Tucked away on charming Queen Street, Poogan’s Porch is Charleston’s oldest independent culinary establishments, with a fresh approach to Lowcountry cuisine. Recognized by Martha Stewart Living, Southern Living and The Travel Channel among many others, this beautifully restored Victorian house is the perfect southern spot for daily brunch and dinner.Since opening in 1976, Poogan’s Porch has been a favorite of well-known celebrities, politicians, tourists and locals alike who rave about this Southern institution. Whether it’s a warm homemade buttermilk biscuit and sausage gravy, a bowl of she-crab soup, or our signature buttermilk fried chicken, your meal at Poogan’s Porch will be unforgettable.
Went for Saturday brunch. Tried a lot of things. Quality of ingredients and preparation were all exceptional; the flavors were all very good but few were “to die for”. Nothing here would make me go out of my way to return except the biscuits, but I was not disappointed by anything either. I would be very happy to return.
* Biscuits with butter are free – perhaps the best biscuits I’ve ever had, anywhere
* Fried green tomatoes – very good
* She crab soup – incredibly delicious! But I’ve only had this once before, so cannot really compare
* Biscuits and gravy – gravy was fine but not great – would not pay for this again (just eat the plain biscuits)
* Shrimp and grits – very good, I’ve had better
* Short rib omelette – very good, I’ve had better
* Chicken and waffles – very good, I’ve had better
* Chicken fried pork chop – very good
* Homestyle potatoes (came with above) were delicious – well done, and a great mild red pepper sauce
Charming location and building - it fits every Charleston expectation one would have for an old southern home converted into a restaurant. Fireplaces in every room, limited number of tables give it the intimacy many want. I'm pregnant and have a horrible aversion to chicken....and unfortunately many of the menu brunch items I would have ordered were chicken...so I struggled for an actual lunch item. I settled on the baby kale pimento cheese Caesar salad and a cup of the she crab soup. Husband got the traditional breakfast. I loved the salad - the pickled onions were awesome and then mixture of pimento cheese with Caesar just felt like they should have been paired together the whole time. The baby did not like the she crab soup - but as someone who loves it pre-pregnancy- I think it would have been great. Husband like his except the cup of fresh watermelon was warm and that was not appealing to him. Overall it was good and service was great!
Friendly and helpful staff. We were able to walk right in and eat immediately for brunch. Meals were tasty and a good value. Excellent biscuits and gravy.
Quientesential south. Biscuits and gravy = wow. Bloody mary = 10. Chicken and waffles = James Beard worthy.
You have to sit on the outdoor porch. All the southern charm you want over an hour.
We were recommended here by 3 different friends and totally understood why. The building is charming and the waitstaff was very friendly. The homemade biscuits they serve you are DELICIOUS. Honestly one of the best parts of the meal! We ordered fried green tomatoes as the appetizer and they were very good as well. (Not the best I've ever had, but very good none the less). I ordered the shrimp and grits and my husband ordered the fried chicken sandwich. I've never had shrimp and grits before and always thought I hated grits, but they turned me around! So good! My husband loved the Texas Pete honey jus on the chicken. We were both really stuffed and pleased with our meals!
Love it so much!! The food is great and so is the atmosphere! I came to celebrate the end of the semester with my parents and it was delicious!! ❤️❤️❤️😆
This is my favorite restaurant in the world, at least for now. I have been numerous times and have always had a five star experience from the food, staff and atmosphere. This is my go to place in Charleston and for anyone living there that likes food they will know that is a tough decision. The fried chicken they serve is amazing, the best in the city. All the appetizers are great, and the biscuits they serve you when you arrive are always hot and freshly cooked. Highly recommend trying if you are visiting the city or living there.
Located next door to Husk is Poogan’s Porch. We ate lunch here the third day of our trip. Where does the name come from? The Victorian house was built in 1888, and in 1976 the then owners sold the house and moved away, leaving their dog, Poogan. The dog served as the official greeter at his post on the porch, so they thought it was only fitting to name the restaurant after him.
Yummy, local, homemade fare. The food, service, and atmosphere were all fantastic! My husband and I got fried chicken and fried catfish and they were both delicious.
Great food and great service. We came for lunch and food was very good. I have the fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and substituted green beans for collard greens. The chicken was two pieces of boneless chicken. I didn't know the lunch portion would be so big. I couldn't eat it all. Hubby got the shrimp and grits. Food was hot, fresh and homemade. The biscuits are fabulous.
