Visited on an afternoon in January 2018. We were a group of 4 and of course this isn't a sit down joint. So we just ordered a bunch of tacos and ate there in a corner. We had a bunch of hard shell tacos and I'd recommend checking them out.
Must Try:
Chicken Tikka Taco
Beef Brisket Taco
Best tacos ever!
I was so happy this place was right next door to our hotel. Shrimp n grits taco, chicken n waffle tacos, also great for breakfast!
Food:
Tried various kinds of tacos and absolutely loved them.
Highlights were the shrimp & falafel ones.
Delicious delicious.
Ambience:
Fun & busy joint. I adore how they’ve done their walls.
Service:
Self service is best bro.
Value for money:
Super chill on pockets !
Had heard a lot about this place, so we went and tried. Trust me, it’s a celebration in your mouth with every bite! The Chicken tikka masala taco was the winner for me. Be prepared for long queue as this is a place where everyone wants to eat!
Velvet Taco in Chicago is one of those new fangled taco joint that have sprung up selling tacos that are a little bit different, a little bit funky or as they describe themselves ‘Tacos without Borders’. I came along to check them out mainly as I had seem some pretty interesting and unexpected combinations such as ‘Spicy Tikka Chicken’, ‘Nashville Tofu’, and ‘Shrimp and Grits’ listed on their menu.
Good burgers hot dogs fries great Italian beef All around good eating place I would highly recommend if you are in Chicago it's a must place to eat
Wow. This place serves some amazing tacos.
We ordered almost one of each taco. The Buffalo chicken was great. The chicken Tikka taco was amazing. The best was the Panneer taco. Simply lip smacking. The fish tacos were just okay.
For taco lovers... It cant get better than this.
On first sight... It might not look that impressive... But as soon as that first bite goes in.... :) ... I bet you will fall in love with the delicacy !!!
This joint is open till late hours in night making it more convineant for food lovers.
Apart from food.... I loved the way they serve tacos.. the crockery.
Some places connect with your soul and touch you like no other place ever has. Velvet Taco is one such place. It's amazing in so many levels. On a Saturday night, which also happened to be the night of St Patrick's Day celebrations, we headed here for dinner. It was crowded and the queue to place your order was really long. They have an option of online orders which would work much better in a situation like this. I can see it being crowded on a regular day too, I see why.
It's a really hip place with inventive interiors, communal tables and wall arts. They have a two floor seating and the second floor is a little less noisy as the orders are placed in the first floor. They serve delicious tacos, not necessarily the most authentic ones. That's what worked for me the most! The menu is categorized based on the meat that goes in the making of tacos.
We ordered Fried Paneer, Nashville Hot Tofu and Falafel Tacos. I also got a Frozen Margarita. The tacos were delicious, very innovative flavors. For my favorites list, I am still deciding between Paneer and Tofu tacos, but I definitely feel that Tofu Taco won me over. Falafel was my least favorite and I may not order that again. It was served on a Lettuce Wrap unlike the other two that were served on Flour Tortilla.
The place is reasonably priced. This is definitely one of those places I would take my friends to when they come visit me! I most definitely recommend!
Tacos with a twist, pretty much.
Not your traditional contemporary taco place, this one is known for jazzing up their fried pockets with beloved stuffings which aren't what you expect from a standard taco joint.
Velvet Taco's Chicago location is two hardwood floors of long communal tables, exposed brick, and splashes of colour, where food and beverage will be available from the morning until the wee hours.
Five sections of tacos, arranged by type of meat, vegetarian or egg are numbered on the menu and include fried paneer, fish and chips, Cuban pig and tikka chicken. Sides and whole rotisserie chickens are also available.
Margaritas, craft beer, and a variety of iced teas are there to drink.
I loved my indianised Mexican juicy chicken tikka taco with spicy, buttery tomato sauce, cilantro-flecked basmati rice and yogurt raita, almost had me nostalgic for delhi streetfood.
A flaky fried cod taco smeared with pungent curry, malted fries and frilly pea tendrils was like English pub-worthy fish and chips on a tortilla.
Pungent and crisp buffalo sauce chicken tacos dotted with blue cheese is everything heavenly in one bite.
Fried paneer taco was among my top favourites with tomato chutney, Thai basil tikka sauce and finely kissed with a tart mild raita. More scrumptious than it can ever sound in words.
The Red Velvet Cake is certainly the best I have ever eaten. Fuss free, gorgeous huge piece of cake, Slice through the pristine velvety white icing to reveal the crimson sponge hiding inside. OMG, indeed.
Calorie Dodgers needn't bother.
Fusion cooking is usually a recipe for confusion, but at Velvet Taco there is a clear well-executed idea of from-scratch melting pot cooking that will swoon you with gorgeous pairings and flavours that will pull you back here, time and again.
Cost/ person : $7
Will I visit again? Yes.

