Reviews Petty Cash Taqueria & Bar

The weekday happy hour at Petty Cash (a Taqueria) runs Monday through Friday, 5pm – 7pm and for $6 a pop, the margaritas are well worth it. Oh, and this is pretty cool, at the bottom of the happy hour menu you’ll notice a little message with an asterisk that says: “Take a shot/Get a shot”. I asked the bartender what that was about, of course. Basically, if you take a picture of your happy hour experience at Petty Cash and post it on Instagram (show the bartender proof), you a free shot. Boo-yah! Tequila for me-yah!

The real margarita was awesome and the carne Asada taco was the best. Also had the Al pastor and the beef tinga tacos. The guacamole is amazing!

The mural above the door is welcoming. It’s Grandma or Mama calling you inside.

Yes, Petty Cash Taqueria is on the westside. It’s unnaturally close to El Coyote. (Seriously, the average person can fling a baseball and at least hit the parking lot.) But where El Coyote is has the market cornered on old-world, old-school Tex-Mex, Tex-Cal style and food, Petty Cash is doing the whole Food Truck thang…only indoors. In a nice space.

Modern Mexican food in a hip ambiance 😎 service was a little bit slow but food and drinks were good overall- Bluefin tuna tostada was very well seasoned and Al pastor taco was absolutely delicious! Personally I don’t take cilantro but apparently it was here and there everywhere so that was my challenge point tho 🙄

At $7-$8 per taco, this isn’t a place I’d go everyday. With that said, I do recommend this place for their freshly made blue corn tortilla (and I don’t even like corn tortilla). My favorite tacos were the octopus and fish. I also love their version of a Paloma. They serve complimentary fresh chips with decent salsa. I don’t recommend the Brussels sprouts - nothing extraordinary. Seating is hard to come by without a reservation. Expect to wait an hour. Parking: Hit or miss. It might be worth it to just valet park.

I would call this place a hidden gem. You might think it's just a sport bar or a bar, it's not. The food is really great and my group loved the tacos and guacamole. Maragaritas are mixed just right. Chips are warm, fresh and tasty. Al Pastor tacos are a must have.

Super hip and easygoing atmosphere with friendly staff and great food. It’s got it all. As an added bonus, they have made a good adjustment to the COVID situation. I strongly recommend the cauliflower nachos as a starter — So good! Their fish tacos (baha fish and octopus) were stars too!

The place had a very good vibe, a bar & restaurant great for a good time with a group of friends. Had the Al pastor taco and it taste amazing, the dirty horchata is not bad, probably would get alcohol instead. Price is normal for a bar, the a bit pricey end.

Petty cash is one of my favorite places. The potato taquitos are the absolute best. I love that they use blue corn tortillas for their tacos. Service also top

This was a cool new taqueria that I visited and I enjoyed the best Al pastor taco, complete with a slice of piña, and an order of chips and salsa - I loved the presentation! I sat at the bar, next to another first timer - heard the birria was delicious he wanted to keep the broth for dipping! My service from the staff was exceptional, friendly and professional - my server was knowledgeable about the menu. Luis, Erli, Kennedy and her team were attentive and helpful. I’ll be back! Truth be told, the flan was the best I’ve ever had - creamy, rich with flavorful caramel sauce - yummy and decadent!

Loved petty cash! Perfect for a fun dinner with a big group - super lively, food options for everybody, great drinks, and reasonable prices. Don’t miss the cauliflower nachos or butternut squash taco!

I really enjoyed the unique flavors and combinations at this place! The food was definitely solid. The service was a little slow on the night we visited, but it was a pleasant experience nonetheless. The taco prices are a smidge high, even considering the area, but the food was definitely good.

Walter Manzke is one of L.A.'s most respected chefs, a fine dining titan who has labored in the kitchens of Alain Ducasse and Ferran Adrià. Manzke's style is modernist cuisine and cutting-edge haute cooking, first at Bastide, and then Church & State and République. It may thus be surprising for you to learn that such a chef decided to open a taco spot, even a posh one like this, until you find out he grew up in San Diego taking trips to Tijuana to eat tacos. Petty Cash Taqueria is kind of a love letter to Baja California's tacos. And, yet, Manzke has played with them conceptually: Al Pastor Tacos in Tijuana are different than they are everywhere else. For one, they're called "Tacos de Adobada" there, and secondly they leverage avocado sauces rather than chunks of pineapple. At Petty Cash Taqueria, the "Al Pastor Taco" gets both guacamole and a big slice of pineapple. The result is a harmoniously-built taco, both sweet and rich, with savory, crunchy pork shaved off the trompo behind the bar, sauced with a biting salsa roja, and served on top of a sturdy corn tortilla made in-house with fresh blue masa procured from L.A. corn-monger "Kernel of Truth," a high-quality GMO-free operation that I also noted in my recent review of La Jolla's Puesto. Petty Cash Taqueria's "Pork Belly Carnitas Taco," while not as successful, was interesting. Little chunks of pork belly are cooked in fat, then smothered with guacamole and a "sweeter than you'd expect" salsa verde. It's not unpleasant, even if surprisingly low-key. The "Baja Fish Taco" is where they lost me for a moment. It is stacked with too much cabbage and pico de gallo for the size of the tortilla. You can't close the taco. In Baja California, it is important for the ends of the tortilla to be able to fold over the fillings and either be able to touch or face each other in a taco. Chef Manzke should know better, growing up where he did. Also, I don't believe rockfish to be mild enough for a proper Baja-style fish taco, nor do I believe that the batter on a fish taco should ever be "chewy" as it was here. The overall flavor of it was alright, but I'm not sure I'd eat this fried fish taco over one at Rubio's on most days, which is problematic since I paid $7 for this fish taco. I much enjoyed the "Charcoal Grilled Octopus Taco," where the browned octopus comes on its requisite blue tortilla chopped into bits both crispy and tender. This is the most ambitious taco I had here: there's melted cheese, there's a puddle of a roasted arbol salsa roja, there's a big slice of avocado from San Diego, and then there are these pickled red onions on top that are heavily acetic, slightly sweet, and infuse aggressive heat into the taco. The onions are essential in making everything work.

Not just the best Margerita, but I think the best alcoholic drink I’ve ever had! (Pineapple Marg with mezcal). Potato and fish tacos were awesome too.