The ladies and I had a fabulous lowcountry lunch at Poogan's Porch; located on charming Queen Street in an elegantly restored Victorian mansion. We started with a basket of warm, fluffy buttermilk biscuits and classic Aviation martinis (gin, maraschino liquor, creme de violette, lemon). We also shared an order of their lust-worthy
We eat at Poogan's every time we're in Charleston, and we enjoy it every time. Their biscuits, Mac 'n cheese, fried chicken, salads...well, I've never had anything here that I didn't enjoy. Servers are always friendly. The porch is our favorite place to sit, although inside is
Amazing! The food and service were both great. I ordered the fried chicken and it was the best I've ever had. My boyfriend ordered the ribs which fell off the bone they were so tender. Great place and will definitely be going again!
Thumbs Up!!!!. My daughters' and I had a girls vacation in your lovely city of Charleston. We had dinner at Poogan's Porch one night and had a great experience. Our waiter was Tyler. He gave us recommendations of things we might like and we were not disappointed. The service and the food were excellent. We definitely give this restaurant and Tyler a big thumbs up!!!!
Outstanding!!. The food was amazing! Fried chicken rivaled my sweet gramma's!!!
The service was equally outstanding!
Fantastic evening. What a lovely, quaint restaurant in a charming old Charleston home. Service was fantastic, food was exquisite. We were pleasantly surprised! Nice bar too and a lively atmosphere. Highly recommend this classy restaurant... and very convenient to the Dock Street Theatre and other nearby attractions on Meeting Street/King Street area.
Crab Cake Benedict. Crab cakes were crispy, eggs perfectly poached and served on biscuits with the best hollandaise in town.
I liked It, But.... At Poogan;s Porch I had an almost great meal. The service was great, not a thing to complain about. Second, the atmosphere is perfect for the food -- an older house where meals are served downstairs, upstairs, on the original porch or in the front yard. Very charming. The food was good but golly I wanted and expected it to be better. I had the breaded porkchop and it was cooked perfectly, but was a bit bland. It needed a hearty gravy, and the sauce provided was thin and sweet. The mac and cheese acompaniment was just average. I truly can get better at my local Corner Bakery.
One in my party had the Ribs and Mac. The ribs were way overcooked. The other two both had the Shellfish and grits, and they were fairly satisfied with it. The roasted beets appetizer on the other hand was under roasted.
So, I'll say I like it but I'd give it 3 1/2 stars. Maybe on another night it might be a 4. I might go back, I might not.
Outstanding food, service and atmosphere!! We went with some close friends and made a long evening out of our visit. We were sure to tip our waiter well ( fully deserved) after taking the table for close to three hours, and then we went next door to Husk Bar for some drinks. A memorable night that I highly recommend.
Nice "up scale" restaurant, good sized (for the price) portions southern cooking. I love the area around Queen street, such a gorgeous area. I was a little worried about Poogan's. It looks nice and has great reviews, but there are a lot times where I've been up an "up scale" (not the best term, as it isn't the most expensive, but it is higher than average and more than I'm comfortably to spend every weekend on dinner) where the food is delicious, but no filling. I really enjoyed the food at Poogan's Porch, it was delicious, and for the most part filling. I was expecting less (food) than what we actually got. I love the old house, very quaint. I would have liked more than just one biscuit per person, but they were yummy. I wasn't overly thrilled with the whole menu, but there are a few things that did sound good. Well worth the stop if you're a fan of southern cooking
Amazing food! Friendly staff and great atmosphere. My husband and I did not have a reservation but only had to wait about 20 minutes for our table during which time we enjoyed sitting at the bar visiting with the bartender.
Eat here!. Quaint friendly casual atmosphere. "To Die For" mac and cheese. Bibb salad was perfect. Waitress was sweet and always there when you need her. Biscuits were soft and airy. Fried chicken was so much that the rest was a midnight snack.
Absolutely lovely brunch. The title says it all WONDERFUL BRUNCH! great menu, great/fresh good and lovely dining room. WE left full and happy!
