Really pleasant old school restaurant. Great food, great service and a nice clientele. I’d forgotten how much I liked this place until a recent visit.
Mortimer's is one of those places I always wanted to go to, but never did for whatever reason. Honestly from the outside it looks a little "eh" so maybe that's what turned me off? Or the fact that it's in East Memphis? I dunno. (Photo borrowed from Mortimer's website.). A few weeks ago, I was working on a list of festive places to have a beer, and my mom suggested I include Mortimer's. She has a retiree group that lunches on a regular basis and they'd just been to Mortimer's. She told me all about the decorations and I was almost sold.
Very nice restaurant. Small and homely, a hidden Jewel off the beaten path.. menu isn't 20 pages long. But what they have is wicked.i had the trout she had the shrimp. The homemade bread rolls were torture. I could have had 20 of them and I wouldn't have ate. 5 thumbs up.
I really love Mortimer's. It's a comfy Cheer's sort of place. Go to their website and read about them if you're into Memphis history. You'll find daily specials on their website, as well. The food is very good. I order the chopped steak almost every visit. It has a fine steak taste; VERY satisfying for any carnivore. Mortimer's has a charming history-a background involving a now gone establishment called Knickerbocker's. Knickerbocker's was famous for their shrimp salad, which is served today at Mortimer's. Mortimer's also has a Big Star wall. Big Star was a very popular Memphis band. Give this restaurant a try. I'm betting you'll like it!
LOVE!. We went for the live music last night and loved the food! They had all local beers on draft...I had the Wiseacre and my husband had High Cotton. We started with the Hot Wings which were fantastic. I got the Salmon which was perfectly cooked and my husband had the Stuffed Gouda Burger which he is still talking about!! Loved the service (we sat at the bar then moved to the patio to eat). Loved the food and beer! Can't say enough good things about this locally owned restaurant! Thanks Mortimer's! We will be back very soon!
LOVED IT!. Great experience at Mortimer's this weekend!! The staff is always so friendly and right when we walked in we felt at home. People were out on the patio which was nice to see now that Spring is arriving in Memphis. My Grilled Salmon was out of this world! My husband got the Mort Burger which was also excellent. He also loved that all the beers they had on draft were locally brewed. We are excited to come try the lunch specials that they serve during the day (especially the fried chicken) and I also found out they have a Prime Rib Special on Monday Nights! If you haven't tried Mortimer's you should. Something to be said for a place that has been a Memphis hot spot for over 30 years! Can't wait to go back!
Felt like encapsulated in the 1980s. Food was fab for home style. I had chicken pot pie and 2 sides ( turnip greens and black eye peas Even the cornbread was great. Glad to rediscover this place!
Hadn't been in the place in a while. It's been updated quite a bit, but still has the old pub feel which I like. Waiter was really personable and the chicken and dumplings were awesome. Not very many places where you can find good home cooked vegetables. Will be stopping by more for the lunch specials.
Great Specials.. Recently I have been enjoying some of the specials offers at Mortimer's.
40 cent oysters on Tuesday and Saturday evenings. The oysters are always fresh and delicious.
Sunday we went for all you can eat crab legs.
The crab legs are served with a side salad, fresh rolls, corn on the cob and a buttery new potato. All for $24.99. The legs were cooked to perfection and seasoned just right.
Now I must return on a Monday for the prime rib special.
Mortimer's offers great food every night of the week. Ask for Kevin for great service too.
Food was awesome. Music was a little loud for early dinner.
Nice place to end my travels. I travel extensively and love to go here straight from the airport after a long week on the road. Mark at the bar always recognizes us and stops for a chat, and rest of the staff is pretty friendly too. The atmosphere reminds me a little of the pubs we used to visit when living in the UK. The inside of the place looks a little like a pub, and like a pub it seems to attract a devoted local group. Food ranges from good to great. I have to say I love the Stuffed Burger with Gouda. And the oysters! They are a great way to kick start the meal when I am in the mood for something before the main. I really like Mortimer's and am glad to see them continue to flourish after so many years.
Great burger. This is my friend's mother's favorite restaurant. We joined her Saturday night and I was impressed. The atmosphere wasn't what I expected. It's nothing more than a bar with some tables and chairs. The food wasn't what I was expecting, either. The burger I ordered was fantastic. Cooked perfectly and served on a toasted sub bun. Very unique and very tasty. I knocked back a few Ghost Rivers with it and left satisfied.
Good Plate Lunch / "Cheers"-esque Bar. Before I decided to get all thrifty, etc., and brown bag it to work, I went to Mortimer's for lunch two or three times a week. The turnip greens are always good, as are the mashed potatoes, as is the cornbread. They also have good burgers and chicken dishes, some of which date back to the old Knickerbocker restaurant on Poplar. Very comfortable dining room (with a PGA-themed dining room off to the side) and a classic bar. Also, there's a fireplace in the bar, but I don't think I've ever seen it lit. Still, a pretty cozy restaurant with a happy variety of very good food.
