Phenomenal! Had lunch with my son the foodie and we were both blown away! Highly suggest. Not too much atmosphere but great quality. Will definitely visit next time we're downtown.
Bruce and his team know how to get the job done. It is Excellent every time. I have never been disappointed with a meal at river street deli.
Definitely the best sandwich shop in Chattanooga. I usually go on Fridays and get the Cuban sandwich. It is better than the ones I had in Little Havana, which seemed pretty authentic. My coworkers and I go and they get the Reuben, and they are never disappointed. Monday's are the Stromboli, and they are fantastic too. The owner is actually from NY, which explains those saying he tends to be "rude". He's never been rude to me, I think he's just got that classic NY demeanor. He'll recommend the special every time, which is usually what you should get, but if you go off the standard menu, I like the Salsalito turkey. My bill with a sandwich only is usually about $8-$9. Add a side and drink and it's more like $12. It's worth it to me though for real authentic NY style deli sandwiches, and less than what I'd pay at a sit down restaurant with tip included.
Lunch time today. To start I'm not sure I've tried so hard to find a place. Just me as after I did I'm awfully glad I persisted and made it. If you go look for the building that says "Hardware " in black letters. The entrance iss under a set of blue stairs. Order at one end pay and pickup at the other end. Clearly a lunch Hotspot so go early. By 12:15 people were looking for a place to sit.
I had the roast beef sandwich! Possibly the 2nd best sandwich I've ever eaten. The beef was mid rare and with arugula and gorgon zola cheese. Seriously delicious. I ate every morsel. The guy at the counter talk me into a small cup of soup. $2.00. Again. ..very very flavorful with some mozzarella shaved into a vegetable base soup. Seasoned bread squares for crackers.
$8.95 for the sandwich and total with a soda was 14.00.
This place is probably the best sandwich shop I've ever been to but also keep in mind I haven't been to much places. But in the Chattanooga and surrounding area, the best! My husband has been going for years and introduced it to me when we got married 6 years ago.
Best Deli in the World. Their Philly Reuben is the best sandwich in the world. The Cuban is also great. We go there all of the time.
I miss it. Due to surgery, haven't been able to bust Bruce's' chops ! Hidden gem of Chatt Town!
Great food. The food is great. All our sandwiches were great, the black bean soup was great, the price is great....... Now if someone would just throw some paint on the walls and clean the place up a little....
Great find, the food is tasty and fresh. Bruce, knows what his making. we will surely be back.
Great Food!. Chose this restaurant by the smell! Was walking around with my two kids in search of lunch and almost missed it because it's kinda tiny. Very much loved the muffaletta sandwich! It fell apart a little, but taste was spot on. It came toasted and piled high with very fresh tasting meat and this wonderful tapenade. My boyfriend had the turkey with sundried tomato and provolone sandwich and I didn't hear any complaining out of him either. I ordered 2 hot dogs for the kids but only one got eaten. My picky eater didn't care for it. The hot dogs looked like good high quality beef dogs, not sure if they were. My only disappointment was the cookie. They had giant cookies up by the register so I got the peanut butter with Reese's pieces and it just tasted try to me. I got my order to go so I can't vouch for the bathrooms, but overall impression was good. Will return!
Awesome sandwiches and broccoli soup. I liked the jerk turkey w bacon and pineapple chutney. Amazing chutney!
A real gem. River Street Deli is a real diamond when compared to most Southern delis. The city has made parking a real hassle (way to make it tough on local businesses) but it is worth the effort to eat here. Good selection of choices for every taste.
Other have mentioned the Stromboli, and it is wonderful, just not available every day. I often buy a whole one and take home to freeze and slice for appetizers with company over for dinner. Tastes like one from the Italian sections in northeast cities.
But the crown jewel here is the muffalata, cannot believe someone actually dissed this item but there is are many different tastes and opinions. I have eaten muffaltas all over Louisiana and the Gulf Coast and this is the best I have found. Everyone I have been with has raved about this sandwich. I was there one day and folks from Baton Rouge came in and laughed about getting this Louisiana specialty in Chattanooga; the owner encouraged them to try it and I supported him. Less than half way through the sandwich they commented to me that it was better than any version they had tried in their home state. They were blown away. Recommend it to anyone who hasn't tried it.
