Looking for authentic home cooked Japanese food? You found it. Great place for fairly priced food, great service, and a fun or quiet atmosphere depending on when you get here. 7pm is quiet, after 9 is not. Enjoy the private karaoke rooms too!

I have been going to Genji for over 23 years since his location on Fondren near Richmond. The atmosphere is not kid friendly, it is more geared towards karaoke and drink after work type of environment. One thing that is constant is Mr. Genji himself, he is almost always there everyday. And we have been ordering the one thing only. His beef Yakiniku. This is the best I have ever had, and I have tasted every single yakiniku from USA, Japan and Korea, even Taiwan. His is simply the best. Paired with his delicious sticky Japanese rice, it is the ultimate food for my whole family. My sons are now 20s now and they grew up eating yakiniku from Genji. Picture does not do justice. We have followed him to every single location he moves to and will continue to do so. Shoutout to the Japanese lady with super long hair who has since passed. We miss you 😢

Update: Still the hub for many that want to spend time with friends to make memories. Staff is always welcoming and its very apparent that Mr. Genji is beloved by all that frequent this space. Original: Genji is a staple. Have been coming here for over 10 years. Vast and reasonably priced menu. The food is delicious and the open karaoke definitely adds to the ambience. It can get busy, but I've never had issues getting sat within a few minutes. Private rooms are available and the space is large enough to accommodate parties. If you're a night owl, this place is perfect for you.

We come here for the sashimi appetizer which is simple but tasty, tuna salmon squid, and the Yakiniku. We have tried the grilled squid, beef tongue, octopus balls-tako yaki , gyudon, yakitori, number one roll and others over various visits. I think the yakiniku is my favorite. The karaoke is fun too. Price is good in my opinion.

Fun place and the food has been consistently excellent; if you want authentic, traditional Japanese dishes, then you should come here. I'm not sure of the schedule, but they also offer karaoke and have a full stage. I eat here at least once each time I visit Houston. Please note: you must ask for your check when you're ready to go. They will not assume you're done and automatically bring it. :)

Some customers were yelling and screaming while karaoke. Just wanted to leave Genji because of the loud noise.

The decor and fixtures are a bit outdated, besides that, everything was clean and comfy. Service is pretty attentive; my water was constantly filled. For food, my boyfriend and I got the tempura udon, a California roll, and the yaki udon. Everything was really good and cheap! Our food ended up being only $18. My friends ordered a variety of drinks and food and everybody was satisfied with their food. Karaoke started at 9:30 (I don't know if that's the same time for every day); you go up to pick your song from a tablet and then hand the number over to the employee and wait your turn. There are also private rooms you can book for $50 an hour. Overall, I really enjoyed everything and I'm happy to know of a new late night spot I can visit with friends.

Came here for late night food and they also had karaoke! The service was great and the food was yummy! The only thing that the food needed was a sauce for the tempura

I decided to try this place on a whim and was surprised to hear the staff speaking Japanese. The vibe is an old school Japanese Izakaya with a lot of menu items you would see at a place in Japan. I enjoyed the aji fry the most. I will return next time I'm in town perhaps with my Japanese coworkers whom I am sure will appreciate some home cooking.

Whether it’s Astros games or karaoke nights or just solid Japanese food available after work and late night, Genji has been our go to spot for years. Amazing and friendly staff as well as delicious food make this spot a can’t miss.

The sushi wasn't the freshest but the wait staff was nice and the prices were incredibly reasonable. It was happy hour and the rolls were more than half off in price! I'd go back again if I were looking for a cheap quick eat or bringing a larger group of people.

My favorite real Japanese restaurant at karaoke bar, in the greater Houston area. The prices are reasonable, has karaoke in the main dining room and in the five private karaoke rooms.

It’s often busy every time I come here, but the servers are nice. Some people might think the restaurant looks kind of run down, but I find that it’s reminiscent of my homeland. I actually really like the sushi here too and the omurice is pretty satisfying, especially after drinking!
