Cornbread was hot and cooked perfectly. Our table ordered catfish, shrimp, gumbo, best onion rings ever, stuffed crab, and steak. Everything was great! Desert was an amazing slice of cheesecake. Christine was the best server. Very attentive and friendly.
Great foods.. fish was awesome . I had the grill founder. It was good, family have the catfish. It’s was better . Highly recommend that. Corn bread was great
We had the gumbo and the old brazos special and they were both fantastic along with the fried pickles, onion rings, cornbread, and Cole slaw!!! THEN our 3 year old little man decided to try his hand at chair scooting at the table again after the first fall on the ground didn’t hurt badly enough. He was quite successful the second time around when he nearly bit off a large chunk from his bottom lip!!! Yay.... he was very loudly crying but the staff was very sweet and attentive. I believe it was the owner who followed us to the bathroom to check on us and give us an ice filled wash cloth and some cups for water! Thank you guys for your sweet care!
I went in about 3PM today to have a steak. My steak was perfect, the potatoes were awesome and the fried pickles were the best I've ever had. To top it off, Dave my server did an amazing job representing the restaurant with excellent, friendly service.
The service was great. And the food IS ALWAYS great. Waiter was on his game. The Coleslaw and cornbread was great as always.
Would recommend this to everyone.
Our group totaled 35 people each and everyone of us got excellent service. Highly recommend on the river.
My hubby took me here today for lunch and Patsy was our waitress. She was awesome!! She was very personable, attentive and took great care of us. We absolutely think she deserves a raise. She had us laughing the whole time and the food was great!! We will definitely be back here and will request her as our waitress. Thank you Patsy for making our lunch so great!! I wish I could give more stars but 5 is all it would let us give.
Where to start? At the beginning, I guess! Larry was our waiter, as well as our bar tender. The Patron Margaritas were very tasty! Then the cornbread was brought out...WOW! Could have easily made a meal out of that stuff! Next came the “Krab au Gratin”. Meal #2 for sure! Shari had the Gumbo. Says it was good! I had the Stuffed Shrimp ! It was good also! I will definitely go back to this place next time I’m in Freeport, TX!
Very homey place. Great food and we had the best lady as our server. Would definitely go back again.
The best seasoned crawfish around not to mention the crab Augratin is the best around!!
Went on Mother's Day with a group of 40 people, , excellent service, .My husband was going to order from menu cause he wanted oysters, , no oysters on buffet, ,, manager was kind enough to bring him some no charge with buffet, , now thats outstanding service, , thank you to the manager, , waitresses were great , we will be back! !!
Wonderful service, great food. Cheyenne, our waitress was very helpful with my dad's very strict diet. They have a large gluten-free menu. They have grilled options if you don't want fried food. Very nice atmosphere. I'd give them 10 stars if I could! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Had a wonderful lunch with the crew at Chiquita. Fried pickles are to die for! The best homemade ranch dressing tho dip them in. We had a range of lunch specials. Shrimp, coleslaw, fries... Wonderful. The shrimp are big and battered delicious! Fried catfish has cornmeal crust, fresh! As my dad would say..."that's a yellow cat"! I had stopped coming here for a while due to service, but I'm so glad my crew decided on here ....
Bring back the pickled onions🤍 I've been coming here since y'all was across the street in that big building🤍
The food was amazing. Took a small bites out of the food in the pick, it looked so good I couldnt help myself xD. Tasted as good as it looked too. The máshed potatoes were awesome and to my suprise, after being traumatizef by so many dry cornbreads, the cornbread in the pick ACTUALLY tasted like bread, almost like cake, except a bit more savory than sweet. The staff was nice, and this meal was satisfying. I cant remeber the name of the dish, but regardless, 10/10 would recommend, if you not sure where to eat in this area of town.
Took my family group of 20 here and it was a fantastic experience! They had great food, amazing service, and even catered to my brother who is Gluten Free. Highly recommend! Corn bread was super yummy!
Love the cornbread and slaw! Waitstaff was amazing, really nice made sure we were ok and had everything we needed, without over crowding us, topped off our drinks. Facility clean. Food good.
Wife loved the coleslaw and mashed potatoes and the fried shrimp. Peach cobbler was also good
Visited for the first time a few days ago and the food was excellent. The jalapeños cornbread was awesome. Would definitely recommend this place and will definitely return.