Everything was fantastic!!. We came downtown for a casual Spoleto experience while walking around downtown with a pup. Since we were downtown it seemed reasonable to find outdoor seating where we would be able to keep the dog with us. The closest one I could find online was Poogan's Porch. The hostess welcomed putting us on the waitlist for a porch table so the dog could be with us while we ate. It was especially nice that we could walk around with the dog until she texted that a table was ready. It was a convenient corner table, and when we asked for some water for the dog, our server brought a dog bowl of water. Even though we were on the porch with a pooch, we were never treated like an inconvenience. Our server was fantastic. The food was great! The Pimento Cheese Fritters are wonderful as is the Mac & Cheese- the gouda/ham make a great combination. My friend enjoyed his grouper with everything that it came with. We thoroughly enjoyed the food, service, and not having to leave the dog in the car. Dining inside seemed more reservation formal, and we might have been a bit uncomfortable dining inside after spending the day walking around. We're glad to have been able to have a Poogan's Porch experience!
Prepare your checkbook before you go, but it is worth every penny. Everything was top notch and delicious. This place is perfect for locals and visitors, alike. There is no "dress code" but a T-shirt and shorts are a little out of place.
Great food and service!. After receiving not the best service at a different restaurant the night before, Poogan's Porch more than delivered! The food was delicious - had the fried green tomatoes with an incredible chutney to start and then the short ribs for dinner. Honestly, though, it is the service that has me writing this review. Everyone was friendly and engaging, and it really made the night!
Have been to Poogans twice and had fantastic experience both times. It is our favorite restaurant in Charleston. Excellent food, great service and cozy atmosphere. Had the famous fried chicken - delicious.
One of the best breakfasts in Charleston. The steak and eggs were the best I have ever had. Our waiter, Nick, did an excellent job and gave us great service. My mom got the Chicken and Waffles, which were pretty good but I would definitely recommend the steak and eggs between the 2. Good coffee as well!
Good for lunch - great for brunch. Have eaten here a few times. Always good. Biscuits are amazing. Watermelon salad great for light lunch! If you have never been you have to go to brunch.
AWESOME. Best biscuits ever! Mac n cheese appetizer was delicious as was everything we ordered. Great ambiance. Great service. This is my new favorite place in Charleston!
Great breakfast. Charleston fry lived up to all my expectations.
Delish. Best Shrimp and Grits in the history of the universe. Awesome ambiance.
So good! The fried green tomatoes and shrimp, sausage, and grits apps were delicious. I had the fried catfish and I have to say that it was the best catfish ever! I'm from Mississippi (catfish capital) too.. My wife had the mahi mahi and loved it. This place is more of a local secret and a must go for anyone looking for a great southern meal in a traditional charleston cottage built in the 1800's.
Some of the best fried chicken I've had. Big enough portion to share too.
I would recommend a reservation for dinner. And, like many other restaurants in Charleston, you may feel a bit under dressed in shorts & a T.
Enjoyable Breakfast. My wife and I went for Sunday breakfast and had an enjoyable time. The atmosphere was wonderful and the staff did an excellent job from the moment we walked in until we left. We had the center table on the upstairs porch and enjoyed watching Charleston wake up. We started a coffee and a Blody Mary. We than shared the She Crab soup which was really flavorful. Not really a breakfast item but we did not want to miss the chance to try it. We then had the Shrimp and Grits, Crab Cake Benedict, the Cinnamon French Toast and a side of biscuits and gravy. The food overall was very good. What really put it over the top was the location. I would go back again to try out lunch next time.
This place is amazing!!! My husband and I finally went for lunch this week for Charleston restaurant week we ended up just ordering from the regular menu we didn't want to be limited WE ARE IN LOVE best restaurant we've tried in Charleston thus far. The gator was the BEST we've had! The fried green tomatoes as well shrimp and grits AMAZING we give this place FIVE stars for sure and will be going back for more. Oh and service was amazing as well the upstairs patio/porch was so perfect and private.
