SO legit.. I've only been here once, but I will rave about my food until the day I die... or I go back, and have something crappy - who knows. My mom brought me here and ordered the Lion's Head, which wasn't on the menu but apparently is Tom's specialty that is made fresh in the mornings and usually sells out by the afternoon. Lion's Head is basically two large pork shumai (or siomai, however you'd like to spell it) with tofu, glass noodles and a rich broth, served with a side of rice. It's basically the most legitimate, and delicious, Chinese dish I've ever eaten. I've never really thought about coming in here to eat because it's usually either closed or so seemingly small/cramped/uncomfortable, but it's actually pretty spacious inside and if it's open, I suggest coming here and ordering the Lion's Head or anything else they serve that's not on the menu. (For the Lion's Head, try coming in earlier in the day, i.e. before the lunch rush - apparently it sells out fast!)
I have been coming to Tom's for over a decade now. Never have been disappointed. Huge portions at low cost. Tom always looked mad while cooking ( I have seen him smile though), but I could taste the passion in every bite. I recommend this place every chance I get!
This chef knows his stuff. I get the "beef tenderloin on rice" stew every single time. It's perfect.
He often shares insights on how different schools of thought have influenced his cooking, and many other interesting tidbits.
The anonymous user below argued the place offers poor service. I wholeheartedly disagree. The food is the service. If you need someone to do anything more for you than take your order, why don't you try a diner with a wait staff? Two people share the responsibilities of cooking, taking orders, management, etc. Your Chinese friends suggested this restaurant because the food is phenomenal--it's as simple as that. They don't have much in the way of waiting and bussing tables, or amenities like a nice trash enclosure, but they maintain spectacular food safety standards (check them out yourself).
Very authentic Chinese food cooked by an old Chinese couple. I usually just asked the lady of whatever special they have that day. My favorite is a pork rib stew.
Been there after a long day study, very warm place to have dinner