Do not go if you're a vegetarian, unless you can make do with fish.
Always great. Always have a good experience. Friendly staff, love the bartender that's always there. If you go often he'll always remember your drink of choice. The prime rib is my favorite in the whole city. Cornbread during the day is awesome. Great home cooked lunch specials. Overall good place to eat, drink, or both.
This is my absolute favorite local restaurant. The etoufee is great, the salads are awesome, and in my opinion have the best burger in town. The owner is there often and always very welcoming. The atmosphere is just right. Kid friendly and no smoking. They also have great lunch specials during the week, just like grandma's home cooking from chicken n dumplings, fried chicken, beef tips and rice to grilled salmon. Fresh home cooked veggies as well. Turnip greens are great!
Serves a wide variety of home-cooked style food. Dated interior with wood-paneled walls and various local memorabilia present a cozy atmosphere making it an ideal place to meet and catch up with a friend, or host a gathering in one of their rooms. Large food portions of good tasting food make it a worthwhile place to check out. Service was fast and friendly - - - and patient (we held up ordering until the last of our group arrived some 20 minutes late). I've been there a couple of times and this has always been my experience.
Chill little spot. These chicken tenders were on point! Also pictured is their burger and fries. There aren't many places left to get oysters anymore and they do them justice. Last time I was here, they were enormous. The patio is perfect for a nice evening drink.
Been here many times and never disappoints. Southern comfort food, oysters, sandwiches, salads, they got you covered at a reasonable price. Plenty of local beer on tap, full bar, which is comfortable, and seating all around. Staff is very accommodating and friendly. The only somewhat drawback that can't be helped is the parking, though there is room on the street and a lot across the street (not sure if that is legal though).
My friend and I were shopping at Lowe’s and decided to try Mortimer’s for dinner. I ordered the seafood gumbo as appetizer and Snapper Pontchartrain for my main course, along with a house salad and Italian spinach. The gumbo was excellent. I like a soupy gumbo as opposed to a thick one and this one was all that. The only thing that bothered me was the first bite of the snapper. I got a piece of the skin on the bottom of my first bite. It was tough. Otherwise, the fish was really good. The spinach was really a treat. I love the way it was prepared. I texted my daughter and asked if I could bring her home something and she asked for the french dip. She said it was the best she has ever had. Our server’s name was Anastasia and she was top notch. So overall, a very pleasant experience.
Don't forget about Mortimer's! Great food, great people, great patio, and great drinks. They are still going strong with delicious steaks, seafood, and Cajun fare. We started with the bacon wrapped chicken livers (not my usual choice as I'm not normally a liver fan) and yet they were delicious. The catfish is somehow light and rich, the breading is divine and the portion is generous. The bread for the po-boys is tasty and soft (not scratchy on the roof of your mouth) yet still just the right amount of chewy. The fried oysters have a good clean flavor and were a good size for the sandwich. The red beans and rice are always a great side. Try to leave room for a lemon ice box or fudge pie, you won't be disappointed.
The food was delicious and they were very quick to prepare our food exactly as we requested even though it was a phone in order. We will definitely be returning after all this face mask stuff is over so we can sit down and enjoy the restaurant atmosphere.
We recently visited on a Monday evening and what a gem!! I’ve always loved this place but we live out of town now. We had appetizers and drinks and it was delicious!! Can’t wait to come back.
Food is always good and I've rarely had an issue with service.
Menu is seafood oriented with a Louisiana accent but I've never had a bad dish.
Catfish was good. If the menu said it was beer batter I would have gotten something else. Lots of other great items I would have preferred.
Food was fresh & delicious. We started with libations and baked garlic butter parmesan oysters that were just perfect. My martini was spot on and friends enjoyed local brews. Ask wait staff for offers of brewskis, as some are not listed on menu. Our waitress was friendly & timely. She brought our appetizers well before our entrées came and I must mention the place was very busy. I highly recommend their grilled shrimp & spicy crawfish on dirty rice. It was just the right spicy for a cold night in Memphis! Make sure you splurge and have the fudge pie - it was divine.
I will give it only a 4.5 though, due to the noise of the place where we had to shout to hear each other speak and the crowded room with cramped tables/seats.

I've always loved this place I grew up in the neighborhood glad it's still there took my wife for her bday dinner we had a blast
We went for our annual ladies dinner and had a great time.
The atmosphere says whites only. It was hot where my party sat, no music like the rest of the restaurant. We asked the waitress about it and she said let me see what is going on with it and she never came back. Then we asked about the TV she said there was no remote for it and never came back. My party was a total of 9 people and our bill was $340.00 I think we could have had a little better service. All of the pictures on the walls were of white people. What's wrong with this picture. We stayed and tried to make the best out of it.
The atmosphere is great there. The wait staff was friendly, funny and efficient. The food was served quickly and hot and tasted fantastic. You will not be disappointed!
Great atmosphere. Catfish snack is a good starter complimenting the 2 for 1 draft beers on Sundays! Bartender, Chuck, is patient and attentive.
