NHM is one of the best dining experiences we’ve had in Grand Rapids. Amazing service, bigger-city quality food, Detroit-esque architectural detail. Top notch wine list. So glad to have a fresh place around! The coffee and canelé (must try) were superb. Fries were extra crispy, mussels impeccably clean and flavorful. On another visit, had the best quiche I have ever had, won't be able to eat it anywhere else now. Highly recommend to come here for any occasion, whether a special date, family gathering (including les bébés!), or just a quick coffee & pastry.

I went with my boyfriend for the first time tonight. We both have been wanting to go for a while and finally we were able to, and, I have to say, our evening was absolutely perfect. The service was incredible. I was greeted very kindly at the door and was asked about my day on the way to our table. Our server was very kind and upbeat and helped us out with our drink options which did not disappoint. The food was phenomenal. We ordered the cheese lady trolly, the pressed pork belly, and the Quiche Lorraine. The cheese from the trolly was devine (duh, Cheese Lady never disappoints) the pork belly was the perfect sweet spot of crispy and fatty, and the quiche was like custard. Amazing. Everything was amazing. We have nothing negative to say about our experience tonight. We will be back soon!

Once again, you made our day! Love everything about you; keep that French music, even the French horns! In the words of my friend Jane, “ You are bringing Paris to GR, one French entree at a time!” Just loved our sweet server, Schyler, so continually trying to please . We shall come again and recommend you; so classic and classy

So happy to see an old building brought to life. This place is my new go to for client meetings. The ambiance of this place falls perfectly in line with the menu, staff and service. 5 stars in my book.

Good food, great service. Grand Rapids needed a brasserie and this fills the bill. Coq au vin was on point, steak frites was good as well.

What a wonderful Bastille Day dinner! The appetizers, entrees, and cocktails were all delicious and clearly prepared by someone with a deep love for and appreciation of French cuisine. The service was excellent. The atmosphere and decor were so unique: sophisticated rustic. They pay a beautiful homage to the old Hotel Mertens. Perfect place to meet for a drink date or dinner date. Highly recommend.

Such a fresh, nice-but-casual, French brasserie experience in GR! The menu is wide-open, whether you want an omelette or a well-appointed burger... or Lobster Thermidor or Chateaubriand for two! The service was attentive without being overbearing (u know how some people just ‘get it?’), and they helped us choose an awesome meal! We’re looking forward to going back & bringing friends!!

Very well done. Great server and service. Lovely atmosphere. And I think it is a great value. Already decided this is my spot for Birthday Dinner. I tad loud but hey, it’s popular.

This place is fantastic, a throw-back to being a very well-socialized, well-mannered upper middle class kid:) Never thought I'd see those days again! Thrilling to have the option just a few blocks from my apartment.

Stellar service and atmosphere 👌 not a frown from any of the employees!! This was such a welcoming restaurant and I was completely blown away. They exceeded my expectations in every way! The food was full of flavor, large portions and hot! Our waitress Liz made sure we were happy and that the food met our expectations ❤️ I'm so thankful for her today! Before dinner we met the owner and he gave us a tour and history lesson about the building then showed us upstairs to the roof top bar where we were greeted by even more friendly staff 😀 if I could give this place 1000 stars 🌟 I would. You have a customer for life from me and my husband, we will always dine here when we visit grand rapids. Thank you so much for your service today, you made us feel like royalty 💜

It was definitely a nice experience to have. It's a cute little restuarant with a roof top bar looking over downtown GR. Food was just okay. We tried the ratatouille, salmon, ribeye & mashed potatoes.

First time in, and it is one of my favorite places in Grand Rapids. The food was fantastic, not inexpensive but good value for money. I definitely recommend the French onion soup. The steak was simple, but done to perfection. I love the cocktails on the menu. Service was just a little off, they were slow to clear the used dishes, and too quick with the second course, we were still busy on our soup when the steaks came out. The dining room has a raw/unfinished/old time vibe which almost makes it charming, but feels a little dingy instead. For me the food and the value are what count and I will definitely go back.

Wow, this place is still great! We visited awhile back when it was still called New Hotel Mertens. It hasn't lost any of the charm that made it great. The building and ambiance is a delight, and the service is what you'd expect for an upscale meal. Both our dishes were fantastic, and the Duck à l'orange is one of the best we've had anywhere. We also took a visit to the rooftop bar, which couldn't have been more perfect. Absolutely great all around, thanks to Mertens for making this a special day.

Went here on a whim - they were able to squeeze us in when no one else would. We had a wonderful server, delicious food, great drinks. Definitely will be back. Also the scallops were like butter - even if you don’t care for seafood order them you won’t regret it!!

