We've been here a few times, but finally remembering to post a review this time! We sat outside on the patio this past visit because we brought our dog along with us. The outside patio was a cute little space with heaters. The food was delicious as always, and staff were very friendly. The server even told us about his childhood dog so it was a nice connection. I recommend eating inside when you can though because it's a cool old school vibe. Also, the hot chocolate was amazing and a lot bigger than expected!
Just moved to the area and wanted to try this place out. The service was awesome. My waiter was friendly and the food came out fast. I got the corn beef hash with house potatoes and it was great! Definitely want to come back.
As a fan of the long ago show, One Day at a Time, I tend to eat at Mel's whenever I'm in the neighborhood. The day before yesterday was one of those days.
The service was efficient and friendly, and the food, organic and delicious. I had the 4 cheese grilled cheese sandwich on sourdough bread. It was delicious, but it could have been better if the chef had used port wine cheddar instead of ordinary cheddar cheese. Chef, please email me when you make the suggested change in the recipe for grilled cheese sandwiches. I'll come back and re-review the grilled cheese sandwich. I also had a cup of meatball soup. It was outstanding.
There's free parking and outdoor seating with a peaked canvas roof. It's entirely open on all four sides, an ideal arrangement during a pandemic. This restaurant is accessible to differently abled patrons.
If you're in Sherman Oaks at mealtime, I recommend Mel's Drive-in on Ventura Blvd.
I ordered Chili Cheese Fries as an appetizer and ordered the short rib Grilled Cheese sandwich. My partner ordered the Mel's Cheeseburger. The food was pretty delicious. It was fresh, fries were crispy and so was the grilled cheese bread.
It was busy so there was a wait but nothing too bad. You can listen to the music playing in the background while you wait!
I love the ambience of this place. It just makes you happy. Recommended.
I tried coming here before and there wasn't any parking on the lot so I left. This time I came on a Wednesday night with my kiddo and there was plenty of parking. The place is really cute as it tries to keep the old school diner atmosphere. But on the other hand the food isn't old school, kinda a little higher end than your traditional diner. Prices for dishes range from about $18 and up which is high for a diner.
I got the patty melt. It was cool. Had great flavor just wasn't as melted as I would like. Got my daughter the kids breakfast. She like the French toast. I actually tried her French toast and I was rather tasty and had good flavor. The "adult" meals were pretty expensive but the kids meals were really reasonable like $5 or less. So great place to bring small kids for the price.
We also shared a milkshake. Pretty good milk shake too and the give you a lot. Overall, cool place to come if you're in the valley.
I would come back just not too often.
Passed by this place thousands of times I’ve the past decade and never stopped by. I’m happy that I finally did stop! Ordered the Patty Melt with curly fries! It tasted great and fries with ranch really hit the spot! The staff are super friendly and the pictures on the wall and music box at each table gives it a very old school vibe that you used to see in the movies. Place is also kid friendly and they have drawings and coloring pencils for kids. Since the COVID they added an outside seating area which is really nice if the weather is not too hot. I just have to mention the niceness of the staff! They come and actually have a conversation with you unlike most places that the waitress just brings the food and runs off to the next table.
The food is excellent. Customer service is fantastic. Our 1st time being in here. We love it. Thank you
🍜 Food:
The food was delicious, my order hit the spot. We had breakfast, their burgers looked good also, so we are going back soon.
👩💼Service:
Very friendly staff, they seem to be great at their jobs.
🏠 Atmosphere:
Simply a cool looking diner, one of the best in Los Angeles. Great place to visit for an authentic American diner experience.
💸 Price:
They have fair value menu items, I wouldn't complain in this department. You get what you pay for.
I’ve been going here since I was a kid. The food is solid and the service is always excellent. Can’t really beat a classic!
Note: I especially appreciate the extra fast service today when I was in a bit of a rush. The newer outdoor seating might not give thing classic diner feel, but nice to enjoy the LA weather!
All American classic 50's diner with amazing high-quality food that is well prepared and delivered with 5 star service! Surprisingly, there are even vegan milkshake options!
Amazing american dinner. Good food. Coffee refills and great service
Love Mels drive in style, a must stop to eat in LA. Deserts and shakes are definitely worth it, love the vintage and retro coin machine juke boxes!
Don’t recommend the turkey plate that I took the last time as it was not as great and a bit filthy with a bunch of sauce-cheese or something but yeah!
Cool visit on our day off, will visit soon.
Everything was great! The decor brought you back to the 50s, nice. The restaurant was so clean and outside was very clean. I was passing thru from airport to one hour north of Mel's Diner. I will revisit my next trip.
Great breakfast. I got over easy eggs with hash browns well done bacon and an English muffin. He got short rib grilled cheese and loved it!
They allowed my crazy dog! I love this place. Ge the chicken pesto sandwich. So delicious! Topped off with a malt vanilla shake, so yummy.