When Im missing my home in Texas then this is a great place to go and taste some delicious taco and wash it all down with a superb margarita, or two. The prices here are great, especially for this neighborhood. I love the tater tots with the friend egg plopped on top, such comfort food. Love that they offer a variety of tacos as I prefer the flour ones but family members prefer corn versions. Impressed to see they offer gluten free and have dishes that work for a paleo diet. Easy to order your food at the counter, you get a number and then the food is delivered to your table. Hours are also good for a late night snack on the way home.
Maybe it’s 2 AM and after several rounds of cocktails, your stomach is growling. Or perhaps date night at a fancy but overpriced River North restaurant didn’t fill you up. Not to worry, the Texas transplant, Velvet Taco, saves the night. They’re open til at least midnight each night, and until 4 AM on Fridays and Saturdays.
Velvet Taco is a fun place to go with friends! There are lots of yummy, inventive choices, and great drinks to choose from!
My favorite tacos are the seafood ones. The pulled pork one is a little bit dry, but the pork belly one is exactly what a Chicago dog needs: pick belly. People say these tacos are expensive, but they are actually much larger than you'd expect. If you eat like a normal person, you'll probably only want to order 2 or 3 of them.
The sides are also delicious (elotes and tater tots alike) so order away!
After discovering this place in Dallas, we HAD to come back while in Chicago!
We loved their tacos in Dallas and they were just as good in Chicago. They have different and unique flavors like Chicken BLT, Falafel, Burgers, Fried Oyster, Breakfast, and my husband's favorite: Crisp Chicken Tikki Masala!
They also have a side that is one of our favorites: Crisp Tater Tots with cheese and a local, fried egg!
Another perk is their wide range of tortillas including flour, corn, blue corn, and our favorite (as it is gluten-free AND paleo): lettuce wraps.
We were just visiting the city and always noticed how packed this place was and decided to try it for our last dinner here.. And oh em gee. It was so delicious. We ordered majority of the items on the menu minus the vegetarian items. One of the top things we've enjoyed while visiting Chicago. Their hot sauce was so delicious as well!! They make everything fresh! And portions are very generous. I could barely finish the 3rd taco I ordered.
It makes me crazy when i see people agonizing over which taco to try! Just DO IT! They're all good to great. Get at least two different ones. Three of you're starving. Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives isn't far down the road for these hipsters.
Awesome!. This place rocks! Not a Mexican taco at all; very gourmet. The corn and tots are a must. I can see myself eating here for lunch or after a night out to soak up some adult beverages.
Velvet Taco is such a laid-back, super casual spot. Every taco I've tried here has been nothing short of incredible. And the added bonus? They serve some great cocktails too! An all-around fantastic place for a chill place for lunch or dinner.
A sweet taco spot it's bigger than you think dinr forget about the upstairs, and I personally loved the salmon taco but I don't think you can get a bad taco here. Carlita was super nice and informative.

Best taco ever had in my life ! Loved it
The mushroom and pulled pork were magic. Size are good probably not enough for it is so good. The venue is very simple and food comes quite fast. Highly recommend the cauliflower. So good we had to order more ! Took recipes home for enjoying
Wow! My 1st time at a Velvet Tacos. Very good fusion & I really liked what they have done with tacos. But I have had better tacos. I loved the Thai curry queso with blue corn chips. Mediterranean Mushroom taco is very good. Not enough seating arrangement. Gets really crowded in the evenings.
Delicious specialty tacos. Velvet Taco was recommended to me so I gave it a try. This is Tex Mex type of taco with soft shells and interesting combinations. I had the tikka and brisket versions and enjoyed them both. The Tikka has a nice creamy and slightly spicy Tikka sauce that goes extremely well in taco form. The brisket was tender and well seasoned if maybe slightly salty, but that's personal preference. The others I was with got the pulled pork taco and Korean friend rice version and they enjoyed it. The space is very small for such a popular place and the seating is bench style. To go is probably the best option or visit during a non meal time frame. The red velvet cake is delicious. A final note, there is a lot of sauce on the tacos.
So so good! Every taco we got was amazing. Stopped in for lunch and we were very impressed with the variety of the menu. Tacos are affordable $5 ish each and LOADED up. Two tacos per person was filling. Margs are tasty, $9 for ~12oz. I wish this location had more seating on the main floor. We had a stroller and felt in the way most of the time. Expect a mess when eating, but honestly we didn't care it was so delish!
Tried 4 tacos (Mexican Cali shrimp, grilled salmon, Kobe Smash, rotisserie chicken) and all were either too sweet or salty but did like beef Kobe Smash burger. Guacamole and queso dips were good. Upstairs dining was even hotter than downstairs. No air conditioning. 1 Unisex restroom upstairs.
Fast and friendly service. I really like the creativity and variety of options. I really enjoyed the brisket and chicken rotisserie tacos. The fried shrimp taco had too much mayo on it for my liking. Their red velvet cake is delicious and moist.
Good Velvet Taco location in Chicago. We tried their special Farm taco which was good, but would stick with the Tikka. Guacamole and Elote were great as usual.
Most tacos can be done gluten free as long as you get a corn tortilla.
Absolutely love this place! You can't go wrong with the blackened shrimp tacos and the grilled pineapple guac is amazing. Very kind staff and cute place to eat with family and friends.