Redeemed Themselves. I had heard many great things about Poogan's Porch, that naturally I had to pay them a visit. I was specially excited about trying the famous shrimps and grits. When I arrived at the restaurant I was told that there would be a 20 minute wait, but that I was welcome to sit at the bar. I don't like to drink when I travel, so I sat at a table and tried to figure out whether they had WiFi. They seemed to according to my phone (it was detecting a signal). But I needed a password. So I tried to get a staff member's attention and it was like pulling teeth. I managed to get one girl and she quickly gave me the password. Yeh! So I typed it in and waited for permission....nothing. Maybe I heard it wrong? So I summoned another staff member and believe me, getting someone's attention was hard! When I finally did she told me that she had no idea what the password was or even if they had WiFi. She was so rude about it! Looking around me I was tempted to leave. The staff seemed to be running around like chickens without heads, and I felt so small. Yes, I know I am small. Geesh. Anyway, I then decided to walk over to the hostess and asked her for the code, "oh sorry, it says that we have WiFi but we really don't." What the hell?! Argh this place was getting under my skin! But they called my name just then and I gave in. Sigh. You know when you have invested so much of yourself in something that you just have to see it through? This is one example of that.
I was led to the second floor and wow, it was quiet. And organized. What a difference from the mayhem downstairs. I was seated and immediately began reading the menu. Who am I kidding? I knew exactly what I wanted from the night before when I meticulously studied the menu. So when my waitress arrived I asked her if I could get the shrimps and grits minus the onions. "No problem," she said. Woohoo! To drink I ordered sweet tea. I have been drinking sweet tea like it's water here in Charleston. Love that they give you unlimited refills! Before I received my main, I was given 2 steaming hot biscuits with sweet butter (they added honey maybe?). I slathered butter on that baby and off to heaven I went. But wait! It gets better! As I devoured my biscuits, a man in a tie came over and placed my food in front of me. Oh my, he was handsome (look at me, being all polite--it's the Southern thing to do. Normally I would just say, "damn! He is hot!" After watching him walk away...sigh, I began to study my dish. Darn it! The gravy had onions in it! But they are big pieces. Let me try to remove them. So I spent a good 5 minutes dissecting my dish and removing the onions. I know I should have said something, but I hate having to point out that there was an error made in my food. And well, maybe I did not want to look like a whiny child in front of Mr. Handsome. So I was a good girl and nitpicked my meal. Sorry to say, but I did not like it (both the picking and the dish). And it get's worse; every shrimp except one had the intestine still intact (the black line that you see on shrimp). So there I sat cleaning my shrimp too. Needless to say, I lost my appetite and asked for my bill. The waitress whose name I forgot (sorry!) asked me if there was a problem. I explained to her my issue with the onions and intestine. She noted that I should have told her earlier, but I acknowledged that it was on me and should have noted it and I took full responsibility for not bringing my concerns to her attention. She took my plate away and I sat there waiting for my bill. Then Mr. Handsome strolled in. Sigh. He came over and told me that he took care of the bill and apologized for the mishap. Yep, I am in love. They were so professional about the whole situation and I did leave happy. For several reasons, some of which you may have guessed...;)
2 days later. I returned. Stalker! Some of you may be thinking, but no! I wanted to give them another shot. Plus it was holiday and so many places were closed and my hotel was down the street. I swear! Anywho, I walked in and asked how long it would be to get a table..blah blah blah...where is he??? Not here. :(
I was seated within 5 minutes and this time I did not know what I wanted to order. So I went with something safe and something that I was pretty confident I was going to like. I ordered collard greens, mash potatoes, fried chicken and gravy. With sweet tea of course! And like before I inhaled my biscuit. This time they only gave me one. Good thing because I eat too many of those. Yes, I was still looking around the room looking for Mr. Handsome, but nothing.
So what did I think about the food 2nd time around? Fantastic! The collard greens were a little bitter but I rather they be bitter than salty. The chicken was moist and all white meat without any fat. The mash potatoes were buttery and soft. All in all I was a very happy camper where the food was concerned. My 2nd visit was bittersweet, but Poogan's definitely redeemed themselves.
Great food! If you sit on the porch be prepared to hear walking tours all night, with one pit stop being directly to the left of Poogan's Porch

Waitstaff was top notch. Food was excellent. We had Scallops with Grit Cake and Shrimp & Grits . The scallops may have been the meal of the trip. We also started with the Pimento Cheese Fritters and they were incredible. Loved it. Highly recommend.
Wonderful!. I have gotten the plantation fried chicken and the shrimp and grits and both were wonderful. They also have the most amazing macaroni and cheese; seriously out of this world. Staff is always very nice and attentive.
Excellent food. The red snapper was amazing! Highly recommend
The ambiance was perfect for the menu. Fritters, biscuits and duck grilled cheese... Should I even say more.
Wow..... This place was a.... Wow.....
