We had a great experience. They were gracious to accommodate us without a reservation. The food was amazing, heirloom tomato salad, and pork belly appetizer to start. Then had shrimp and grits, shrimp was fresh, local and cooked perfectly. The pork chop with cauliflower mash and green beans was such a treat. Server was Kyle, great server, very warm, and welcoming. He was very knowledgeable regarding the menu and the beer list, he recommended three excellent local brews which we really enjoyed. Would definitely recommend this place.
The food is absolutely amazing!! My husband and I started off with the scallops... perfect. They were SO good. I had the bone in pork chop, literally the best pork chop ever. My husband tried it and wanted to switch plates lol. We talked about that dinner for about 3 days to follow. We will definitely be going back. Soon! HIGHLY recommend. Very nice business casual place to have a wonderful dinner for any occasion.
Great food, and great service! The Mahi Mahi was to die for. Would definitely recommend!
Brunch was delicious. The best grits I’ve had at a restaurant. Also, loved the crab cakes. Atmosphere was great. Not too pricy for a brunch. Highly recommend.
Aj had the Mahi and I had a thick bone-in pork chop. Both were cooked to perfection! Eric was our server and he was very friendly.
Excellent food, service and ambiance! We love to eat there whenever we are in Columbia! Food is always fresh and cooked to perfection! The wait staff are friendly and knowledgeable about the menu items! We love Motor Supply!
The fish and grits were amazing, the fish was perfectly cooked and the bloody Mary’s hit the spot. Always a winner for southern Sunday brunch!!
Eddie and his staff are super and the food is always five star!
I love the atmosphere, the service, and the changing menu! The food is amazing and locally sourced. I am definitely a long term customer.

Delicious! I cannot express effectively how delicious our meal was. What a gem. From the first bite to the last, everything was prepared perfectly. Thank you for a delightful dining experience.
Wife had set a Va ham and cheese sandwich with vinaigrette dressing. I had a white bean & kale soup.
Both were very good lunches. Wife vanilla bean creme brûlée desert.
Heavenly!
We would come back. They change menus every day.
Motor Supply Company
If you are a fan of Thomas Keller and like the French Laundry or Per Se, if you have enjoyed the Inn at Little Washington, or Binkley’s in Cave Creek, Arizona, you will be pleasantly surprised and enjoy your meal at Motor Supply Company in Columbia, South Carolina.
I had very modest expectations when my wife and I first dined with Chef Wesley Fulmer and Stephanie Heikila, the manager. After reading other reviews on line I was not expecting much. I don’t know where those other reviewers who were disappointed ate, but it was not the Motor Supply we enjoyed two nights in a row while attending the Masters.
The menu changes daily and features fresh local products. The creative use of local greens and seafood is what attracted us. On the first night my wife had a North Carolina sheepshead (much like a grouper) and I had the shrimp and grits. The preparation and plating were perfect. The fish was perfectly done. The sauces, like the tomato based sauce for the shrimp were subtle and delightful. The second night we had an appetizer of seared scallops with a small piece of smoked lamb bacon. I’d drive here again from Virginia for this appetizer alone. It was one of the best things either of us have eaten and we are foodies that have been enjoying fine dining and cooling for many decades. My wife had the swordfish entre and I had the duck. I have never had better duck – and I love duck. The serving is a piece of perfectly done (rare) duck breast and a crispy duck leg. We had dessert (which we don’t frequently do) and it , too was superb. Try the pudding with the bourbon cherries (described as a cake on the menu – but really a traditional pudding).
The service and wait staff was outstanding – knowledgeable about the ever changing menu, eager to please, but not hovering.
The food here is outstanding – it is five start dining in a friendly bar and grill setting instead of the white tablecloths you might expect in the more traditional five star restaurant. The value of the meal was outstanding. Maybe it is because of the location, but I would expect to pay three or four times as much for a meal of this quality.
If you have enjoyed true five star dining, you won’t be disappointed at Motor Supply.
Great restaurant!. Great restaurant, great food! Awesome waitstaff!
Skeptical when friends recommend a 'great' restaurant in Columbia. As a Charlestonian, I am fortunate to have many choices for great food. Motor Supply Co is one of my new favorites. Fresh, local SC ingredients served simply. Great flavor combinations. Can't wait to come back. Housemade charcuterie was excellent. Everything was excellent. Go!
Can't go wrong here. I only wish I could dine here more often
Very good. A colleague and I took out clients to Motor Supply Company and we had a great meal. Two of us got steak, one got tilefish, and another got pork chops; everyone enjoyed their meal. We sat in the outside section and the weather was awesome. The place has good service and great food, will definitely go back.