Great food and Stromboli nice amazing service will stop every time I am in Chattanooga.
Best lunch, best chef - great place. If you're looking for fancy and expensive, go find another place, but if you're into good value, delicious food, and a down home feeling, you've come to the right place. The River Street Deli is a hidden gem- a real find.
I've been to Chattanooga on business ten times in the past twelve years, each time for 5-10 days, and any time I'm not needed at a lunch conference at the client's place, this is my 'go to' lunch place. I don't bother going anywhere else for lunch anymore.
The food is consistently terrific. i've had the stromboli, the muffulleta, the reuben, the panini, the meat loaf, lots of salads............. .the list goes on. I've never been disappointed. Every time i go back there i feel like i discovered hidden treasure.
Bruce, the owner and chef, seems to know everybody in town and makes you feel like you found a home away from home. It's not fancy, but this place is a winner and hits the spot time and time again.
Dines at RSD for the first time today. The sandwiches were awesome and BIG! and service was way fast, even though it was crowded with the after church crowd and the visiting Head of the Hooch folks...will definitely return soon!
Real Deal. Its our regular place to eat for Sunday lunch. We have 2 kids and they enjoy it too. We have tried to break away to find something new for Sunday lunch, but yet to find anything to compare. The chef is always greeting, curtious and explains the specials. Something new daily. The regular meals frittata, mufallata (big easy central mkt style) and the reuban (omg) are the best I have ever tried. Good atmosphere, excellent food, friendly service and a taste of NY deli. If you havent eaten here, you are missing out. Its the best find in Chattanooga!
Epic Sandwiches. ...like the muffulleta, panko-breaded chicken, or the amazing vegetarian sandwich I had here once. They are delicious, and enormous, with fresh toppings and great bread. The soup is good too. Great prices for the amount of food you get. I usually get what's on special, and it's never been anything but good.
Fantastic!. Not much more to add besides what's been said. This place serves up great food in a no-nonsense setting, for a decent price. I always get whatever sandwich is on special. A friend told me the specials are often decided based on what they have "leftovers" of, but I've yet to be disappointed by one! My favorites are stromboli and grilled meatloaf sandwich. Staff may appear intimidating based on sheer tattoo count, but they're generally friendly.
Great place for friendly lunch. Stopped in while I was checking out downtown Chattanooga. Great service - even allowed me to try the special of the day, stromboli, that was unbelievable. Passed on it to have the 1/2 turkey and brie with a yummy, tangy honey mustard sauce with the artichoke salad.
Awesome!. I'm New Jersey born and raised and have learned my lesson about deli's down south that claim to be "New York" style. I am SO glad that I found this hidden treasure! The Reuben was absolutely delicious and I have told everyone in town! I just went last week and cannot wait to go back and try something new!
Top-notch deli.. Amidst many places in the South that don't understand what a deli is supposed to be, this place gets it. I try to make a stop through here any time I am in Chattanooga around lunch time. River Street's muffaletta is the best of two worlds: (1) the olive paste is right up there with any in the Big Easy, and (2) the meat holds up as well as NYC's best. Also give any of their fresh salads a try; the black eyed pea salad gets big ups from these taste buds.
Great food! Always busy. Wish they were open for supper
Best deli in Chattanooga.
This is a great New York deli that must have magically ended upon River St in Chattanooga instead of in down town New York. Everything here is authentic from the atmosphere to the food to the staff. A great variety of filling sandwiches and reasonable prices make this a great lunch spot.
Always take Bruce's Recommendation. A great deli with fantastic sandwiches, fresh salads, and awesome food. Run like any neighborhood deli you'd find in large cities, Chattanooga is lucky to have an innovative great chef like Bruce who creates hearty tasty treats for lunch and the special dinners on Friday and Saturday nights.
Stromboli and Fruttata that is out of this world. He features lunch specials and reaches that I always find to be a hit. Bruce expands great food in Chattanooga reaching to cuisines and styles from all over the world to create his dishes. Try it once you'll want to come back again. This place makes you feel good. The food and Bruce will put you in a better frame of mind and body
...he was glad that they didn’t have the brisket because he loved his panini so much.