This place was amazing. You will have not only amazing food but great southern hospitality. We had 14 people in our group and our waiter was exceptional. Everyone's meals were phenomenal. I can't wait to vacation here again because I will be coming back!
I used to frequent this place a lot when I lived in charleston, I love their food, their poached eggs are spot on. I wish they would fix their continuous mildew smell in the restaurant though. Kept us full all day.
One word...YUM. Just about ANYTHING you get here will be amazing. I always go here for any occasion I can. Anyone that tries to get me to go somewhere else can forget about it. I love it!!! I just wish you could get brunch with smaller parties. I would go with my boyfriend every weekend but I haven't made it to the brunch yet because nobody can get their acts together and get up that early. Ugh
I love Poogan's- the ambiance is lovely, the food is great. The shrimp & grits are my favorite- with the pimento cheese fitters!
Fun place with excellent service.
Wife and I had brunch here late on a Saturday morning. The old house the restaurant is in makes for a great Charleston feel, the Bloody Mary's were spicy and just strong enough and the service was awesome. Our waiter, David, was friendly, fast, attentive and appeared to really enjoy his job. The biscuits and honey butter were incredible - best restaurant biscuit I've ever had. The coffee was strong, fresh and local and everything we ate was delicious. We decided to tie on the proverbial food bag and order a breakfast app of French toast. It was crispy and fluffy and the pecans and strawberries stepped it up a notch. For our entrees, I had the shrimp and grits and my wife had the chicken and waffle. We highly recommend both. Our only regret was that we didn't get to try the fish and grits which sounded stellar. Go there.
Absolutely loved their service. The actual dining area was so adorable. Way better than I expected :) fried chicken and greens to die for.
Shrimp and grits was excellent. Mimosas were strong and delicious and the biscuits were heavenly. Almost forgot the mashed potatoes which were just as wonderful as everything else. Keep up the good work
First time. I really enjoyed our time here, The waiter was excellent, service was fast, food came out very fast.
Food tasted great. Will be back next time for our vacation.
Loved it!. This is the second time that I've eaten at PP, and once again, the Pimento Cheese Fritters were the most memorable part of the entire meal. Seriously, even if you think you don't like pimento cheese, you MUST give these a try. My mom and I also ordered an appetizer off the daily specials, the Pork Belly Three Ways. Also delicious.
As other reviewers have mentioned, the biscuits are flaky and sweet and buttery. Yum.
For our main courses, my mom got the Buttermilk Fried Chicken with Mashed Potatoes and Pimento Slaw. Moist, tender, and a perfect balance of spices. (The accompanying mashed potatoes have sage in them, but it's not too overpowering.) I got the Duck Breast with Duck Confit and Potato Gnocchi--fat was rendered perfectly on the breast, and the confit was mixed with some wilted arugula. I'm not a huge fan of gnocchi in general, but this was hands down the best gnocchi I've ever had. The merlot gastrique was the perfect sweet note for tying all of these rich, salty elements together.
My only regret is that we were staying in a hotel that didn't have a fridge in the room. I stuffed myself, and STILL didn't finish a lot of my entree.
Very good brunch. For the price, you can't beat it in Charleston. The Pulled Pork Benedict is good. Also make sure you try the Pimento Cheese fritters. You won't regret it.
She-crab soup and shrimp and grits were fantastic. Don't miss the hot biscuits either!
Had the salmon and cheese grits with boiled spinach. It was excellent.

Excellent meal last night! I had the pan-seared scallops, while my husband had the calabash shrimp. Biscuits were delicious, and I could have eatten several. The zucchini-ice cream cake was a very nice way to cap off the meal, but I did need to wait a bit for it to thaw, as it was so hard when first delivered to the table that I could not get a spoon through it. Will definitely return the next time we are in Charleston.
Poogan's Porch Perfect Entree Pairings. Dinner Apr 21
Highlights of the dining experience - Great entrees with perfectly paired sides!
Pan Seared Jumbo Sea Scallops were awesome! Fresh, juicy and cooked perfectly. The accompanying Grit Cake and Spinach were perfect sides.
Bourbon Braised Beef Brisket was top notch. Very flavorful and lots of meat with little fat. The side of Cheddar Croquettes and Broccolini we're delightful.
Double Cut Pork Chop was thick, juicy and cooked just right. It was almost to big to eat ..did I just say that? The Warm Smoked Gouda Potato Salad was heavenly and it also came with the best tasting Brussels Sprouts ever!
