My husband and I love searching for new Italian beef sandwich shops to try when we are in town, so of course we had to try it! Absolutely one of the best beefs we have had. Just the right amount of hot and sweet, and generously dipped too. Friendly folks running the shop that add to the cozy mom and pops atmosphere. Definitely will return!
Excellent food and service! Best meat sandwich anywhere and awesome atmosphere!
This is a "must visit" place whenever I come back home to Chicago. Great beefs. Great fries.
I Been Coming to Mr Beef on Orleans for many many years 16 to be exact to me it was the best beef ever and to me it still is the best in Chicago im so glad i live in the same city with mr beef cause i would go crazy if I didn't.
We came from NC to try this place!
The food was pretty good but nothing super crazy. The fries and cannolis are amazing. The beef was good but I wish it was more marinated.
We loved the look of the place but sanitary wise it wasn’t ideal. The dining room had nothing to clean the tables with after you eat. Crumbs and food are left from previous people for you to clean which was kind of annoying. Bathrooms aren’t available so make sure you bring wet wipes to clean your hands well!
The Italian beef sandwich is really good and flavorful. However, the sausage sandwich really isn’t great. They give you a ton of fries if you order them, and the fries were great too. The staff were friendly and the service was really quick. They have a big seating area on the left side of the restaurant too. I would go back here for the Italian beef sandwich. If you’re a fan of The Bear, it’s worth coming here since the restaurant is identical to the one in the show.
With all the hoopla surrounding this restaurant being attached to the FX series, The Bear, it’s seen a bit of an uptick in popularity. And that’s a good thing, because the place is a Chicago institution. It’s got one of the best Italian beef sandwiches in the city. It’s flavorful and spot on. Make sure to get it with peppers and dipped! However, the rest of the food is a little on the mediocre side. But you are going to Mr. Beef for a burger. The atmosphere is fun, with lots of photos of famous people, though the space could use a bit of an update, as it is getting dingy. The service is impeccable, the staff is attentive and pleasant, and the Italian beef is top notch. I wouldn’t stray from that item much, but this solace is well worth a visit.
Was recommended to come here not because of the show, but because this place is a staple in Chicago. That Italian beef sweet and hot is tasty! And the fries are a must. Quick service, friendly people. No bathroom means you will need a stack of napkins to get your hands clean after eating that juicy sandwich.
Love this place so much my fave in Chicago me and my family felt very welcome and comfortable.
The sandwich is very juice make sure to grab tons of napkins. It’s no bathrooms so washing hands are only available with wet wipes. It’s wasn’t a big deal for us ask for fries too you will not regretted it!
No trip to Chicago is complete without a visit to Mr. Beef. Also wanted to see how it compares to the show. Lived up to all expectations. The food was a wonderful messy burst of beef. Just roll up your sleeves and dig in. Shout out to the staff, while we were there a staff member came up to a little kid from another party with a magic dollar for the claw machine. They kept feeding the machine until the kid got one. Very sweet.
NO PUBLIC RESTROOMS
I enjoyed the Italian beef sandwich and cheese fries, but service is kind of slow, the atmosphere is nothing to write home about and there are no public restrooms.
The Italian beef is great and certainly above average, but there are other places in the area that have better Italian beef sandwiches. It seems like they dipped my sandwich without me asking for it, so maybe that is the default here. A dipped sandwich tastes great, but when I opened it in the dining room, juices spilled out of the wrapping all over the table. The giardinera was nice and crunchy, but it wasn't spicy in comparison to other places and didn't really seem to taste like anything. The cheese fries were great, plentiful and they provide you with a generous amount of cheese.
There is a dining room in the side room with one long communal table and since there is no music playing in the restaurant and a bunch of strangers are sitting at a table together no one was really talking and the room was silent which was awkward.
It'd be great if they could modernize their restaurant and add some restrooms and then I might be able to recommend it to other people.
Made the pilgrimage here after seeing The Bear.
The sandwich was of course, melt in your mouth. I think next time, I'll get it with peppers.
We also go the Mozzarella Sticks which were dropped in the frier as we ordered them, so they had a great cheese pull.
Service was fine.
The atmosphere is a little odd. The place hasn't been updated in years. Lots of signed pictures of famous people on the walls.
Big fan of the tv series “the bear”. Had a work trip in Chicago so I had to come ! I was so excited to come and it’s a pleasant surprise, the owner Christopher is here and it was quite quiet, and we ended up chatting a lot and it was a great experience, such a character! I had the Italian beef sandwich and it tastes so good!
Like many, heard about this place from The Bear, but if you haven't, don't let that stop you. Got an Italian beef hot (peppers) and juicy (dunked in juice). Woah, so flavorful and tender! It's juicy and messy, and though I wasn't hungry, demolished it quickly. It's warm inside where you order, but they have a small dining room with AC. Went on a Tuesday around 1030am and wasn't busy. Wish I had a few more days to try some of their other stuff. Got a second beef to go for a snack later in the day. Bring cash.
