Reviews Old Baku

For a joint birthday party for 3 of us, 13 people celebrated at the Old Baku restaurant in Brooklyn this past Sunday. One of my high school friends is Azeri and he made it easy by setting everything up for us with the staff. The staff was great--showing real hospitality that the Azeris are known for. The food was outstanding. Very similar to Turkish salads and shish kebob, but the spices and seasonings were just different enough to notice. Of special note was the eggplant salad which was outstanding, the grilled meats were done perfectly and the spicy sauce that came with it really made the dish, grape leaves stuffed with lamb, tongue, the sturgeon kebobs, and, yes, we tried the "lambfries" aka lamb testicles fried with onions. Of course, we didn't know that at the time, but it sure gives meaning to the Italian curse that I learned as a kid from my friends: "Your balls are fried with eggs!" In spite of the post dinner culture shock, that dish was damn tasty! The place is set up with private booths inside, and a large dining area in a garden with a lot of guys hanging out schmoozing and drinking coffee. Very comfortable and like I said, the staff made us feel at home and got off on talking with my Azeri friend. I read some of the negative reviews that trashed the place and have to report that our experience was not even remotely close to those other people. As for the guys hanging out in the garden, my buddy called them "chobans"--literally "shepherds" but with the connotation of "hillbilly," "country bumpkin," or "chaim yankel." And damnit if they didn't give the place class!

Old Baku is the best kept secret in Brooklyn. I love the space, the hospitality and the food. The shish kebabs are super fresh and delicious. And the french fries -- actually made from real potatoes -- amazing!! I'm going to recommend you to all my friends.

I have only tried homemade Russian food and I must say Old Baku made me feel like I was in the comfort of someone's home. The food is amazing and the setting is nice and quiet.

It was definitely a unique experience, mainly meant for locals in the know. We sort of took a chance and they were excitedly attentive. It felt like traveling abroad but just blocks from my apt. Everyone was so kind and gracious. Went on a Saturday early evening and there seemed to be mostly families, some groups of friends, having a chill dinner. If you know anything about the genre of restaurant, they often have a live singer performing Eastern European/ Eurasian covers a la karaoke system. Tbh, we found this to be a unique quirk we found endearing and your own perception will impact your time because it really depends on what you want out of it. They did share that they were under new management and would have a new menu soon so should they have those changes, I'd be happy to visit again and see what the differences are on what they have going on. I would say give them a try and be open minded about the experience. Personally, i was thrilled by the quirks. I loved the whole thing. But you know yourself, right?

super fun, old school soviet atmosphere with delicious central asian and soviet cuisine. on friday and saturday nights they have a live singer. between that and the shareable plates, it makes it the perfect place to take a fun group of people. (per other reviewers— they do try to upsell you as often as they can, especially on the compote [juice] but with firm nos, the bills are super reasonable!)

The service was affable, the food homey and delicious. Very deep flavors. We got some comp dishes and I really like the private booth seats with drapes and all. The art on the wall gives great personality to the place and sorta transports you away from Brooklyn and to some faraway place you only read about. I gave it a5star rating

The food is extremely delicious and authentic.Only thing is that they serve some kind of white sauce with dolma instead of regular yogurt. The atmosphere and the live music was so wonderful, it just took me back home - to Azerbaijan. The staff was very friendly. However, the bathroom and overall place was not very clean. I think this place needs some renovation. Also there was a lady, I am not sure if manager or owner who saw me putting my leftover food in my to-go box and then yelled the waiter why he doesn't help me with that. Since I had several leftovers, I wanted to organize them by myself and that is what I told the waiter too when he approached me (even for no reason I would still keep doing it by myself after hearing her yelling). She could have just simply approach me, offer help or just can communicate to the staff politely. Well, I am not sure if I will go back or not but if you happen to go there make sure you leave generous tip for waiter and live music person. To the owner: Please make this place nicer and cleaner and get/provide some training on customer service. There are no many places serving such a good food. I am sure there are many Azerbaijanians, including me who are more than ready/happy to buy good Azerbaijani food and service and support the business providing that combination.
