My partner and I have now eaten from umi 4, with 1 time being take out. The take out was not as enjoyable or fulfilling as dinning in.
When dining in we have sampled a different bottle of sake each time and all of them have been wonderful. We have very much enjoyed their miso soup, sushi boat, Unagi Don, and a few other rolls.
I definitely think they shine with their sashimi and specialty rolls the most. However we will definitely be coming back for more.
The whole meal we had tonight was extra special with the asian pear saki. Light, not too sweet. Complemented just about everything we ate. Tried the volcano roll ... so delicious and not too spicy. Whatever the sauce is adds so much yum. Godzilla roll is usually my fave, but volcano may have just taken over. The tuna special going on now is incredible. They describe it as the fatty part of the tuna. Must try!!!
Also just sampled their shumai pork...tiny but big on flavor. Topped it all off with some green tea ice cream that was also excellent.
One of my favorite Japanese restaurants in the area. Wonderful sushi, sashimi, rolls, entrees and more. Having spent several years in Japan this place is very reminiscent and hits the mark every time and every way. Big plus is plenty of gluten free options to include noodles, rolls, entree and they have gluten free soy sauce. Vegan options are also available.
Fully stocked bar, traditional sushi bar. Great ambiance. Small and intimate.

It was packed when I went there for dinner with my friend. The server was kind, but the service was slow. It took awhile for our food to arrive after we ordered.
Shrimp Tempura Appetizer was good and crispy. The batter is not as light as the tempuras I had in japan.
Gyoza is like any gyoza you get from other Japanese restaurants. It was good.
Yellowtail roll and Torch Yellow Tail, my friend didn’t finished them, especially the spicy torched version. It was too spicy and too much sauce.
Sashimi Deluxe, most of the sashimis were delicious while few were just ok. I will order it again.
It was a good experience overall. There is room for improvement.
My husband and I lived in Japan for a few years and had some top notch sushi over there along with some places in Florida where we lived our whole lives before moving to Virginia. I can honestly say Umi is without a doubt the BEST sushi place we have tried EVER. Don’t bother going anywhere else - we have tried some other places nearby and were very disappointed. The fish is fresh and their special rolls have so much flavor. Besides the tuna spoon and salmon sashimi, our favorite rolls are the volcano roll, amazing roll, and superman roll. Also love the pork gyoza and fried rice. Every time family comes up to visit from Florida, going to Umi is on their to-do list, and has becomes a bi-weekly, if not weekly staple restaurant for our family.
This place exceeded my expectations... Every bit of 5 stars! From the amazing service to the delicious sushi. We had some melt in your mouth Toro sashimi, a Miami roll (newfound fave), Amazing roll (yes it was amazing), and the Dynamite roll. Everything was super tasty and fresh. Tempura cheesecake for dessert was the perfect finish to a great dinner.
