This is a nice little hidden gem in Hartford. My husband and I enjoy the custard greatly. I check the board in front of Mickey's regularly to find out what the Featured Sundae is. I love how creative they are with some of their concoctions. the Red, White, and Blue explosion, and the Rhubarb Streusel are among my favorites.
Custard is Good, Food not so much. The custard is always good. Never had a complaint about that.
The food on the other hand, is first, let me say,. extremely overpriced. It's a custard stand for god's sake, and they are charging 7-8$ for burgers and such.
Burgers are OK, but they are typically underdone (my wife had one once that was actually part raw).
Gyros are frozen & thawed Gyro meat that you can buy in a grocery store. Seriously, why bother puting this on your menu if you can't do it properly?
Cheese curds are AWESOME, but again, they are like $5.
I'd skip on the food and stick with the custard.
I grew up in an area that had more single spot, old school custard and grilled burger concepts instead of just drive through mass produced stuff. This reminds me of home. Of how things used to be. The custard here rivals my hometown spots of Ted Drew's and Fritz's. Rich and tasty. Sitting on a bench with it dripping down the cone into your fingers while you make memories with your kids.
The hero of their stand for me though is the burgers. Locally sourced beef that you can almost sense you drove past the farm a few days prior. You know it's great quality. The cheese is the right kind that melts but doesn't dissolve away. Rough chopped onions. I like the Chicago relish on mine. Just a great old school burger that I could eat in place of almost every other burger for the season they are open. I appreciate the fact that food is not being handed to me 3 minutes after I ordered it. That's how it should be: grilled to order, one order at a time. For those wanting food faster, I would suggest one the golden arches. For those wanting a freshly made amazing tasting burger, this is for you
Mickey’s is an absolute old-fashioned gem. If you’re a Hartford resident who’s never been or someone visiting the area, GO. It’s a must with a charming exterior and awesome food. The burgers are truly excellent (similar to Culver’s in my opinion but significantly better) and the ice-cream is also fantastic. I myself can’t live without their strawberry shake/malt. If you’re a strawberry shake fan like myself, this may be one of the best you’ve ever had. Their deep-fried green beans taste farmer’s-market fresh and the cheese curds are always a tasty side too! Honestly, everything I’ve had here is good. It’s made to order which is really nice - just prepare for a bit of a wait if the place is hopping. Outdoor seating only but we just eat in our car if the weather isn’t cooperating. This food is worth the cold and/or rain! And no, it’s not as cheap as, say, Culver’s, but the quality is worth the cost. You get what you pay for.
First timer this weekend and found out Mickey's is delicious! Fries were hot and crispy. The burger patty was juicy and delicious! The entire burger was perfect with a sturdy toasted bun and the sandwich was not sloppy despite the ketchup and mayo I requested as toppings. The custard was tasty too! I might return...weekly!
The custard was pretty good (I had the pistachio special, wife and kid just chocolate), nothing special though - especially not to justify the 30 minute wait though. Granted it was one of the first nice days out and they have great outdoor seating here
Fantastic food and friendly service. Burgers, fries, fried green beans, cheese curds, amazing frozen custard, and so much more! Order at the window and wait while they make it fresh. Outdoor seating only. And don't forget to grab a Frosty Paw for the dog.
A relatively small walk-up custard stand that serves good food and great custard. This place is much more appealing than the chain burger / custard restaurants nearby.
Plenty of outdoor seating, and the parking area is small but there's another lot next door that gets used a lot as needed.
Due to the nature of their business they're closed during the winter. During their operating season there's usually a motorcycle show / gathering Tuesdays and a car show Thursdays. I recommend checking their social media for details.
