John is one of a handful (3 to 5 guys) that on any given day can make the best barbecue in the world. Him, Franklin, Pinkerton, Snow, and names like that can all edge each other out on any day of the week.
Brisket: Exactly what you would expect from the best of the best. His bark has a little more pepper than most but sets it apart from the rest. Some people will complain about it, some would turn away free money too. I ask for the moist cut which is so delicate it's hard to hold with a fork, but also gives you the "meat sweats" a little quicker.
Beef Ribs: I believe that this is what sets John apart from the rest and I really believe is his speciality. His beef ribs are the best I have ever had out of all the BBQ heroes. Again, strong pepper but not overpowering to me.
Pork Ribs: These pork ribs are great. Period. But skip them and get the beef rib.
Jalapeno Boudin: OMG good. Gives a great contrast to the super meaty meal combo of brisket/ribs.
Sides: Who cares? Seriously, this is about the meat. I like to get a slice of cheddar to break it up much the same way the boudin does.
Did I mention FREE BEER yet? Yeah. It's for real. Free Lonestar.
Final Thoughts: I love John. Say what you want about him but he is as real and genuine of a person as there is. I always make it a point to tell him how great of a meal it was each time and he is always very gracious about it. Dont let his lack of a filter take the focus off of his cooking. Period. In my mind you will NOT get better BBQ. You will get equally as good from all those other places, and every day each one could be the "best ever" given any number of factors. If you loved his other places because of the food, you will love this version of it. I went on a Sunday at noon and the line was never longer than 3-5 people the whole time I was there.
I’ve been coming here every week since they opened. The staff, Justin, John, Shelby, Preston and Carlos etc are all some of the nicest people in Georgetown.
My go to’s are the brisket and turkey, and I would say the sausage is the best in Texas as well. John loves to do special editions like banana pudding, pies, tomahawk pork chops and brisket stew - and they all should be staples IMO. You won’t find better BBQ anywhere, anytime.
Went on Sunday and it was delicious. No fancy frills or spices. Just salt pepper and the meat flavor. Staff was great and polite even though it was hot and they were working. If you want fancy rubs and exotic sauces this is not the place for you but if you enjoy tried and true Texas BBQ the way it was done from day one this is the place for you. Beef ribs are a must as are the Brisket and sausage. And if you want a lighter fare get the Turkey its peppery and juicy. Please nobody get offended all this is in my humble opinion. John Mueller and your staff keep doing what your doing its working. Hope to be back soon.
Ok, I’ve eaten at Black Box Barbecue for lunch three days in a row. I’ve eaten the brisket, sausage, chopped beef sandwich, and the pork ribs. To me it was the best BBQ that I’ve had in a long time. John makes some of the best sauce for it, but you really don’t need it. I hope on Wednesday I can make it here for the pork chops.
I have been very fortunate enough to try bbq all over this great country! John Mueller’s Flavors are legendary. Casual and welcoming atmosphere make this one of my favorite bbq spots. The brisket never disappoints and beef rib is excellent. Perfect beef sausage and the potato salad that compliments the food. Keep up the great work and we will continue to visit every time we are in the area.
Amazing BBQ. I've reviewed the brisket and beef rib before at this location and at the old John Mueller Meat Company, still amazing. Easily #1
in the state, top 5 or 10 in the nation. The bark on the meat is unlike anything else, better than Louies, La Barbeque or Franklin's. The jalapeno boudin, cheesy squash, potato salad are perfection. Pity they are only open 4 days out of the week.
This place is by far the best BBQ I ever had. When I worked close to downtown Austin I would eat off the location at 6th. Then one day it was gone. BBQ is so good I tracked you down! Ha ha it just so happens we are moving to Georgetown towards the end of the year. Glad I found you again! #bestbbq
Excellent brisket sandwich for ten bucks. Had a free beer with it too, can't beat that. Sauce is exactly like my uncle's famous sauce, I hate to even put sauce on this brisket but the sauce is just as good as the meat, so definitely try it! Also, beans were good.
John is a wild man but nobody makes better BBQ. I've tried them all: Lockhart, Taylor, Llano, Spicewood. I love them all, but John Mueller smokes meat like nobody's business. Brisket is moist with the perfect bark and seasoning. Sausage, which I believe he makes himself, is phenomenal with a litttle bite. Sides are fine but a bit pricy in my opinion, but I don't go there for the sides. And if you are up for it, give the ginormous beef rib a try. Pricy, but worth it. Just go check it out. You won't be disappointed.
I've eaten barbecue all over the U.S. I think this is the best I have ever had. I had the brisket, pork ribs, and jalepeno Boudin sausage. The Boudin was outstanding. The brisket and ribs juicy and outstanding. I don't know how you can improve it. I also had the slaw and potato salad. Both were great. The sauce is phenomenal. The only downside is it is real hot outside and you have to fight the flies. I can only imagine how hot it will be once summer fully hits. A couple of fans might be nice. I'm definitely going again.
No BBQ is ever the same as the last place you ate some. Georgetown is the center of a desert of good BBQ, and the Black Box is an oasis of deliciousness. The samples we feasted on while in line were reminiscent of a dessert item, melted in your mouth with textures and hardy tastes, crunchy & soft but not too juicy. Plus the staff were super cool people! I'm glad I camped out and waited 3 days to get some.
