My husband and I visited McCarthy for the first time and due to the small size of the town and its geographic location, we expected poor food and restaurant options (we're from Los Angeles so our standards for restaurants are pretty high). However, we were shocked by the menu and food quality! We ordered the salmon and Chugach cheesesteak with a miso salad and hand-cut curly fries. Everything was delicious. My husband doesn't like salads very much and he usually dislikes any miso or Asian-flavored salads, but he ate more than half of mine because it was so good! Everything was so flavorful and cooked to perfection. There was also a great beer and wine list to pair. When traveling we try not to go back to the same restaurant twice so we can try a variety of places, but we had to make an exception for this one and ended up back here for breakfast! Again, we were pleasantly surprised with the quality and flavor of the food. We ordered the hummus wrap (I saved half for lunch) and the potatohead burrito, both were very delicious. The coffee and tea were also excellent (and I am a self-proclaimed tea snob). On top of the great tasting food, we enjoyed the surrounding natural environment and chill vibe. The service was also stellar.

You might be thinking "this place is only 5 stars because it's the only food out there" but in reality the food and shockingly the prices would stand up in any Alaskan town or city. The best food I've had in my two week trip and some of the most affordable. We tried the salmon roll, the pulled pork poboy, the curly fries, the two soups on special and the pizzas during our stay, we decided you can't go wrong with any of those options. The one exception (and this is being very nitpicky) everyone in our party thought the garlic on the garlic fries was way too much, so get the regular fries unless you love raw garlic. The desert portions are small but just was good as the rest of the meal. Sitting outside can get buggy so we waited for a seat inside, usually not more than a minute or two.

Had one of the most delicious fish (2nd to a Chilean sea bass at my cousins wedding) with delicious sides here that was unexpected. For the price of 34$ the black? sake cod was buttery, rich and delicious with sushi rice and side of cooked cabbage under teriyaki sauce. It was something I could easily have eaten and paid more for outside of rural Alaska. The service was excellent and great, lively with people of diverse background. We loved the open queerness and acceptance in the atmosphere- my gf and I felt safe and had our bellies fed here The rosemary garlic fries (hand cut curly fries) has potent but yummy garlic! Some might think it a lot but it was fine! Yes I had garlic breath still the next day I kissed my gf LOL but I had brushes my teeth and flossed the night before! -NÚRIA (rose cava)- gf said it was good.

Great food at the remote location ! Had their grilled salmon from today’s special which was amazing. They also have a BF menu but we didn’t get to try that.

Stranded in McCarthy with nothing to do? Go hit up the Potato. Easily the best place to go when in town. We stayed out in Wrangell-St. Elias for 4 days and pretty much everyday, we went to the Potato. In the process we met probably one of the most friendly waitresses you’ll ever meet. She was so accommodating, made lots of conversation, and was very attentive to everyone. The vibe is very nice, the outdoor patio is very spacious, and they have a bunch of friendly dogs around too! The environment overall is very entertaining and accommodating. As for food, everything was fantastic! Their fries however were probably my favorite thing to get there. Fried to perfection. And seasoned super well! I didn’t get very many photos since we were busy having fun with our waitress. Sorry lol. So overall, this has to be the best place to go if you have success in the journey out to McCarthy.

The food was succulent, the staff was excellent, the place is lovely, and you can feel the closeness of the local community just by entering the restaurant. They've got pizzas (from Wednesday to Sunday), burgers, wraps, pitas, and as I mentioned later the staff is willing to adjust any dish (e.g. for picky eaters or vegans)

The Potato is one of my all time favorite restaurants! I come here every time I am in McCarthy and am never disappointed. Awesome staff, a casual, dog friendly environment and amazing food! Their specials and black bean breakfast burritos are my favorite, but everything else is delicious (not a bad thing on the menu)! Great wine and beer list and banging Mac and cheese! If you are lucky enough to be in McCarthy, go here!!!

I've been eating at The Potato for five years, and it's a great experience every time! The quality of the food is consistently amazing and delicious, you can taste the love and dedication to excellence in every bite! Service is prompt and friendly, with a laid back atmosphere. I've tried just about everything on the menu, but my favorites are the salmon roll, cheese steak and the chicken fajita pita. The fries are excellent, especially with the rosemary and garlic! I look forward to my next visit. A big thank you to Reba and the entire crew!!!

Enjoyed some amazing salmon with a group of friends while traveling in the area. The dogs of McCarthy are entertaining and one stood at the restaurant entrance wanting someone to play fetch most of our dinner. Tried the spruce tip ice cream, which was new to us. They told us it was an acquired taste and we weren't sure what to expect... it was fun to try but we couldn't come up with what it actually tastes like.
