Good place to be if you are looking for good non vegetarian Asian food. Not a great place for vegetarians as very few options if you consider sea food as non veg! They have outdoor seatings too. Their dumplings sauce is pretty good.
My only complaint about this place is that I can not rate it a 6. It truely deserves it. From the moment my wife and I came in the service was was great. We were seated immediately and given time to look over the menu. The waitress answered all our questions politely and patiently. We started out with an order of pan fried pork dumplings. They were very good. My wife ordered the almond chicken asparagus. It was tender moist pieces of chicken with asparagus, sun dried tomatoes and sliced almonds over brown rice. My wife absolutely loved it. I had the fire bird chicken. It was chicken sautéed with chili pepper, scallions and bamboo strips. It was spicy, but overly so.. I could not get enough of it. My wife and I both agreed that this was the best meal that we have had together in our 36 years of marriage. We only regret that we live almost 200 miles away. Non the less, we will be back.
Nothing Compares!. Hands down the BEST house made dumplings and noodles you will get anywhere in KC. The staff is also fantastic and knowledgable about the menu and drinks. Give it a try!
A true delight! This is a family owned chain of 2 locations in KC. I usually go to the one by KU med, so this was the first time for me here... Same taste and quality. This location is more suburban, obviously with a parking lot and in the middle of higher end chains and shops. From the art work on the wall for sale, to the well educated and kind staff, I just love the atmosphere! I ordered the chicken/ tofu and brown rice in black bean sauce, and almost ate the whole thing. Portions a big, and this dish , while marked with 1 " chile pepper" for spicey, has a kick while hot, and as it cools the sauce turns into a sweet taste. It a "harmonious" mix of savory and sweet... Not for everyone, but is my favorite dish. Also ordered the pork steamed dumplings and they were slightly off their taste, kinda rubbery. But I won't condemn them for one minor dish being off one time, after so many previous wonderful meals!!!!
Hands Down: Favorite Asian Food in the KC Metro Area. We have been eating regularly at the Blue Koi for years, having first gone to the original location on 39th Street and then migrating over to the Leawood location due to its proximity to our house. The owners are regularly there; they have seen our kids grow up.
Watching the cooks at Blue Koi is in itself an amazing experience. These guys are masters at the art of sauteing, frying, roasting, and braising, and they work as a team, much like a dance troupe. We always sit at the bar to watch them work.
The food is creative, comforting (the restaurant's claim to fame), and consistently excellent. The firebird duck is my favorite, with a super-spicy sauce that coats the duck and the green onions and sings out. It's kind of a rough feel on the tongue, as if the spices were fresh, hand-ground. The noodles are fantastic, and if you wish for brown rice, the portions are pleasing. Also a favorite is the braised tofu which comes in an unctuous brown soy gravy with lots of mushrooms. The dumplings are fantastic, be they pan-fried or boiled. My kids swear that the bubble tea here is the best that they have had, and they have had a lot.
This place has expert service with friendly waitstaff and greeters (often the owners). The food is delicious, and although it's pricey, it's because the quality of ingredients is superb, food is made to order by that great team of cooks, and you will get enough for a meal the next day. I can't speak more highly of this restaurant.
Pretty good. I know, unbelievable I hven't been here but I was never that wild about the one on 39th but, my husband had never been to either so I was up to giving it a shot, AND, not bad. Both of us enjoyed our meals, started with eggplant pockets which I did like from the 39th St location. Husband had duck and I had chicken/asperagus. Good enough that I'd go back and the decor is really nice also-service was great.
I really like this place. My favorite is the Tofu with Black Bean Sauce with brown rice. Delicious!
This restaurant is one of our favorites. We've been to both the Westport and leawood locations. We love them both. The overall experience is fabulous from start to finish from being greeted, seated, drink order is taken quickly, food is fantastic and bar none value for what you pay. It's very reasonable for such a wonderful package of service and enjoyable dining.
The Wild Cod Special truely is. The “Wild Cod”, pan seared in Saki with Asian spices is really very good. It is not on the regular menu but rather is offered as a special about every six weeks (according to the owner who was walking around chatting with customers). It was served over white rice with a side of sautéed carrots, asparagus and baby shitake mushrooms. (see image) I ordered it with the suggested wine pairing which really complemented the flavors of the meal. Nice.
Best, Authentic Chinese in KC area!. Where do I start? My first visit (over 5 years ago) I was surprised at first glance of the menu- it didn't have combo lo mien or even general tso chicken like EVERY "chinese" restaurant! What?! That's because it's authentic & has real Chinese dishes made by the owner Scott's own family that have been passed down for years (or so he said). Over the years of trying out everything, my spouse & I have decided the Black Bean Chicken, Chinese Curry Shrimp (a sweet/spicy yellow curry), Ants on a Tree (noodles & diced chicken), Vegan Dumplings, & China Moon are hands down the best Chinese dishes in the city. Service is fast & our servers over the years have made the right recommendations that keep us coming back. Even better than the infamous Bo Lings. If you want something other than carry out "chinese" items, try them out- you won't regret it!
I would kill anyone that stood between me and these dumplings - they're that good. The soups are huge and really well seasoned. Duck wrap is great, as is the tofu appetizer (the official name escapes me). Highly recommend!
Very good dumplings and pot roast noodle soup! And don't forget the "Awesome sauce"!
Best Dumplings in the JOCO area. I have been to both locations of this place, and this is the more upscale location, which is fine because I live closer to this one.
There is no difference in food quality between either location, as I have eaten at both, and they both possess the best dumplings in the Metro.