Wow!. Oh my goodness, this place was amazing! We found it on urban spoon and decided to give it a try, as it is apparently "the happening place" In Columbia. We chose wisely. Upon entering I asked for a table for two and was greeted with "do you have a reservation?". This had me concerned, but she also told me they had a full service bar which was great, as that's a place that I'm pretty comfortable in. So cutting to the chase, the service was excellent, letting me sample a couple beers before ordering. Then once settled in with a tasty ale, we started with the mussels steamed in white wine, which were absolutely divine. Almost as good as my own, but seasoned with different herbs than I'm used to. Maybe lemon grass and a touch of rosemary?? Again, quite tasty. Then had the NY strip with mashed taters and a bourbon glaze. Incredible!! It was all I could do to keep from lifting the plate and licking it clean.
So I've got two more months of visiting Columbia, and now that I've discovered this place, I'll be back for multiple visits EACH trip. So satisfied. So satisfied.
Noisy patio.... I would have rated this experience higher except for two things: First, we made reservations, but did not request outdoor seating. That would have been fine except for the loud base beat of either cars in the parking lot or a nearby club that could be heard loudly thumping through most of dinner.
Secondly, our waiter was not very attentive. He had tables inside and out and seemed stretched thin (it was a Thursday.)
Having said those things, the food is excellent and I would go back, but with more knowledge of where to sit.
We shared the charcuterie plate; all was tasty, but it would have been nice if the waiter had pointed out what everything on the plate was. My husband had the steak (one of the best executed we have had out in a long time) and I thoroughly enjoyed the soft shell crab. The wine by the glass selection is excellent, so ordering a bottle is not necessary if you do not wish to and the lemon tart that we had for dessert was a perfect palate cleanser.
Wonderful rotating menu. Started with the muscles in a creamy tomato sauce which was quite scrumptious. For dinner I had the fish of the day with a blanc cream & shallot caper sauce over rice that was phenomenal. The creme brûlée was disappointing, as I don't believe they used real vanilla bean, but other than that the entire night was fabulous. Excellent wine list & friendly service.
Enjoyed. Pricey place but very tasty. I had the NY Strip. It was cooked perfectly and veggies/mashed potatoes and duck gravy was spot on. Very good wine selection as well. Service was perfect and the atmosphere nice. Worth a try.
Great service, unique food and nice atmosphere. Had the mussels and fried lobster...simply great! We will return.
The service is top notch, the atmosphere is really cool, and josh is the best bartender in town. Be sure to
Try the duck for dinner, and make
Sure to have brunch there.
Always enjoy this place particularly like the outside patio portion. Food is original usually very fresh and services excellent. Parking can be a problem they have valet service.
This is the Best of Columbia!. If I could afford it, I would eat here every week, or maybe even daily. Great creativity in the kitchen! Excellent service! Constantly varied and eclectic menu! We are very fortunate to have a restaurant like this in Columbia.
Quality Costs More. If you want to eat cheap, go elsewhere. If you want to dine, sit back and enjoy the ride. Charcuterie and cheese board apps were great, Entrees - porterhouse pork chop and a steak - were excellent. No room for dessert. Service was very good and our server was knowledgeable about the menu. IMHO: MSC's food is at the level to which MoMo's aspires, fails to hit, but overcharges you for anyhow. MSC delivers quality ingredients, nicely prepared and presented, with some imagination behind the menu. They merit the prices they charge and I do not resent the bill when it appears.
One of Columbia's Originals. I've been going to Motor Supply since it opened. Do I miss the good ol' days of Raymond and Cassandra? Yes, very much. The chefs and menus have changed over the years since they left, but Motor has remained consistently good and a great social spot. Had lunch there today with mom. Both had salads: mine was homemade bacon lardons, ciabatta croutons, tomato and homemade blue cheese dressing. Simple and very well executed. Mom had beautifully grilled shrimp with roasted squash and zucchini with a fresh vinaigrette. The menu does change daily, so it's possible to encounter a dish that just isn't your cup of tea. But there are lots of choices each day. Beautiful art glass on display right now. Motor Supply has already stood the test of time with Columbia; it's a classic fixture on our dining scene.
Great Atmosphere and Even Better Food. I am absolutely in love with Motor Supply Co Bistro. My boyfriend's parents suggested this restaurant to us for an anniversary dinner. The food is exquisite. The restaurant is in a gallery setting with art on the walls, modern track-lighting, candles, and an air of eclectic extravagance. I ordered shrimp over rice with caramelized onions and tomato bisque soup, I have never tasted shrimp as fresh as this before. 2 entrées and an appetizer was $40. Great place, Great food, Great Service. I went a year ago and I'm about to go again next week for our 2 year anniversary.
Great value, not high priced.. This was by far my best dinning experience in Columbia, by far. Our server could answer all of our questions, she knew he wine menu very well, exceptional detail all around. Four of us shared every appetizer on the menu, order our own main dish, and shared two bottles of wine (Louis Latour Pinot Noir) The charcuterie plate was my standout for the apps. Homemade seeded mustard, I detected maybe a little horse radish and some honey, house made pickles, a mousse pate' and country pate', great mix of both duck and cochon.
