I came here tonight with a friend who highly recommended Matsumoto as her favorite omakase in LA. Definitely did not disappoint. A very pleasant experience - good service, excellent fish, and a good ambiance. Very unassuming location, but really comfortable inside. Would definitely come back! We had a special seikogani (female snow crab) and it was fantastic!
Exceptionally friendly staff and I cannot recall the last time I had fish if that quality. Cannot recommend enough for fans of the LA sushi scene. Omakase left me pleasantly stuffed with more variety of fish than my guest and I would need to remove our shoes and gloves to count all the wonderful nigiri we were served. Outstanding quality
Sushi was excellent. With each course the types of fish was elevated to a new level. I felt pressured to hurry up and eat with the speed of the other people at the bar who were having omakase aswell. I shouldn't have...the chef was very willing to serve everyone at their own pace. Thank you for that. Service was extremely attentive, your empty plate had no time to nestle on the table. I found the use of Yuzu a bit too much in the various courses. Yuze has such a pungent flavor that it tends to overtake all other flavors. The rice and fish were sometimes lost. The restaurant is spotless and run like a very well oiled machine. Sushi is serious stuff here. If you want no nonsense real Sushi without gimmicks/fads then this is the place to go. You won't be disappointed.
Best Nigiri in an Omakase ever. The chef has the highest quality fish, which is directly shipped from japan. Because of the experienced chef we had an exceptional tasty and flavourful omakase. The skills of this chef in preparing the perfect nigiri were amazing.
**Takeout experience** Hubby and I ordered from here for our anniversary. We got the sushi and kaiseki omakase and also the Matsu's special bento box. I guess it's because we didn't get to experience being at the restaurant and enjoying the real omakase experience so it didn't feel worth the pay. Sushi was pretty good and fresh (I personally love the uni cause that's just my fav). Kaiseki's were really delicious, think we both enjoyed the corn tofu the most.
However, hub's and I enjoyed the bento box more than the omakase lol. It's a good deal and good amount of food.
Would totally eat-in and experience the atmosphere there once this whole pandemic is done with
Closest thing I’ve found to a traditional Japanese sushi joint in LA (I lived in Tokyo for a couple years). Sushi was fresh and delicious. The range of fish options was better than what you’ll find at Nobu for example. Menu is all sushi, either nigiri or hand rolls with one or two exceptions, and then of course miso, edamame, etc. You won’t find spider rolls, California rolls, etc.
Vibe is understated. Come here for the sushi and the service, not the decor.
It’s expensive but that’s what you’d expect in LA. It’s not cheap to fly all that fish in from Tokyo every day! You can go for the omakase option which is $220–250/person. We ordered a la carte and spent about $100/person without drinks.
Matsumoto is perfection. Easily among my very favorite restaurants in LA. It’s unpretentious, always delicious, and there’s never a wait. Excellent service and great sake. If this place ever closes I don’t think I’ll survive.