I cannot express this enough this restaurant was absolutely amazing!!! The food 🤌🏼 the mozzarella sticks are so good the fried pickles are so good . The coleslaw with corn bread amazing!! The hamburger is melt in your mouth good. I have NEVER had food as good as the food they served. WE WILL BE COMING BACK 🙌🏼
I’ve been coming here since 89 and I was born in 87. We spoke with Chris recently and I was able to introduce him to my boy who is Two and will be the six generation of my family that has continued to eat here. Simple easy local food. Not fast food not fine dining, good local diner food with a seafood focus.
My heart has some purchase here as I grew up with my grandparents taking me with my great grandparents, my parents, cousins, aunts and uncles all here. Even back at the old location across the street.
I’m a lifer here. Come on by and make some memories
This place was GREAT! The hospitality was astounding. The boudin balls were some of the best we have had. The coleslaw and cornbread served before the meal was a nice and delicious touch. We will definitely be sure to stop by here again in the future.

We had heard many great things about On The River so we stopped by to see for ourselves. We chose to have dinner on a Saturday evening. The restaurant was about one-third full when we arrived but got busier after our arrival.
SERVICE:
The service was perfect. We were greeted as we entered the restaurant and were immediately seated by a friendly hostess. After we settled in, our friendly server met us at the table and started our beverage order. Our food arrived quickly and was piping hot when it hit the table.
FOOD:
The food was really great! Our meal started with small bowls of coleslaw and cast iron cornbread. Both of these items tasted fresh and were delicious. The main course for everyone was seafood. We enjoyed several different recipes of shrimp and catfish. The shrimp was well prepared. The grilled shrimp is seasoned well and full of flavor. The fried shrimp was lightly battered and tender. The stuffed shrimp is a unique item with a bold flavor. The Cajun shrimp is seasoned in a slightly spicy mix and tastes great. The catfish was also lightly battered and buttery soft. We had the cast iron cookie and blueberry cobbler for dessert. Both were amazing. Bring an appetite because there is no shortage of food in their meals.
ATMOSPHERE:
The restaurant is well maintained and clean. That being said, it is a really neat old building. The hardwood floors and decor take you back many decades to when life was simpler and you could just enjoy a great meal at a fair price down at the local cafe.
We were very quickly enamored by On The River. This restaurant has everything including good ol’ fashion charm. Whether you are in the Freeport area or willing to make the easy drive down, make sure you stop by On The River for a great meal at good price. This restaurant easily gets five stars.
Visited from out-of-state. Got the grilled redfish and garlic mashed potatoes. (Meal came with coleslaw and hush puppies). Redfish was grilled perfectly… done inside, but not dry, nor was it wet and mushy. Potatoes were very good with a good serving portion. Coleslaw was awesome. I’m a bit of a coleslaw snob, but was very pleasantly surprised. Hush puppies, though, needed a little help. They were packy and not much flavor. Our server, Alan, was awesome. He was very pleasant and never let our drink glasses get empty. Will dine there again when I’m n the area.
Such good food! The mini skillet of cornbread was delicious and the margarita was so good! Great place to dine!
A cozy restaurant with a 'cluttered rustic' aesthetic, and about what you'd expect of any long term local place just about anywhere.
They provide both a military discount and a first timer discount, so a 20 dollar meal wound up being 11. So no excuse not to tip the bill in that case.
On to the food....
The corn bread has jalapeno in it, either juice or extract, I'm not sure. It's just enough to provide a bit of flavor and aroma. It's nowhere near as spicy as cornbread with jalapenos in it, so it has it's own flair. And it's some of the best corn bread I've ever had that hasn't been "plain".
The dinner here is blackened catfish with rice pilaf and vegetables. Nothing much special about the rice pilaf, not bad but not super oily, so that's a plus.
The vegetables we're seasoned fabulously and admittedly a bit softer than I'd like, but they'd make it for easy chewing from kids or old folks. That said, best veggies I've ever had at a restaurant.
The blackened catfish was done very well, and was perfectly flaky, these people really know how to cook fish right, I cannot recommend this more highly. And it wasn't overpoweringly spicy. When the meal was brought my waitress offered tartar or cocktail sauce, and already had both on her tray, good looking out.
The only negatives with my experience were the hush puppies... They were strangely crumbly. But I don't much care for those anyway.
I liked and enjoyed the place. I will go again. Everything was normal nothing was bad.
Great food! Took the family and everyone was happy and stuffed when we left. We all had some form of seafood, clean place and awesome service. Our server Chelsye was the best, refills before they were needed and clearing plates as we finished them! She needs a raise for sure!
