Lunch with hubby at the newly opened restaurant Holbox located in Mercado La Paloma. Same owners of Chichén Itzá Restaurant in same location. Very excited when I found out they were bringing a seafood restaurant to this locale because it's owned by Gilberto Cetina and because of his success with his current restaurant I was certain he'd have a hit venturing in seafood. We ordered the yellowtail tacos and the octopus tacos cooked in its ink. Both were amazingly delicious with lots of flavor. I added a little bit of their freshly made dark chili salsa which added a little kick. We also ordered a shrimp cocktail and an octopus cocktail. The juice used in their cocktails is 99.9% similar to how they are made in the Yucatán, sweet flavor with chopped onions and avocado garnish. Mine had a whole shrimp added for presentation which you can peel and enjoy! The cocktails come with saltine crackers which is a typically condiment for the cocktail. Our drinks of choice were fresh agua de naranja which was very refreshing. Complimentary chips and fresh salsa given when we sat down at the counter. The counter setting had a nice friendly feel also reminiscent of the Yucatán when you go to El Centro and sit on a stool to have your meal prepared in front of you. Will definitely be back to try other items! Congratulations on a great restaurant!
The shrimp cocktail was the best cocktail. For once I didn’t have to add any ingredients to give it flavor.
Holbox seafood restaurant is just great! Fish tacos, lobster tacos, ceviche, shrimp cocktails and other items I have tried from their menu have been extra good and super, super fresh, so fresh that is prepared right in front of your eyes. The tall Cocktail is my favorite since it has lots and lots of mixed seafood in its red delicious juice topped with a huge prawn! Holbox has excellent flavors, textures and good size servings and a relaxed atmosphere for all to enjoy. I highly recommend it!
Absolutely excellent food! Fresh, delicious, appetizing, original, creative, beautiful looking. The sauces are so light and refreshing! Definitely one of the best seafood dishes have had in a long time. And the Chef is super nice, friendly. Overall a great experience. Can’t wait to go back for more!
One of the best places in LA to eat seafood in a quaint little marketplace that's unbeknownst to most.
Excellent ceviche, fish and octopus tacos and breaded shrimp sandwiches. The prices are great and you can sit at the counter and watch them prepare the food.
Had the empanadas and the rock fish fillet plate. Both were fabulous. My wife had the ceviche mixto and the Ensenada tacos, both of which she loved. My buddy had the yellowtail collarwhich looked great. Looking forward to going back soon.
What a gem! Chef Gilberto and his professional staff serve fresh seafood influenced by the cuisine of the Yucatán. Everything is delightful and delicious.
There are very few places that serve cuisine from Yucatan - this one comes from the people that run Chichen Itza. Mayan seafood cuisine! So good! You better come early or they might run out of what you want! Try the shrimp cocktail for sure!
Love this place. Staff is helpful in helping you decide which of the great dishes you want. Food is fresh and delicious.
I had the whole Bronzino today. Out of this world!!!!
Excellent seafood! The only thing missing is the beach!
The food is fresh and well prepared. If you are ever in the area stop by and check it out. Friendly and prompted service.
Holbox is a slice of seafood heaven!!!
The food here is outstanding. I love the Fish Tacos, scallops and ceviche.
Casual and delicious! Seafood is super fresh and sweet. Definitely great quality. I really recommend the scallops. They were my favorite by far. It’s very casual and a bit pricey for he location they are at but I’ll excuse it for the freshness of the ingredients.
Absolutely the best seafood based Mexican food in LA. All the food on the menu is delicious, flavorful and fresh. Reasonable price, generous portions and the staff are very knowledgeable too. We really love this place and it's worth traveling from Santa Monica through the traffic only for the food here.
Located inside a food court. There is a small free gated parking lot, but there's also free street parking.
This place is amazing. Super friendly service. All the ingredients are super fresh.
Ordered the mixed ceviche, fish taco, and shrimp taco.
OMG!!! They're were all extremely flavorful and yummy.
There are so many items on the vast menu that I would like to experience.
Highly recommend. Would definitely be going back again.
Holbox is an exceptional restaurant for the price.
The food is delicious, plated beautifully and fastidiously prepared. The staff are knowledgeable, courteous and efficient.
We order the seafood stew and 3 types of exotic tacos (one had scallops) and they were all delicious. Halfway through the meal we were planning when we would eat there again. Yeah it was that good.
Halbox lived up to its reputation.
My experience to this restaurant was perfect 100 percent. Good food and the The combination of seafood with sauces and soups was very good. I recommend that you try everything. That is if they don't sell any liquor here but a good place to go eat alone or with friends or with your partner. There are different prices and flavors. Also many tables to sit and they bring your food to the table. I went 2 times but one of them I went alone and I spent about $90.00 including the tip
Stumbled upon this place after California Science Center and was stunned at the quality of the fish here. The most incredible ceviche I’ve had and amazing fish & shrimp tacos. 100% planning to come back.
I was in LA for 2 days and my gf insisted we go here. It was very worth it. I sat at the bar and you could see how carefully the chefs prepared the fish. The uni ceviche was super fresh and the smokes kanpachi was the best taco I’ve ever had in my life.
Fresh ingredients at reasonable pricing. The tacos here have a seafood freshness that seems to be missing from other local establishments. Nowhere else have we seen hanging whole tuna carcasses, feels like an aged steak fridge.
The service was quick. The ambiance was lively.
Could have been an off day but this was not a Michelin star experience. I'd have given it a 3.5 if Google had better rating system. Food was a 3. I had the lobster. Langosta al Carbon. It was ok. Dry, overcooked a bit. Good not great and for 90 bucks, a pretty big disappointment . Wife had the Collar and said it was also good, very good but not wow. It was fine but for the price..... Our guest had the Sopa de Marisco and if I go back that's what I'll have. She said it was excellent. This place is a good restaurant but it wouldn't make any top whatever list for me like it does all the local magazines. Service was great and I love the Mercado Paloma itself. Oh, the Ceviche was outstanding. That's my thumbs up recommendation.
In a trendy food court, which depending on your feeling, may be good or bad. If you get lucky to sit at the counter the vibe is a bit better than sitting randomly in the establishment.
Either way, the food is quite special and not at a completely unreasonable price. Especially for those just getting into fish tacos, this is a good way to start
