I’ve eaten at several of the top tier sushi restaurants in the country. I put Bizen up with best of the best. The quality of fish is top notch. Bizen is a gem located in the Berkshires! Better than NOBU, Yes I said it! 5 stars all around!
Delicious fresh sushi and other authentic Japanese food. Beautiful decor including the plates that are custom made. The sushi is expertly prepared by a master, a true work of art you can eat while visiting the Berkshires. My vote for the best food in the Berkshires
I used to work here from November 2007 to March 2008. This restaurant is beautiful! The top floor has a sushi bar in the center. The owner himself works in it and we used to rub elbows. The bar features a Robata Grill for appetizer portions like shrimp and chicken skewers. Aside from the main menu there is also a Kaiseki menu which offers authentic Japanese cuisine. The Miso soup is wonderful as well as the green tea ice cream which the owner makes himself. The top floor also features authentic private Kaiseki rooms with Geisha Girl service. If you go down a flight of stairs to the lower level you'll find a display of the owner's beautiful pottery. It is also an additional dining area with wooden booths and tables. The servers are polite, experienced and knowledgeable. The bussers assist them well by running food and desserts. They also serve hot hand towels before the meal and keep up with drink refills. All sushi/sashimi is freshly prepared and of the highest quality. The special rolls are very unique and creative, while traditional rolls are available as well. The bar features liquor, American and Japanese beer as well as Sake (cold and hot). The main menu features traditional noodles, chicken teriyaki and tuna steaks (just to name a few). The amount of variety in the menus, high quality service and nice atmosphere will keep you coming here time and time again. I live too far away now but I miss this place very much. No matter how many Japanese restaurants I may eat at throughout the remainder of my life this will always be my favorite! Thank you FOREVER Michael Marcus for teaching me how to make sushi. I still do it til this day. I wish you all the best in life and in your business. Take care.
The very best sushi and everything they serve is a piece of art. Delicious and Michael makes a little ten year old's birthday very special. Thank you Michael
The best-- for years! Love the Afghanistan roll, the monkfish liver, and everything else we have ever ordered!
Had a most delicious dinner (and dessert) the other nite. The food is always fresh and delicious & Michael's pottery is amazing. The best Japanese food around, by far.

The most incredible sushi created by the wonderful chef/owner Michael
The atmosphere is extremely inviting and friendly. It is absolutely some of the best Japanese food I have ever had. The sea bass was exquisite. The crispy outside and the center melted in my mouth. This is a must stop. The waitress was very helpful and friendly. Stop by today!
We went out as a party of 4. We got a private table. We had absolutely delicious sushi. All the food was high quality. I highly recommend bizen for a special occasion. They also have an excellent selection of wine and cocktails.
This is the greatest vegetarian sushi I have ever had! So beautifully presented and delightful! I had the special Busking Roll which included tempeh and micro greens. It was unbelievable! I also had the Vegetable Tempura which included a very large mushroom and also a red pepper -- unusual and delicious! The service was excellent! We ate outside and it was wonderful. Note about unique restroom: The restroom is decorated with such a beautiful tile and such that you really felt serene in there -- must be a Shinto-based philosophy because the tile was on all the walls and it was a beautiful stone with lots of texture and subtle colors. I felt supported by these rocks in a very subtle way. I usually don't care about things like that, but it was just so lovely and full of feeling! Unique!
Other ratings say that they’re inconsistent with the food and the service is sometimes bad. Never really had any issues though, however it sometimes takes a while to be served. The food is always great though. Recommend the shrimp katsu, they do a great job with the sauce. Their traditional green tea makes a nice drink. Their menu has more than enough to choose from. I recommend coming here if you’re in the area
Sushi and noodles were fresh and tasty. Fresh fish is flown in and used at this finest establishment. I was not too crazy about their Ginger Chicken, The chicken was tuff and big cuts with little taste of ginger.
What a hidden gem. I saw this place and thought you cant get good sea food this far inland. I was very wrong. Every bite was better than the last, I'm sure u could spend $1000 a head and find better Japanese food but this was the best I ever had. The best squid I've had, best seafood salad (spicy scallop and octopus), amazing seared tuna with horseradish sauce, and a monkfish pate to write home about. Fatty tuna and eel are on my list for next time. Service was good not great. I ate outside on a gorgeous summers eve and loved it but then saw the inside and cant wait to come back and eat in a traditional Japanese setting. Owners(I think) were so warm hearted. Must try!
I'm giving 4/5 stars not 5, because the hot food (soups, noodles) I find not very interesting compared to other places. But all of their sushi combos, rolls, warm apetizers are delicious. I love the peanut/tofu apetizers and we always get edamame. The hot sake is super good too. It always feels like a treat to dine here, even when it's crowded and we have to wait a while for our order.
Delicious more authentic Japanese food. Appreciate that the tempura came with daikon and ginger, and the dashi was just better than most run of the mill places. Inside they have traditional seating on tatamis. Sushi was fresh.
Unreal restaurant! The food is spectacular and 100% worth the wait. We forgot to make a reservation but the squeezed us in despite being super busy. We got an amazing corner table where you sit in the floor in traditional Japanese style. The food is out of this world and the waitstaff are so friendly despite their need to hustle to help all of the tables. We will be back again and again!
Vegan options very limited but otherwise the menu is huge. Stir fry with soba noodles was very flavorful. Noodles were perfect.
Deliciously fresh rolls! We will return!

Atmosphere: Indoors has authentic decor and nice waterfall. The table seating arrangement looks as if you are sitting on the ground but are actually sitting
Cost: $$-$$$
I had the grilled salmon with the buckwheat noodles and iced green tea and green tea ice cream. It was 98 degrees in the shade and we opted for outside seats. The server advised my husband and I on menu choice. She was very friendly and had a pleasent personality. The food portons filled us up and the Japanese decor was classic Japanese with traditional seating and ground to floor stone. It was a perfect location to people watch and the servers included persons of many different backgrounds. I said EXTRA ICE Please for a hot day and a fabulous meal.
Very excellent food, multiple types of Toro, my kind of place. A little too fancy for my pre-teen who is used to Japanese dishes being less fancy
This place has a wide variety of Japanese cuisine. I wanted a Bloody Mary but they dont serve that so I ordered a Gin & Tonic. They were out of Tanqueray. Cocktails aren't really this place's strong point. They have Blue Fin tuna sushi here. Isn't that an endangered species? The chairs could use some padding. The atmosphere is pretty good. The dining room is separated into several rooms.
Great food and service. Decor is traditional Japanese style, but could use a refresh. We vent save with their Covid-19 protocols.