The standout for the main dishes were the soft crab and the duck. The soft shell crab was just fried, not too heavy, and the duck was perfect, tender meat, crispy skin..divine.
Our bill ran just a bit over $50/person. I would never consider this high priced. Ruth's Chris will run you more than that per person without wine. MSC is moderately priced, but a great value for what you pay. I must recommend this joint. Service and food combined for an absolutely great experience.
Pricey, But Worth It.... MSC is a bit on the pricier side so we only go for very special occasions, but the food is excellent and the service is superb. The portions are not huge, but definitely a great place.
Great Place. My wife and I dropped in one night to have some to talk. We sat at the bar and had a glass of wine and sampled some of the wonderful appetizers. The restaurant was packed, but the staff was willing to chat about any questions we had about the menu. There is not another place like this one in Columbia.
Enjoyed it.... Will be back. I really liked going here for dinner the other night. We did not make reservations but were treated like they were made 2 weeks ago. The daily hand written menus are a real nice touch that both my wife and I enjoyed. The atmosphere is dark and romantic while it still can accompany parties of any size. The pork loin that I had was simply amazing. I could not stop talking about it the entire evening. We did not stay for desert however, we went to Nonnah's Desert Shop not even a block away. Everything clicks for the this place Food, Atmosphere, and wonderful Service.
Pork Poterhouse. We Had Dinner there last night and the service and food were superb. It is hard to rate a particular dish as the menu is handwritten and new daily. We all loved the polenta appetizer and the pork porter house was superb. Victoria had the lamb chops and they were perfect! Pricey and worth it!!!!
Fabulous evening. We've been one time and have been wanting to go back but are waiting until the menu (changed twice a day depending upon what's freshest and most organic, etc) has something irresistible on it again. We check online just before deciding where to go. Service is terrific. Atmosphere nice. Our meal was so wonderful I sent out a review to all our out of town friends so they'd want to come for a visit! Their menu is unusual - we started with a duck appetizer that was over a potato cake and to die for. My husband had steak and I had fish - can't remember what they were called but both were fabulous.
Great food and good service.
Great food and great atmosphere! I had the duck and it was fantastic for a little place on the Vista. I love that the menu changes, keeps you on your culinary toes.
Really good, unusual restaurant. The food is general excellent - but they change the menu a LOT, so you're not always sure what you're going to get. They've got a great terrace you can sit out on. The best meals I've had there are Sunday Brunch (try the grits)
Quaint Place. This restauarant is amazing. The menu changes daily as the chef customizes it to the local groceries purchased. The prices are moderate, and they have a great selection of wines.
Varied menu - great food. I have yet to have a bad meal at Motor Supply Company. Their menu changes daily, though some items are regulars like the cheese plate, and a couple different types of steak. They will generally have at least one vegetarian entree option, and a couple veg app options, as well as a collection of salads. Great wine list and great desserts.
With a different menu every single night depending on what is in season and chef’s preference, we could only view the menu just before departing. Even with the boys in tow, we were treated with nothing but courteous and helpful staff, and the meal was fabulous. After our time in France I often times think I might have become too picky for my own good, but this place left me satisfied and f
Columbia area foodies will tell you that absolutely must go to Motor. By Motor, they mean Motor Supply Company Bistro, Columbia, South Carolina's shining star of culinary awesomeness. For more than twenty years, the place has been kicking out amazing food. Much like Soby's in Greenville, the restaurant set a standard for the culinary scene in Columbia, and was one of the first restaurants in the now, very cool, Vista area of downtown. Let me tell you. This restaurant doesn't play. They are SERIOUS about some food. Almost everything on your plate is house made. They make their own stocks for sauces, they butcher and smoke their own meet, make their own charcuterie (sausages and the such ), pickles, mustards... they are event venturing over into house made beverages, making their own ginger beer and soon, their own sodas. And what they can't make inhouse, they locally source, reaching out to area farmers like the folks at City Roots , Trail Ridge , Wil-Moore , Doko Farm , Carolina
It was almost like eating a hashbrown risotto. They were awesome. The crab cakes were perfectly cooked. They definitely were spot on with the crab to breading ratio too. Read: almost all crab, very little breading. The eggs were just perfectly poached so that the yolk ran a bit when I cut into it, but net enough to make a huge mess. The hollandaise sauce? Divine. Wonderful flavor that accentuated the flavor of the eggs and the crab cakes. And, of course, the fruit was juicy and very very fresh.
If the house-made charcuterie served at the Making Bacon workshop was any indication of Chef Tim Peters’ meat curing /preparing skills, what would meat entrees be like at a full-on meal?
