast!
The generous standard (as opposed to the overstuffed which would have been $5 extra and worth every penny) 12 oz. of pastrami was machine sliced, but thicker than Sarge's and Pastrami Queen. It was glistening with fat, had a nice crust of spices and a noticeable smoke ring. It was beautifully tender and juicy, nicely smoky and had just the perfect amount of salt. It was the best Kosher pastrami I've had in NYC, and I'd rank it just under Katz's pastrami for flavor and tenderness; definitely worth the trip.
The Cole slaw was shaved thin, but retained it's crispiness. It was some of the freshest and tastiest I've had in a while. The pickles, while being juicy and garlicky, were nice and crispy, not mushy like pickles in a lot of places. They made a wonderful palate cleanser in-between bites of sandwich and sips of Cel-Ray.
When, not if, I return, I'm going to try the overstuffed version, which at $26.99 is still a bargain for an overstuffed Kosher pastrami sandwich.
In my humble opinion, Liebman's Kosher Delicatessen & Restaurant is worth the trip!
Old school kosher deli, the last survivor in the Bronx, I believe. Clean and up to date. Good service. Possibly the best pastrami I've ever eaten. Fried potatoes are perfection.
One of the lasts of a dying breed. I truly believe Liebmans pastrami is the best of the Jewish delis in NYC. Thin sliced, juicy, and fatty. So delicious. Amazing pickles and cole slaw. Really enjoyed the square knish also. The mustard is a real nice addition. Of course, have to wash it down with Dr. browns root beer!
One of the few jewish delis left! Love the fact you can pop in and get the hot dog in NYC (IMO) in under 2-3 minutes. Decor is about as authentic as it gets. 1940's-50's NYC. And in mint condition. BTW they use Hebrew National hot dogs
I time traveled back to my childhood. Cozy and delicious. Highly recommended.
Jewish deli. Similar to the one my mom used to take us to as kids on 231st off broadway. Had my standard order. Chicken noodle soup, hotdog, Pastrami on Rye, and a Black Cherry Dr Brown's soda. It's a bit pricey but I'm ok with that when everything tastes the way I expected it to.
Someone I know once remarked on the absurdity of traveling a great distance just for a deli visit. They thought, "This place really needs to live up to the hype." However, Liebman's managed to exceed expectations. It offered them a taste of the old, homey Manhattan, a rarity these days.
During the journey, they mentioned Liebman's to a fellow traveler, who quickly recommended Katz's instead, citing their experience of Katz's catering their baby shower.
Of course, Katz's is well-known, but, as my friend discovered, Liebman's offers its own unique, understated delights that many are yet to uncover.
Enjoyed some fresh pastrami and rye sandwich with some pickles on the side. Sandwich was delicious and definitely recommend. this establishment has been here since 1953. Great Jewish deli, food is excellent as well as the ambiance, also old time music playing in the background.
Liebman's is a staple. Quiet possibly the best restaurant in Riverdale. The pastrami might be the best I've ever had. Certainly the best stuffed Cabbage too. Some people have complained about the prices, but it's 100% worth it.
Good pastrami sandwiches and matzoh ball soup.
A Tradition Old school Kosher Delicatessen & Restaurant here in The Bronx Very much Reminiscent of the old diners from back in the day. clean great service. Excellent food and...Matzo ball soup is to die for.😋
This was my first Jewish deli experience and I guess it was okay. Don't have any real complaints. I'm a foodie, so my expectations are high when it comes to taste...and the food was just average.
We ordered here for dinner last night. The food from this place was excellent! We had the meatloaf, corned beef and pastrami, potato knishes and babka. Large portions and really fresh tasting food! Even leftovers were delicious. Definitely planning to order from here again.
Love going out to riverdale and eating at Liebman's, in the top top tier of Jewish delis. Pastrami was excellent as was kreplach. The atmosphere is old school and adds to the experience. I wish I could go more!
Old world charm with super-friendly staff.
Ordered the combination Pastrami & Corned Beef sandwich which comes stacked high with loads of finely sliced meats. My wife and I had were full eating just one sandwich! They also plunked down a bowl of pickles and coleslaw - probably the best I have ever had.
Its a must do for anyone who is trying the NY City of old movies. Make sure you are not in a rush when you visit them in the Bronx - its a place to experience and take in.
A friend who lived in the area turned me onto Liebman's. One of the best old school Deli's I've been to in years. Think Katz's without the attitude.... The lean corned beef is absolutely amazing. I would have given them 5 stars but they were out of pastrami! The woman next to me online said they run out quickly. I guess if you want pastrami- get there early! Some of the best knishes I've ever had. I really want to go back for the pastrami! Next time.
