Local korean food stop before leaving back to the mainland. It hit the spot. Best Meat chun, kalbi. Everything as i remember local Korean food to be. Living on the mainland, good local food is hard to fine..especially Korean. So this was the best.
Food was ono 😋 Atmosphere was chill and great white noise level island music playing.
First time visiting Hawaii and long time residents brought us here for a delicious dinner. This is their go to place for family dinners whenever people visit from the mainland. Some dishes were served family style and some were ordered as dinner plates. The dinner specials are very large servings so we all had enough to enjoy a late breakfast of leftovers the next day. All the meat dishes were so tasty and perfectly cooked, chicken , beef ribs and tempura shrimp. I’m not familiar with this type of cuisine and this was a great first dinner at a Korean restaurant. Friendly service. We had a bit of trouble getting out of the parking lot (paid lot-ticket kiosk issue) so I’d walk if staying close by.
A friend who is a resident, grew up eating here and wanted me to try it. First thing I noticed was how outdated it was inside and out, so the environment made me feel kind of meh. I was then bummed out that the kimchee didn't taste fresh, it was a bit sour which is a way of knowing. The bibimbop was good, kind of bland. It is very affordable and cheaper than most Korean restaurants. Overall it was good, just not great. MAHALO!
Service and food was great, we brought visiting friends to our neighborhood local Korean food. They enjoyed themselves and they loved the food.
A bit pricey but the food is delicious and plenty of portions - great service not too busy.
Generous portions and very tasty Korean dishes
been going here for over 20 years. i dont get here often because i live in las vegas now. but i always make it a point to come here. jimmy has been a staple here. i've never had a bad dish here. if i could i would order page 1 and 2🤣. when you go in tell em braddah jimmy i sent you.
The food here is great. BBQ chicken has so much flavor. Service was great as well. I'll definitely be back.
For me, this spot has always been a favorite local style Korean restaurant. I came back recently after seeing them on TV and the generosity of the owner during the pandemic.
This place is off the strip of Waialae Ave, near Happy Days and Big City Diner. Parking is in the lot behind and only costed us like $0.75 for less than two hours, I believe. It can get tight during dinner time so plan accordingly.
The recent visits I got to try the Meat Jun, Chicken Katsu, Bi Bim Kook Soo, L.A. Kal Bee, and Mandoo.
-Meat Jun is pretty good. Not too high batter-to-meat ratio. It is soft and fluffy.
-The Chicken Katsu was crispy and lean! No fatty parts!
-The Bi Bim Kook Soo was very tasty, spicy, and wonderfully diverse. Don't understimate as it is a good amount of spicy and has really delicious kimchi pieces. (It's different kimchi than the side dish they serve.)
-L.A Kal Bee was good! Very tasty and great grilled-taste. Not too salty and has a smoky flavor. Like a kalbi, there was a little bit of fat and the texture wasn't fall-off-the-bone but it still was tender.
-Mandoo as an appetizer was so big and tasty! These mandoos were huge and they were stuffed with pork, chap chae, cabbage, and other veggies. Ho my goodness - be careful of these as "apps" or "sides" because you might just get filled up!
Banchan is served with dishes. We got cabbage kimchi, potato salad, daikon kimchi, and seaweed soup before the meal. They are more on the "local" style of banchan but I like them! Little bit salty but that's Hawaii food for you.
Prices are moderate. Maybe on the pricier side but the portions are also big, so I'd say prices are pretty justified.
Again, I was inspired by the owner's generosity during the pandemic and I also wanted to come back to support a local, nostalgic (for me) business here in Hawaii. The owner himself is a busy man and he may come off as a little err "rude" but I don't mind. He's what I'd say is a "bada** with a heart of gold". Nothing but respect.
I am going to come back and try a new menu item! As much as the owner does his part to support the community, I gotta do my part and support local businesses like his. If you are feeling like eating some real local Korean-kine grindz and are in the Kaimuki area, try this place!
This is one of the few remaining single family owned restaurants in Honolulu. Their big bone Kal bi is simply the best 👌!
Always nice to see Jimmy's kids, they are such hard workers. The dinner special is a good mix of favorites. The fried mandoo is onolicious!
Food is great. Everyone is friendly. During the pandemic they offered to feed anyone hungry. You will not be disappointed. Great place to take your family.
We came home for a week to attend our Grandsons' graduation. We always stop here for dinner before we head back to the mainland. Got the dinner special and it was ono, plany food for share. Aloha for da grinds!
Aloha; what a great place to get great Korean food. They make one of the best meat jun dishes on island [no. 2]. They make sure you are nor hungry when you leave by stacking up your plate with ono food. They also give you vegies like Kim chee and tokuwan. Go check it out and let me know what you think..
Hidden gem … bbq pork is out of this world … check it out
