If I ask you to think about Red Hook, Brooklyn, the odds are that you're going to think about the Fairway and its immediate area. Little shops, a winery, some restaurants, artists, and rowhomes that sell for way more than you'd expect given that this is a flood zone. In the summer, girls in sundresses ride bicycles with baskets as people wander the cobblestone lanes eating frozen key lime pie pops, enjoying the sweet smell of the ocean. But there is a second Red Hook just a few blocks away towards the BQE. Housing projects, taxi repair depots, and a liquor store whose Yelp review states, without a hint of sarcasm: "Out of all the bulletproof liquor stores I've ever been to in Brooklyn this is by far the cleanest..." This is pre-gentrification Red Hook and this is where Defonte's exists; on the ground floor of what would otherwise look like a cutseyfied abandoned brownstone.
Potato, egg, & cheese....Heaven in a sandwich! I will drive to Brooklyn just to have this Sandwich when I am in town. I know they have other great food, but I can't seem to get past the PE&C! LOVE it!
The food use 2 be much better.
Its true. Gigantic sandwiches. This is the original location, and this is the location you should go. I don't know why, but the sandwiches at this location are just better. Beware that this place has no area to eat. Its grab and go. I recommend biking over grabbing a sandwich and going to the park behind IKEA to eat it. The sandwiches with eggplant are the best.
Super delicious sandwiches. The small ones are gigantic. In Red Hook.
Can't beat this Old fashioned Italian sandwich shop. I literally drive an hour and half every other Saturday from Long Island for their addictive sandwiches. It's probably one the best sandwich shops around. All their sandwiches are FRESH and delicious. Roast beef sandwich dipped in gravy is way better than Brennan & Carrs. Their potatoes and eggs sandwich reminds me of legendary Dom and Sals on Ave. U.
Fresh fried calamari and fried shrimp on Fridays are to die for. Mangia.
It's an old school type of joint. Italian pictures and all that...Upfront the staff is nice and the sandwich I had was good. It was a pastrami reuben with Russian dressing. Bribed Olives were quite tasty... No seats inside, but picnic tables outside. I would try it again... It's kind of out of the way....

The bread was a little dry and they didn’t put that much Turkey on the wich, I loved every bite of it I’ll tell you now. It was fantastic. I ordered “The health” sando. Staff was nice and welcoming. Sad that I only got the chance to visit on my last day vacationing. In this part of Brooklyn that is very laid back. I will be back.
We stopped here before a cruise. Very close to the Brooklyn cruise port. We had no idea this place had been on Guy Fieri's show. Sandwich was huge, and so good.
NYC is a city with many great sandwich spots and Defonte’s is a standout. A wide variety of menu offerings, though the Shrimp Po Boy (only available on Fridays) is my personal favorite. I have yet to have a sandwich from here that isn’t very good to great!
Everything I have ordered has been amazing! I got the Chicken Parm with Mozzarella w/roasted peppers. The following time I got the eggplant parm special with Vodka sauce and as my friend said “I almost cried after eating that sandwich”. Haha, but seriously everything tastes fresh. I usually call in advance to order bc the lines look long, and move fast, but I’m on limited lunch time. The workers are friendly and very efficient. The only thing that’s a little inconvenient is that’s it’s Cash only 🙁
Got the roast beef, mozzarella, eggplant sandwich for $17. Had high expectations but was not impressed. Felt like I could have got this sandwich from anywhere. Roast beef was nice and tender but the sandwich was missing flavor. Could be my fault as I waited 15 mins before eating. The bread also lost it's crisp probably due to the wait. I would have like the sub to be warmer like a hot sub instead of lukewarm/cold. 7.5/10.
WOWEWOWWOW BEST DELI IN NEW YORK CITY HANDS DOWN. I WISH THEY PAID ME IN PASTRAMI TO WRITE THIS. UNBELIEVABLE. They were so good we went back for lunch THE NEXT DAY AND GUESS WHAT STILL LIT LIKE THE 4TH OF JULY! Seriously would go here everyday if i could. Can’t wait to take every person I know. Staff is amazing. Bring your pup, they might get scraps 😍😍
This is the best sandwich shop in the world. I don’t eat meat and I come here and get the fried eggplant hero and they make it perfectly melt in your mouth every Time. The large hero is 17 dollars but honestly it is an amazing value. You could share it easily with four to six people if you just all want a nice solid little sample. It’s huge and very substantial. If you come nyc from anywhere in the world and love fried eggplant or sandwiches you must go out of your way to come here. I’m sure the meat offerings are great too. Pictures is fried eggplant with provolone and broccoli rabe
The Italian Combo is delicious. The sauce blends the flavors together so it’s more than the sun of its parts. A small is enough for two I’d say.
Order the Roast Pork Special. Best sandwich I’ve ever had. Stop by for one before your cruise. It’ll be the best thing you eat all week.
Fast hot food fresh bread and ingredients and warm service.
This is a great sandwich shop. Me and my friend had a great time. The fried eggplant is one of the best and they don't skimp on the chicken cutlets. Everything is made right in front of you, so you know it's fresh. And don't get my started on the mozzarella, which was very fresh. Although be warned this place is cash only
I ordered a small Joey D and let me tell you it wasn't very small. I was hoping for a little more flavor. Next time I'll order something with peppers or some spice. Overall, this deli has everything you could possibly need.
Pretty good old sandwich shop. Def old school and a little run down imo. Got a chicken cutlet w melted mozzarella and chopped peppers w balsamic glaze. Very good. Got the small and shared it with my Mom. Nice sized. Sandwich with a bottle of soda 17.95. Word of caution: there's NO parking and no standing in front.
Ive been going here all my life. Im from Staten Island and anyone you ask will know this place. Excellent food and if it’s your first time I’d give the roast beef sandwich a try. Best roast beef sandwich i’ve ever had. Ah and bring cash.
Very enjoyable sandwich with large portions, frankly it’s not cheap. You are buying a sandwich that is good from the top of the crust of the bread to the wet paper you’re tearing a hole through cause you’re gripping -nvm. They have a motivated staff which is what kept service rolling smoothly 15 minutes before closing, when I chose to order. Impressive they made a bunch of sandwiches that big that fast. Not your average staff everybody seemed to be a team , seriously.