Biscuits were amazing as well...ask for them as soon as they come to take u drink order.
Their sauces....everything sauce we got on every dish, appetizer or side was incredible.
Low-lights of the dining experience:
The back dining hall was extremely loud. Couldn't have a conversation at table, let alone hear the waitress. They need some "sound absorbing" decorations or something in there.
Not overwhelmed by appetizers either. The special Fried Quail was just ok. The Fried Ravioli was bland and tasteless and if their was BBQ Pork in there, it wasn't enough to notice via sight or taste. The She Crab Soup was overly peppered - which way over powered the crab taste,
Desert was a special Strawberry Trifle and it wasn't very special. It came out in a glass tumbler and they gave us forks. Poor presentation and very pedestrian.
Overall I am very glad we went. The main courses were outstanding and I would like to try the Fried Chicken dishes.
The pimento fritters are excellent. Loved the quaint southern charm. Loved it.
Exceptional Food and Great Service. We went for dinner on a Thursday night. We had reservations which was nice to avoid waiting. The staff was very friendly. We had the She-crab soup and Fried green tomatoes to start. For dinner, my wife had the buttermilk fried chicken and I had the Seared Scallops. We had the bread pudding to finish off the night. Everything was fresh and delicious. And the biscuits were everything you would expect from a great Southern restaurant. Highly recommended.
Great breakfast. I had breakfast as well as dinner here both meals were excellent. I've eaten at Husk and enjoyed the food here more.
Step it up! Wonderful theme, pet friendly. Food needs to keep pace with charleston peers. Scallops were good, not great. Same with soup and salad.
Their fried alligator is AMAZING!!!
I had the pimiento fritters, which were wonderful, and the shrimp and grits. I actually moaned out loud. Definitely the best meal on this vacation.
Yay for ghosts!. I tried this place out after taking a ghost tour. I hate to say, I'd never even heard of it before then. This atmosphere was wonderful, service was beyond compare, food pretty much like everything else I've eaten in the south, so nothing special, but still petty good. I left very happy with my chose for eating here and next time I have family in town, I want to take them back.
Went for lunch and had the best shrimp and grits. fried green tomatoes were awesome and so are the biscuits! a must try! service also professional and warm
Best Biscuits!. This place is good, especially for breakfast.
Hmmm.... Went last Sunday for brunch; I was very excited to try this place (based on a coworkers rec) and was a bit disappointed. It was just ok, kinda of reminded me of hotel room service. I did enjoy the half-price mimosas. I probably wouldn't go back.
Above Average. The restaurant, like everything else in Charleston is old. However, this is one of those places where the history, food, and service make it special. I have had a few meals that were less than expected at Poogan's, but always look forward to coming back.
My favorite meal during my visit. I LOVED this place. The pimento cheese balls appetizers were amazing. My husband's BBQ benedict was ridiculous. Rich, but not overpowering. The biscuits are too die for and the service was fantastic. I will visit this place again next visit.
Simply a lovely place. Could use a little cleaning and upgrades. My friend ordered the meatloaf special. It was a wonderful dish served with whipped potatoes and greens. I ordered the buttermilk chicken served with whipped potatoes and green beans. My chicken was slight overcooked :( the potatoes and beans were great. Parking is an issue on Queen St, come ready to walk a few blocks or taxi. Our server was wonderful, a very attentive young man who took care of our needs.
Great food with nice portions! It was the best cooked pork chop I have had. My husband ordered the flounder, and loved it as well.
My kind of pork chop. I usually try to eat lite at lunch but I couldn't resist the southern style pork chop on Poogan's lunch menu. Thanks to my lack of will power I enjoyed a pork chop to die for.
Still wonderful!. I dined at Poogan's Porch 20 years ago and it was great.
We recently returned and it was even better than I remembered. While in the Charleston area I had shrimp and grits at three upscale restaurants and, while all were good, none compared to Poogan's.
The couple we were with had two other dishes and raved about those as well. Our friend declared the bread pudding to be the best she had ever had.
Some places go down hill over time, but not "the Porch"!
Great food, great location and best Biscuits in town. Now the bad part. REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY BAD SERVICE.. From the host to the server. So bad hard to go back.

