I’ve always loved Mexican food. Growing up in San Diego, I was lucky to be exposed to so much authentic Mexican cuisine. Since moving to Pittsburgh several years ago, I was finding good Mexican food to be elusive. My sister told me about a restaurant she had found in Monroeville, El Campesino. She went on to tell me that this was the closest to good Mexican food that he had sampled since leaving the West Coast; I was ready to give it a try.
To me this was the best Mexican restaurant in town. Right from ambiance, theme, menu, taste everything was pure Mexican. I tried Enchiladas and taco. Ended my meal with deep fried ice cream. Overall I enjoyed my food here

I like this place allot prices aren't too bad nice strong drinks waiter i had was awesome! I would definitely come back they make a great chicken soup
We absolutely love El Campesino my husband and I go there monthly, we love the salsa and chips, the guava margarita, and the burrito supremes, every time we go there the service is wonderful and we have never had a complaint! It's the most authentic Mexican restaurant around you have to try it!
Go a la carte. Get the quesdilla fajita a la carte--it's $10, less expensive than the quesdilla fajita dinner, and, you're basically substituting rice & beans for an extra, entire quesidilla fajita. The salsa for the chips is really good. The queso is excellent and artery clogging. It has suffered a little from over-expansion, but I still love it. Great for the family too.
Everyone that says something negative about this restaurant is hating. it's the best Mexican restaurant around!! the food is so good, Monroeville location I think is the best! & all the servers are so friendly!! I love this place!! way better than patron, mad mex!!
Exactly what I expected. 8 items arranged into 50 different combos on the menu :) how can you go wrong? I've been here before and when I get the craving for standard mex food I'll be back.
Great. Probably the best in the area, although since its expansion I think the taste and service has suffered a bit. But still great
This place totally rocks!
Authentic Mexican. I've been going to El Campesino for about 8 years and the food has always been consistent. Everything is very tasty, although some flavors are very similar.
Since they moved their location though I feel like the service definitely went down. The food takes forever to come out. Also, they had a sign up saying they would not split checks after 5 pm. Well excuse me, me and my poor 22 year old friends cannot just pick up the whole party's check.
Overall, a decent place with decent prices.
An old stand by was recently disappointing. I have been going there for over 10 years. When in Monreoville, it was always my favorite place to stop. It was always tops in Mexican food. I compared all other Mexican to this place. My last visit was about a week ago for lunch. I ordered a familiar dish (combo 13) The chili relleno was not as good as usual. The flauta was very skimpy & overcooked. At least the quesadilla was good. I did have some intestinal issues afterward.
I hope that I just went on a bad day. I will be sad if they got too big to not be as good as ther once were.
Have loved them for years. Recommended: bean dip (cheese dip with a layer of beans in the bottom), mole ranchero, burritos tipicos.
Really outstanding is the "Grilled Cazuelada for two" which is basically a mixed fajita with added fresh chorizo... wow is that good! On a special occasion I'll order it for myself and take home two meals' worth.
Their new location is nice looking but the booths feel cramped (or do I grow fatter walking through their doors?), it's noisier, and the service seems less friendly and less available... I hope this situation improves!
Great!. A favorite place of mine. Great dishes! Very fast service and good location
Excellent Food, Average Atmosphere. The reasonable prices make up for the average atmosphere. I've found the service at Robinson's El Campesino to be better than Monroeville's. But the food is outstanding at both locations.
Good Standard Mexican Food - Whaddaya Want?. I admit, I'm a little perplexed when I see bad reviews of El Campesino. I've eaten plenty of Mexican food, here and out west. I honestly can't find anything about which to complain here. My husband and I both really like it, and we both find it to be consistent and good. The service is always friendly and quick, too, and the prices are very reasonable. The cheese dip is the best anywhere and the chili poblano is the awesome. Try the enchiladas verdes, too. Really good.
Not overly spicey. Good food fair price. Skip dessert not so good frid ice cream
Great Mexian food, never had a bad meal there.
JMWW. This place is GREAT! Never had a bad meal here. Sorry Texas, but the Chili you wanted was the Chili Poblano . . . their version of the chili relleno. Had that last weekend, spicy, gooey, just wonderful. Being from California, this is my favorite meixcan place in the Burgh.
The food is delicious but the service is poor.
Consistently good. Nachos are good, hubby loves the shrimp fajitas, I usually get burritos. The best hands down rice side dish anywhere. And the chips and salsa is great too. The marguaritas I really don't like though, way too sugary (even for a marguarita). Stick with a large lemonade, it is just sweet enough to enhance all the great food. And the folks working there are busting butts to get it out so tip well, they are nice guys.
Great Mexican in an area that wouldn't have a clue. We have been eating at El Campesino since January of 1998. The food is excellent and is more typical of tex-mex cuisine. Authentic Mexican food is much more crude than what you will find at El Campesino. The owners are from Mexico and have endured many insults and racial epithets directed at them by the people of Monroeville. Even so, they have put together an excellent Menu with absolutely supurb service. The Monroeville restaurant was their first and they have gone on to open restaurants in Altoona, South Hills, Cranberry, and Irwin.

The food here was good and the service was friendly and prompt. This place has a lot of seating available and a huge parking lot.
Is it the best in Pittsburgh for this kind of food? No, it's certainly not and there is better available but this place was above average and they have a very wide variety of menu options sure to please every person at the table.
We didn't order any alcoholic beverages but they had a pretty extensive list of options for people who enjoy those kinds of drinks.
In terms of regular drinks they serve Pepsi products as well as orange juice and milk.
I would not repeat as there is better not far away from here but honestly if your close to this place and deciding if you should go based on the reviews you will certainly not be disappointed by your experience here.
I'm terms of price my family of four was 140 after taxes and tip and that was without any alcohol so if you have 4 people who get full meals with ice cream added on that's roughly what you will spend but that is pretty much the norm these days so it's right in the middle of affordability.
I 100% recommend this place. I went on a Saturday night and even though it was so busy they sat us right away. As soon as we ordered they bought out the food so quickly. Loved the food and loved the service. 10/10 perfect for families, a fun date, or even a place to hang out with friends. I will definitely be coming back.
My absolute favorite restaurant! My family and I eat here frequently and I’ve never left disappointed. I highly recommend the shrimp tacos. Not only is the food A+ but the staff is top notch. Welcoming, friendly, efficient service every single time we’ve eaten here.
Best Mexican food I've ever had. And I continue to eat here. And take out is a wonderful option . Always on time. Hot and ready. Boom!
The best Mexican food Pittsburgh has to offer! I travel a lot for work and I always try to find the best local spots. The restaurant is very clean and the staff are friendly and helpful.
To the person[s] that thinks Taco Hell is better, you obviously don't know Mexican food.
I can't speak for the entire menu as this was my first visit. The dish I had (chile colorodo) was deliciously spicy that awoke my taste buds! I highly recommend this if you like spicy food. I can't wait to eat there again!
By the way...
My bill was high, but only because I had 5 of my favorite beers (Sol) and 1 tequila (1942) along with my meal!
Friendly service, good food, nice atmosphere. We drop in about once a month or so. Good chips & salsa. Comfortable bar to sit at. We have enjoyed many of their entree combos and they don't disappoint. Ample parking and an easy entry way.
I think this restaurant has closest thing to authentic Mexican food in Pittsburgh. The ingredients were fresh and top quality as well as being properly prepared! Service was friendly and efficient. I will come back! Also, I had the opportunity to practice my Spanish which was accepted graciously by my " camerero"! A pleasurable experience in general!