There are competitors like "Po's Dumplings" and they aren't quite as good in my opinion.
My wife and I love this place, and when we crave dumplings, we go here.
Delicious. Food was really good and so was the service. I ate the Black Bean Shrimp with noodles, very good and especially liked the veggie dumplings and China moon (marinated inced shrimp in crispy flat bread) starters.
Fun and good. Dinner with friends and children, no issues whatsoever.
We had great service and the menu was fun with a lot of options. I would return.
Amazing Food!. The potstickers, noodles, pot roast, and black bean tofu are all so fabulous I haven't ordered anything else. I just can't get enough!
My Favorite!. Blue Koi has been a favorite of my family's since we first tried it a few years ago. We have had excellent service at both locations. We were told the Westport location was always crowded, but I have never found that to be the case any time I've been there.
The only reason we don't go to this restaurant more is because both locations are about a 30 minute drive. Wish there was one closer!!
My family is vegetarian, except for my husband, who is vegan, and this is one place where we can all get something wonderful to eat. Almost every item on the menu can be ordered meat free, with tofu, and all the sauces are already vegan, so no need to worry there. I have only been disappointed by one dish I ordered there, which was some kind of seafood soup.
I could not decide which is better, Black Bean with tofu, or the curry variety. Awesome sauce is awesome. Bubble tea is great, all the flavors I've tried have been outstanding, and the bubbles make it fun!
A place we go back to over and over!
Blue Koi is a Great place to eat! From the owners, servers, food and atmosphere - This is simply a great place to eat. I recommend to anyone. They are gluten free friendly and love to accomodate!
Love the new location. Been dining at the 39th St location since they opened. That space is so cramped, esp on weekends. I love the spaciousness of the Leawood location. The food remains just as good. Love the shrimp, pork dumplings, duck wrap, ants on a tree, and pot roast on noodles. Truly authentic Taiwanese food!
Excellent Service, good food!. The service I received from Angelo at Blue Koi was amazing! I haven't gotten such great service in a long time. If you go here you should defiantly sit in his section. He told us what foods or drinks he thought were good and he was right. He made the whole night better.
Our waiter suggested the green bean (like vanilla bean) bubble tea with a shot of Kahlua, AMAZING! He brought us out the awesome sauce with our dumplings and said since we liked spicy we should add a few drops of hot sauce to it. I thought the awesome sauce has a well deserved name, it was fantastic.
The entree's are quite big and I was easily able to split dumplings as an appetizer and then split an entree. I had the Fire bird which was very tasty, you can choose between chicken or duck and I chose duck. It was very tender and was good and spicy. Not suggested for someone who does not like spicy food.
All in all I had an excellent time at Blue Koi and will defiantly go back. Even if the food wasn't great I would go back just for the service it was so top notch.
Yum!. First, the rave: Wow! The shrimp steamed dumplings are the best dumplings I have ever had. What an amazing treat.
The other appetizers on the menu are good as well, but the dumplings are the best in town and the best I have ever had through my many travels.
They are famous for their pot roast, but this is definitely not my favorite item. It is tender, but not as flavorful as I expected.
They have bubble drinks at Blue Koi, too! Definitely a fun touch.
The atmosphere is very pleasant and the service was friendly and fast.
Love this place and can go more often at the new location. The awesome sauce and tofu is great. Actually, everything is. The bubble tea is a spaecial treat-green bean is my favorite.
Delicious but expensive for lunch. I tried the Chinese pot roast with noodles, and it was absolutely delicious. The flavor of the meat was unbelievable. It was so good I may need to try making something similar at home.
The noodles were good but didn't have much flavor on their own, but once mixed with the meat an a little Sirracha it was good to go. There isn't much in the way of vegetables in this dish or, really most the dishes by the look of things, but you can add a side of veggies. Unfortunately, this side of vegetables costs $5 so I did without.
The service was also very good. Overall I really enjoyed my experience at Blue Koi, but I'd have a hard time going there too often for lunch because of the price. If I could have given 3.5 stars I would have based on the $12+ price for my lunch, but, damn, that Chinese pot roast tasted great!
One of the many things I appreciate about Blue Koi is that there is something on the menu for everyone–carnivore, vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free. If you want a slight twist on a dish, such as trading veggies for mushrooms, they are happy to accommodate your preference. Scott and Mindy Chang will do whatever it takes to satisfy your cravings at any given moment. Their warm, inviting presence in the restaurant is a sign of their pride and enthusiasm for their family recipes from Taiwan and China.
This week I went to a dinner meetup of the #BlogKC group at Blue Koi. Gatherings like this can be hard for gluten-free folks, not all restaurants are accommodating or aware of our needs. Add to that the challenge of a group of 20+ people ordering at the same time and the potential for being served gluten-full food is high. Blue Koi is a beautiful exception to this. I had an amazing gluten-free, vegetarian meal with a group of fun bloggers. Before I was gluten-free, I liked eating at Blue Koi because the menu has always been clearly marked for vegetarians. Now I request their special "allergy" menu that lists items containing peanuts as well as a few other allergens. The bottom 2/3 of the menu is dedicated to wheat/gluten free menu items, detailing what substitutions should be requested. There are 3 or 4 entrees that are both gluten-free and vegetarian, in addition to a couple of starters. It is truly easy to order gluten-free and vegetarian at Blue Koi. On this visit to Blue Koi,
I told her I thought that the fish special was fantastic. She was pleased and explained that it was her own creation. I told her the only thing I didn’t like about it was that it wasn’t available all the time.
