Excellent Italian sandwich. Bread is toasty on the outside, but soft enough for a good chew on each bite. Distribution of veggies, meats, and cheeses are well balanced and fresh. Most Italian subs tend to err on the side of being overly seasoned or salty due to the usual cast of ingredients, but Bari did a fine job in balancing the flavors and saltiness in this sandwich. Sandwich was efficiently packed, and the price point is reasonable ($9.75 + tax for a 9" sub at the time of this review). For its excellent quality and value, I consider this a must-eat item whenever one is in Chicago.
My favorite sandwich in chicago. It’s hefty and you have to be in the mood for something like this, but the Focacia from Bari is like no other.
Here’s my order:
Turkey
Cheddar cheese
Lettuce, tomato, onion, Pickles
Mayo / Mustard
Hot Giardiniera ( a must if you like spicy).
Solid - no frills - Italian beef sandwich. The 9inch is their smallest size and it’s huge. You can easily split it with another person. No seating.
Tip: Be sure to eat it right away. The bread can get soggy in minutes.
This small little Italian grocery store/deli offers some of the best sandwiches. I’ve been coming here for several years now for lunch and I still haven’t tried everything. The bread is great and they make one hell of a sandwich. Usually the place is packed for lunchtime orders so ordering ahead of time is a good idea. The grocery store has an assortment of hard to get Italian items. The walls are lined with Chicago sports memorabilia and pictures of famous guest and visitors to the store. The prices of a 12” deli sandwich average around $12. Highly recommend this establishment. It’s my go to when in the neighborhood.
Easily the best Italian grocery store deli in the city. Get the Italian you won’t be upset. They have home made sides and the deli is amazing. Anything you need pastas imported snacks and goods, even their frozen pizzas are amazing.
I was visiting Chicago and made a point to find a great Italian beef sandwich. Found this place randomly and asked the guy at the counter to make me one the way he likes it. Best sandwich ever! And such a nice little authentic spot! Really made my day.
Fast, pleasant and efficient service. I ordered the 12" Italian Sub. It was tasty and quite large, but $13.50 (I added red peppers and Gardiner) for a sub sandwich seems a bit much.
Got my first sub here because a friend recommended it and would stop talking about it! Now I won’t stop talking about it, I got a Italian Beef Sub. I was full with have of the 9” but made a sacrifice and ate the entire thing! MUST TRY! Will definitely be coming back for more. Beef tasted great and fresh
I go out of my way to alway stop here when I'm in town. Tiny shop but fantastic subs. You'll also find great homemade giardiniera and other jarred items stocked on their shelves. Plus grab some great Italian dishes from the refrigerated section like a quart of delicious escarole and beans.
Must try sandwich shop in Chicago. Really enjoyed the vibe and quick service. Gives you that authentic vibe as soon as you step in. Food was phenomenal. They buy their bread homemade from the bakery next store.
Use to live 2 blocks away from Bari Foods and quickly it became one of my favorite places. Seriously the best Italian subs I've ever found in Chicago. I go every time I visit. Not a bad item on the menu. Highly recommend!

It’s a true Italian deli where you walk in past register check out and a mini grocery store before you can order a sub. This is the type of place of Tony Soprano would hang out at.
It's my go to sub place in Chicago! I buy them for all my Sox tailgates.
ATTN ALL VEGETARIANS! All I can say is WOW. I am a very picky vegetarian who doesn't like cross contamination and Bari Foods went above and beyond to make sure that didn't happen. Instead of using the slicing machine that they use for meat and cheese, they used a clean knife to personally cut the cheese for my sandwich. They placed paper on the food prep surface and washed their hands before preparing my sandwich. All requests that I made that they accomodated with no questions asked. They even allowed me to build my own sandwich that wasn't even on the menu! Normally restaurants tell me no and refuse my service because they don't want to go the extra mile but not this one. I can't thank Bari Foods enough for my sandwich. Thank you for making this experience an amazing one. Eating out can be difficult/ stressful as a vegetarian at non vegetarian restaurants but you all made it a breeze. Thank you thank you thank you!
Be warned if you order their sandwich on a focaccia it’s going to be MASSIVE but delicious!! If you go here you must try one of their desserts. The raspberry chocolate cookie was 10/10 I would go there just for a box of desserts. Definitely give this place a shot, it won’t disappoint.
Barry foods, deli, butcher shop is one of the best food store to shop. They have incredible Italian subs, meatball sandwiches, Italian sausage, Italian beef, a huge assortment of olives, cheese, and Italian sausage from the butcher is the best in Chicago.
Bari foods is a gem we found while visiting Chicago. It's a grocery store and butcher, but they make fresh sandwiches as well. We tried their cold sandwiches. They were fantastic. The bread was great quality, and their meat and cheeses were fantastic quality. I also bought some of their house made giardiniera to take home with me. We tried their Italian, American, and Eggplant Parm sandwiches. They were excellent.
Bari foods is a legend. While they are very popular for their subs, the home made barese sausage is the star. Get yourself some barese sausage and two it on the grill. It's like no other sausage in chicago. Not to be missed is their jars of giardiniera to take home.
Solid sub sandwiches!! Friend recommended I try this deli and sub shop. They were churning and burning in there. They made the subs fast which was impressive! There was a line but went super quick! I tried the Italian sub and Tuna Sub.
