This place is amazing and a fresh taste to a boring restaurant scene in Lynchburg. Everything is fresh and made to order!! Me and my wife went in yesterday to check it out, and left stuffed like a Hippo lol. I had the steak and green bean sandwich and she had the steak sandwich. They use ciabatta bread which was absolutely soft as clouds. You might be thinking that steak and green bean, that sounds odd but it was delicious!! We had sweet tea that was made that day and not overly sweet. Yes everyplace has sweet tea, but not this good. We topped it off with some cheesecake that was melt in your mouth. The owner came over and asked us how everything was but I couldn't stop eating lol.. I asked about the Hippo sandwiches and he brought us one out. Super light flaky crust that was handmade and not frozen. We can't wait to go back and try everything on the menu, I have a feeling that I will not be disappointed!! If I could give more stars I would!! You have to go try this place, they won't let you down!!
Everything I tried, was amazing! Started with the cheese, tomato and onion empanada; "a Hippo". Perfection. And the steak and green bean sandwich... WOW! From the marshmallow-soft bread to the hint of cilantro shining through, it was simply awesome and left me wanting another!
And, the cheesecake. Ya gotta have the cheesecake. Rich flavor but not heavy. Fresh-made daily and never frozen, I was told.
The atmosphere was very cozy and homey. It had a cabin retreat kind of vibe. Loved the wood accents and tables.
I recommend this lil' place, highly.
I heard Saturdays have been very busy, so keep that in mind. I came around 3pm on a Monday and almost had the place to myself.
Great service, extremely friendly staff who are eager to please. The food is beyond incredible. The steak and green beans sandwhich is top notch! I highly recommend this place!
Hands down...the best salsa, empanadas, and sweet tea in Lynchburg!!! And the cookies and cheese cake are second to none...run, don't walk. The owners were so warm and attentive, it felt like we were in their home. I cannot rate this place high enough! Thank you for such a GREAT little spot!
Had a bit of a layover while my car was being serviced down the road. Stopped in for lunch and we we're immediately greeted by the owners who are friendly and genuinely glad to have you come in. We all had a sandwiches, chicken salad with cranberries, steak and cheese, and the steak and green bean. My husband was completely bowled over by the steak and green bean sandwich! My son and I also thoroughly enjoyed our meals, and their homemade salsa is on point! Finished off with some of the best chocolate chip cookies I have ever had! We are all still talking about the food and wonderful service and conversation. Thanks for making us feel at home!!!

What a great little restaurant! We were greeted by the owner and from the second we met him he was extremely helpful and outgoing! He explained the entire menu and helped us figure out what we wanted. Since it was our first time there we tried 5 different empanadas (beef/cheese, ham/cheese, shrimp/cheese, pepperoni/cheese (all fried) and a baked chicken/cheese. The fried were our favorite! We also got a steak and green bean sandwich and loved it so much we ordered a second! Our boys loved it all! Will definitely be back for a steak and green bean sandwich soon! Such a fun and different place to go where everything is fresh!
Had a wonderful lunch today! Delicious food, excellent prices, and super friendly service. The cheese and spinach hippo was awesome - the baby hippos were just the right amount of sweetness to top off the meal!!
Steak and green bean sandwich. So strange...yes, but, oh, so good. Also the chocolate chip cookies - amazing. I said I would have a bite... two cookies later... :) Try this place out - you won't regret it!! (super friendly owner and family also!)

I went to the Hippo Cafe today for lunch and I can tell you that it was one of the best lunches I've ever had. The cheese hippo's were really good and I totally recommend that anyone checks this place out
The food was fast, hot, and delicious! Had a beef and cheese empanada and a spinach and cheese empanada, both were great. Salsa was outstanding. The gentleman that took my order was very friendly. Will definitely be visiting again soon!
Just ate at hippos with the family all the food was unreal steak and cheese and green beans sandwich was amazing service was spectacular will definitely be back. Everyone needs to go out and check out this place itβs located in Wynhurst
Went to lunch here today and it was just as good as everyone says. Tried the beef and cheese and tomato, onion hippos, both good. BUT their steak and green bean sandwich was great. The ciabatta bread is soft and green beans were so fresh. The salsa was also delicious. The owners were top notch. Can't wait to go back.
The owner is super friendly. I had a cheese hippo that was really great but the steak and green bean sandwich.... is THE best. It is seriously delicious and the fresh salsa ties all the flavors together perfectly. I will definitely be a repeat customer for this delectable fare!
The beef and cheese hippo is great and the chocolate chip cookies are wonderful. Highly recommend.