At home at the Porch. We really enjoyed the food and atmosphere here. Not our favorite restaurant in Charleston, but we had a very nice meal here the night we visited. The fact the namesake dog is buried in the front yard - while irrelevant to the food - is a kitschy little detail we liked.
From walking in to a beautifully Christmas decorated old Charleston building, you know this is going to be great! We shared the French toast for an appetizer, paired with the pimento cheese balls. Both amazing! The next was a family style meal of breakfast entres. I have to recommend the fried pork chop, it's amazing! Great service, would certainly visit again.
The food doesn't fail. I returned here after 2 decades although I've been in Charleston several times since 2002. Poogan's Porch is a Charleston staple. My server convinced me to try the banana pudding. It was overly thick and a banana hunt ensued. I would prefer more bananas. I would recommend sticking with pecan pie. The mocktail was tasty. The server was young. Failed to refill water or offer coffee with dessert during brunch. She seemed a bit overwhelmed or unconcerned although pleasant enough. I overheard her say she's a recent college graduate. So, hopefully, she'll learn better etiquette in a delightful southern city. The shrimp and grits may be the best in the city especially for lunch as in all these years I've tried most of the restaurants! Thank you to this amazing restaurant and home of the ghost dog!
The GOOD - The she crab soup was really good - it had the Sherry in it still. Some previous reviewer stated that it no longer did but it was for sure in there.
The chicken was tender and well seasoned. The waffles were fluffy.
Get the biscuits and butter, really light fluffy and with a little sweet because of the honey butter.
The mimosas were strong, wow - I left with a buzz.
Our server was just delightful - Christina.
The BAD - the mac and cheese was underwhelming. No flavor, and relatively cold.
The hostess was just unnecessarily indifferent, really rude.
Simply amazing. It is always such a treat to have lunch at Poogan's Porch when we visit Charleston SC. You can make a reservation as well! I highly recommend the chicken and waffles. Also delicious is the chicken sandwich! If you have never been, do yourself a favor and go to Poogan's. It will become a favorite of yours! Also they allow pets on the porch which is so great if you are visiting Charleston with pets.
Food and service were good. Even though our res showed for a different location, they accommodated our large group immediately. That was awesome. One thing that stood out about the food was its good presentation. I also remember the crust of the fried pork chop to be well seasoned. I enjoyed the experience.
We came in for lunch looking for an inexpensive meal, for which this place is really good!
Ordered the French toast which is absolutely massive (but somehow not too heavy) and the chicken sandwich which come with the sidewinder fries that are so so good! Overall the food was pretty good.
Poogan's Porch was absolutely amazing! I made a reservation two days before as I was bringing my dog and wanted to make sure we were able to get outdoor seating. When we arrived we were seated right away on the patio in the back on the first floor and there was a water bowl already waiting. Our waitress Keri, filled up the water bowl right away for my dog which I very much appreciated. Keri was very sweet and accommodating to not only me but my dog as well. We ordered the fried green tomatoes and they were absolutely phenomenal! The bacon jam and pimento cheese sauce that it comes with on the side was a perfect pairing! The shrimp and grits are incredible. The portion size was a bit big for me so I did not finish it but did take it to go. I also ordered one of the mock-tails on the menu which was delicious! I would highly recommend both dishes when you go there. It was a hot sunny day but the patio where we were was covered and there was a fan outside which helped a lot. I will definitely be back next time in Charleston!
We were looking for a place for dinner in Downtown Charleston and this place popped up. We went during weekday and no wait at all. We ordered She crab soup, famous Fried chicken, the Catch of the day (Grouper) with green bean and the red rice and ended with Pecan pie. They gave us warm biscuit as soon as we sat down which was good. The soup is delicious. The fish is moist and flavorful. The fried chicken is very tasty and the pecan pie with vanilla ice-crean finished the day. It's a must try restaurant when you are at Charleston.
This was recommended by my taxi driver from the airport who is a local. It did not disappoint. The venue was very nice and historically beautiful. Their fried chicken sandwich was the best I have had. There was not a huge menu, but the options we had were really good. Definitely a must have if your are in Charleston.
We had a wonderful night at Poogans! Atmosphere is so relaxing and the service was friendly and attentive. We started off with the fried green tomatoes. Best I have had because of the pimento cheese !!! The best!! We had fried chicken, a must, so so crispy and shrimp and grits! Both were very good!
