They have really delicious Szechuan style food. It's probably on par with the stuff I've eaten in the DC Asian suburbs (Rockville) but not quite Boston Chinatown level. One of my friends was pretty shocked to hear that I liked this place better than Xi’an famous foods, which I found to be pretty homogeneous in flavor and excessively oily.
Their interior is pretty no-frills. The waitress communicated better with our friend, who spoke Mandarin to her. There was some mishaps with getting silverware and servingware. Also, they really did not wanna turn on the central air and it was freezing in there!!! The food was good. I recommend the eggplant (which was deep fried before sauteed — pretty new to me!), the pork saute thing (dry not wet), and we also got a fried chicken dish with the dried peppers which is pretty standard.
If I ever find myself in Eastern LI, I would come back but probably not in the winter bc it was seriously so cold in there. I heard all the skewers taste like cumin and little else — so we stayed away from them.
LOL Kitchen and Grill, what an odd name for a Chinese restaurant. It's not readily visible from the road and you have to pull into a side street to access the small parking lot, and getting out of the place can be tricky depending on what type of vehicle you have and how you park. There's a No Turn On Red light as you leave, and the light is pretty long. When we entered, there wasn't a cheerful greeting and service was ok although somewhat strained. Despite all the shortcomings logistics-wise however, once you've eaten here, you will be back.
The food is excellent, and the menu is pretty extensive without many of the usual dishes you see at other Chinese restaurants. The dimsum is made to order, so be prepared to wait about 15-20 minutes. Try all the barbecued skewers, except maybe for the beef-wrapped enoki mushrooms. Enokis are chewy no matter how you cook them. The lamb was gloriously seasoned and very tasty although a tad on the salty and spicy side, but that's how it should be for Chinese cooking. There's no mint jelly here. There was so much I wanted to try, we saw some diners with a hot pot that I would have gotten except that some in my party can't handle spicy. Maybe next time. We ordered about 5-6 different dimsum items, 3 different types of skewers and a couple of conventional Chinese dishes. All were very good. I didn't like the tea they had though, lol.
Overall, we're coming back and bringing more people that can handle the spicy stuff!
Really authentic and tasty Chinese food. We ordered skewers, chicken wings, dried pot and other stuff. Would highly recommend.
Authentic and tasty Chinese food. The skewers are good and we'll flavoured. The other dishes are typical authentic Chinese fare. Decor and service are simple, with menus laminated into the tables.
Very small hole in the wall mom and pop type of place with amazing food. The staff is friendly the food is great.
Delicious Chinese food. It is not Americanized so don't expect the usual fair. They do have some dishes like chicken and broccoli so don't be scared off. The egg custard bun is a delicious sweet bun and the pork bun is savory. I will definitely go back.
Finally a local place with a different take on Asian food. Northern Hot Pot was amazing. Price point is good. The area to eat in is tiny but cozy. Only negative is communication. If you order appetizer and main they are likely to come together. If you can overlook the minor miscommunication this place is a real find
Food was good but soup dumplings had no soup in them!?!??? Only reason I went here was for that after having them in Flushings Chinatown a few days earlier and wanted them again but don't bother here. Other then that it was a great place. Large portions
This place is truly a tiny hole in the wall with AMAZING food OMG the taste was GREAT!!!...FYI: allergy warning some of traditional dishes have shell fish sauce...BUT!!! Tell them and they maybe alter the recipe to omit the allergy. IE Chicken and broccoli has oyster sauce in it they told me the can omit it. Won't taste authentic but you won't have a trip to the hospital. Just ask see what they can do!
I'm here every week (this is no lie). From the skewers and pork buns, to sweet corn pancakes there hasn't been a thing I've ordered that I've been unimpressed with. Great atmosphere and staff. An all around pleasure to eat here.