I cannot say enough good about Hippos!! And thatβs before I even get to the food! Iβve read really great things about this restaurant and its husband and wife owners, so tonight when I was driving through Wyndhurst trying to figure out supper with the kids and saw their sign, it was perfect. From the moment we walked in the owners were super friendly and engaging. The husband was working the counter and was so excited about the menu and the food his wife creates, it makes you happy just to be there! All of this before we tried anything! We went with the 6 pack of hippos so we could get a little taste of all of the different types - YUUUUUUMMMM! Not sure I could pick my favorite; they were all delicious! And my kids loved them too! They were actually talking about going back before they even tried the food because they liked the owners so much!! We also tried the salsa (fantastic) and some Sweet Baby Hippos (chocolate filled for dessert - oh my!).
Obviously I absolutely recommend this restaurant!! Definitely go try it out!!
The gluten free pasta salad and the steak and green bean specialty sandwich were fantastic. We will eat here every time we come to town.

I was out trying to get some area businesses to donate towards CVRR'S big fundraiser and my husband was with me and we stopped in at Hippos to talk to them and to eat a late lunch as well. This was back in February of 2018. I have really been wanting to try this place located in Wyndhurst. OMG, it was fantastic! I wish we had tried it months ago! And the man that took our order, was the nicest person I think I have ever encountered that works in a restaurant! His wife is nice too. They both own and run it. She's the cook. I wish she could cook for me most of the time!! My husband tried their beef and cheese hippo and I tried the regular beef one that has some onions and egg (hard boiled) in it and both were served with a delicious, homemade salsa on the side. I had a taste of my husband's and I think it was my favorite. My husband loved it! We also got an order of the salsa with chips. The salsa is different than a Mexican salsa, it's a Chilean style. But we sure enjoyed it! I told my husband we got to go to Chile today by enjoying their style of cuisine. I had spotted the yummy looking cookies and probably would have bought at least one, but the owner came up while we were eating our hippos and asked us if we would like to try their homemade cheesecake with a dark chocolate sauce on it in his hand. I said sure! OMG, I think this was the best cheesecake I have ever eaten in my life!! My husband loved it too. I found out you can get different sauces on it. I think if memory serves me he said caramel and definitely strawberry was the other one. They've been open for since June of last year but it sounds like they haven't had much business. Please go by and try this place. You won't be disappointed! Everything is made fresh for you while you wait. Well, not the cheesecake or cookies. They use really fresh ingredients too. The tea was homemade too and good. I got the sweet and it was just right and not too sweet. My husband had a canned drink.
I visited this place today and it was amazing. The owner went over the whole menu with my husband and I and him and his wife were very friendly and attentive. The food was freshly made and extremely tasty. We'll definitely be eating here again.

Hippos is a fantastic authentic restaurant!!!! Everything is made fresh, the food is flavorful, and the atmosphere is homey. The owners are so kind and are passionate about who and what they serve! So happy to have another amazing restaurant on the scene in Lynchburg! Will definitely be visiting Hippos again!
I tried Hippo's today based on reviews I read online. I ordered the steak and green bean sandwich and a beef Hippo (what they call their empanadas). I waited less than 10 minutes for the food to come out and thought that was pretty fast considering there were 3 orders ahead of mine and the cashier/server said that everything is prepared fresh when ordered. The portions were more than fair enough for the price, but the flavor really put it over the top for me. Both items were incredibly delicious and top quality! In fact it was so good, I even thought about going back for dinner. This place will become a regular for me. I really look forward to trying the other offerings there.
The empanadas are amazing - my favorite is the cheese and shrimp one. The owners are so friendly and kind too. Oh, and their cheesecake is one of the best Iβve had to date! We love this place!
Steak and green beans sandwich is amazing. Cheesecake is super fresh and some of the best I've had. The hippos themselves are delicious and great for on the go. Highly recommend.
Wow this place was amazing. The food was VERY delicious and the owner is sooooo incredibly nice. Everything is reasonably priced and the atmosphere is wonderful. The food is prepared for each order and freshly made so everything tastes so good. Theyβre fast at getting the food out to you. Sooo yummy and would highly recommend.
