Small hidden gem in Costa Mesa. It is almost impossible to get a reservation here but I was fortunate to make a second trip here for business purposes. Ingredients are obviously very fresha and the courses are well timed. I ended up feeling pretty full by the end of the course. Omakese is pricey compared to other spots and, truth be the told, I'm not sure if I would come back (if I were able to get a reservation) to dine on my own dime but I would recommend trying it atleast once. Cheers.
Hana Re is located behind an entirely unassuming door in The LAB Anti-Mall in Costa Mesa. Upon entering the space you are presented with an intimate dining area, with but a few tables and a chef's counter. We had reserved our seats at the chef's counter.
The series of courses that were then delivered were all delicately created and beautifully tasting. At Hana Re, an omakase is served and on our particular night there were ten courses. Each course was incredible and there was definitely no shortage of food.
I have the pleasure to report that I was surprised and got to experience new foods and combinations that I have never had before. The food was of the highest quality and the service impeccable. It was a pleasure to talk with the chef after the meal and I hope to return soon.
We were looking for an Omakase place in Orange County since we moved here few months ago. We’ve been to multiple Omakase places - tokyo, sf, new york…
This place is authentic and has phenomenal taste! Every dish had a very delicate taste, bringing out the ingredient’s original flavor. We cannot identify a single course that didn’t meet our expectations, they all rather exceeded it. Ambiance is very cozy…. almost like a mom & pop place, but with a high price tag. We would love to come here as a regular.
One complaint would be their outside bathroom shared with multiple restaurants nearby.
If I could give this place ten stars I would. Absolutely life changing sushi. Service is topnotch! We did the omakase ten course menu and sat at the bar. It is absolutely worth the reservation wait. We celebrated my birthday late just so we could eat here. Restaurant only seats maybe 16-20. The quality of food is phenomenal. Even the miso soup is mind-blowing! If you like sushi and amazing service, you must try this at some point. Cannot say enough great things about it. We will definitely be back.
Was here to celebrate a birthday while on summer break in LA and had a wonderful time. The sushi was fresh and creative. We sat at a table rather than the bar and the service was great. Had the omakase menu. Amazed.
A very unique experience. I got to try a lot of Japanese dishes that I’ve never tried before. I really enjoyed the wagyu steak, sweet shrimp, crab, sashimi, and eel dishes. I highly recommend this excellent dining experience.
Upscale omakase sushi restaurant in Costa Mesa (Orange County, CA). The dishes taste and look incredible, thanks to the high quality ingredients and the accurate preparation. Even the plates, bowls, cups and utensils match the style and contribute to appreciate the experience. The service is just as good.
This place was absolutely wonderful. I'll have to come back and upload some photos but everything about this place (minus the parking and outside bathroom) was perfect. It's a fairly small place giving it a very intimate feel.
I had ordered the omakase and the chef was kind enough to ask of any dietary restrictions and preferences! I hate green onions and I've heard other customers say no pork, etc. The food was absolutely amazing and I could not be happier with my meal.
The service was outstanding. The entire staff including the chef was very attentive and friendly.
For those interested in the omakase it was 7 appetizers before the main dish (nigiris) as well as dessert. I would also recommend having reservations.
Some dishes we had were A5 waygu beef, grilled barracuda on seared fois gras, live shrimp, and almond panna cotta.
I'll definitely be coming back here.
Update: 4 years later and it's still my favorite place.
Uh-mazing. This place has a Michelin star. Download the Michelin app and read all about it. Beautiful food and incredibly delicious - the highest quality ingredients. All I can say is wow, would go again in a heartbeat. A true food experience. Not sure there's better authentic Japanese food in all of L.A.
Hanare is one of two restaurants in Orange County that was awarded a Michelin star, and I got the chance to go for dinner today.
The booking process took a long time. There are literally only two seats at the bar, so I had to get a spot that someone canceled on.
I arrived at the Lab early, so I walked around a bit. The restaurant is fairy hidden, in the corner of a building with very little signage.
The door was closed at 5pm, and I didn’t even know if they were open. But I opened the door and got seated at the very small bar.
They only have two seats available now due to covid restrictions, but they said that normally they are able to fit 10 people at the bar, which is more than I would have thought could fit.
The arrangement is actually very nice. There is a water glass with a coaster, a small cloth napkin, a nice paper drink menu, and a set of chopsticks and spoon.
The first way to tell that this is a nice restaurant that really cares about their presentation is their chopsticks. I have never seen these types of chopsticks before. They are length wise symmetric, but not rotationally. One side is thicker than the other, and they are rectangular in cross section, with a round taper on each end. They are pretty unique, and area already separated with no splinters.
I got seated as the only person in the restaurant right when they started dinner service, but not too long after food started coming out.
The first half was small dishes from the kitchen with a little bit of prep from the chef. Then the second half was nigiri. All of the dishes were interesting, but I preferred to focus on enjoying the experience rather than trying to write about each food and write tasting notes.
Loved the place and best Omakase in LA!
It took a bit of time to get reserved for me and my friend, as my friend has already been here couple times. He strongly recommended Hana Re.
This is where you get top quality Omakase, great service, and excellent atmosphere.
It was a joy to watch chef flawlessly prepare every nigiri and appetizers, the waitress(chef's wife) would notice quickly when your beer is low and pour it for you, teas will be replaced with hot teas before you even notice it, and empty dishes will be cleared out in a very controlled timely manner.
The ingredients are exceptionally fresh, creative appetizer courses followed by skilled sashimi flavoring, I had a big smile on my face when I put that wagyu in my mouth, not to mention chef's tamago and other Omakase dishes, would definitely come back alone to enjoy everything again!
After a busy day of work, I sit down and watch chef's busy work just getting started with such a nice flow in his SOP for each nigiri. He love what he does and sometimes even dance a little with the background music.
Would definitely recommend for any occasion, please be patient, chef will serve you the best quality he chooses for you.
Every dish was delicious! Service was great!
Loved the experience. Loved watching the sushi chef prep our meal.👍🏼
A delight to the senses. The presentation of each dish accentuates the delicate and sometimes bold flavors, textures and scents that make you heady and ready for more.
Really worth to come over. The chef and waitress are super polite and nice. The food are super delicious. I will definitely come again.
If you are in costa mesa and you love Japanese food you must try it .
A Michelin ⭐️ restaurant with omakase menu you wont go wrong .
Hanare to go! I've wanted to try it for years, and we wanted to celebrate so we gave it a go.
We shared the omakase and the chirashizushi - both were incredible experiences. The two sets were a great amount of food for 2.
The omakase appetizers were unlike anything I've ever had. Super original flavor combinations. The nigiri blew me away. Amazing flavors and textures.
The chirashizushi had a lot of similar fish to the nigiri - but the rice base was really unusual (with onion, I think?).
My favorite of the three was the nigiri - best sushi I've ever had. Though the appetizers were really special.
I believe the omakase came with a panacotta, which I loved. A lovely meal closer. Super creamy, light and fresh.
2 people with one bottle sake with tips $900+ omakase
10 seat sushi restaurant. From the first course you know how they got a Michelin star Impeccable quality and attention to detail. Very special experience if you love sushi.
Amazing dining experience… every dish was a work of art and explosion of flavor and fresh fish…perfect date night