Mertens Prime is the definition of a premium steakhouse restaurant. It's a tight race between MDRD and Mertens Prime for the title of the fanciest schmanciest restaurant in Grand Rapids. You're going to want to dress up a little to come here or you're going to feel out of place. The location has a lot of history baked right into the menu. The cocktail menu hails back to the early 1900s when this building was a fancy schmancy hotel in the same hospitality vein as the world famous Ritz Carlton. The ambiance of the place leans into that history. The bar itself even has mixologists in the white lab coat, setting the tone of how seriously this place is about what it's trying to be. The menu explains the chronological history of the various owners (like Mertens) and of the building itself. It's really fascinating stuff. I love that our humble city of Grand Rapids boasts something like this. I don't even have to tell you this place is going to cost you a mortgage payment. Drinks are actually pretty standard downtown prices, around 12-20 dollars for a cocktail. The lowest end steak they have is going to be 70 dollars. All the sides are a la carte. I had the Brussels sprouts with my steak. They were so good they made me want to slap past me for ever saying I didn't like Brussels sprouts. Just so you prepare, if you and a plus one get a steak, a side, and a drink each, you're staring down the barrel of a 250 dollar bill without tip. They have some other things on the menu if you want to try and keep the bill down. They had various poutines on the menu, which surprised me some. But this is Mertens Prime. If you're here, get a steak. It'll rank among the best steaks you'll ever have in your life. That's a promise. If you're going out for a fancy dinner to celebrate a life achievement or you're attempting to dine and dazzle a client, then Mertens Prime is an excellent choice. You're definitely going to need reservations, though, so be prepared.

The place is unique in that it is an historical building that serves French cuisine and wine. Onion soup was delicious. Overall, the steak and duck were comparable to other restaurants with lower prices.

My partner and I recently stopped off at Mertens on a whim for a date night. Just so happened to be on the same day they dropped their new menu. Food was great and service was very attentive. They had actually only given us a half order of the pork belly we had ordered, and were quick to inform us of the slip up and get the other half out quickly. Super good stuff. Pricey, but it’s clear why those prices are.

The host was super rude but the servers were amazing. Water tasted weird to me but I don't like tap water. Very accommodating with my sodium restrictions for the steak kind of disappointed that the garlic that came with it was hard to eat instead of the soft version, garlic mashed potato was delicious though.

4 of us are here for the first time. Front or house and waiter were amazing! So nice. Service was great. Bartender didn’t greet us until 10 min and the steaks were over cooked. 4 stars is good considering they had a new grill guy. Salmon was amazing, Filet Medallions were in point! We will be back!

From out of town but visit GR frequently for work. Been to all of the steak joints around town... RC, Bowdies, Leo's.... this place is right there on the 10 scale! The ribeye was fantastic!!! There were 5 of us and zero complaints. Not really a knock but the wine list was very short on Californian wine. I think they featured othe country's wines. I'm a huge Sonoma / Napa fan. Definitely give this place a shot!!

We had a wonderful dinner. We started with the Dijon poutine, and then I had the Ratatouille stuffed pepper, and my husband had the turtle soup and beet salad. For dessert, we ended with cherries jubilee, with a lovely table side presentation, and 3 oz cheese plate.

Downstairs, I was greeted professionaly and politely. Leslie and Sarah were great. I ordered soup: Caoune(alligator snapping turtle w/poached egg) and Salad Aux Bacon Lardons. The service and food were spot on, I couldn't have asked for or done better. I decided to try the rooftop experience and ordered the White Wine Roasted Chicken. I informed my server what I wanted to eat, he took my order but did not return to ask if I wanted anything to drink. Another server delivered my food and he asked if I wanted something to drink. I asked for a cognac. I also explained my disappointment with the previous servers lack of regard for checking on me and not asking what I wanted to drink (server 101 basics) I'm leaving 4 stars as opposed to 3 becuase my cognac was comped and my service at the bar was exemplary. The manager there knows the business and how to make things right. Overall worth my time. Would be a great place to take a date but I was riding solo at the time. (Side note, I lost my menu becuase of the wind)

First visit to Mertens Prime & had a great time. Nice atmosphere, romantic decor/table settings & friendly service. Loved the Fizz cocktail, Poutine, Marrow & Cherries Jubilee that I ordered. Hostess was prompt greeting & seating me but seemed like they were going through the motions. May have been an off night but first impressions...

My husband and I came here for the first time today and were very impressed! The food was delicious and the drink list was impressive as well. The only thing I would recommend, is that they have more Wines By The Glass. The history of the building is pretty cool too. It's old school, but with a modern charm.

Place looks great. Has a good feel to it, fancy, impress your date fancy. Food was okay. Waiter still in training but he did well. Management could of helped him a bit. All in all don’t really think I will be back, not really my personal preference.
