Exceptional flavor and wonderful decor. If tacos were a single dollar cheaper I would spend hours eating here.
The Barbacoa and Carnitas tacos are amazing, highly recommend.
Got myself a nice mushroom taco today and it was superb. The flavor was so good, the spices were very prominent, the corn tortilla was fresh, the salsa had a nice balance of salt and lime, and there was nothing simple about this mushroom taco, as basic as it sounds. The one critique I have is the fact that they dont accept cash, I know this is a common practice in local eateries, I was just thrown off, but other than that there was nothing I'd change.
The tacos are pretty good. The chips and salsa is really good. I love the kiosk ordering process. The venue itself is pretty neat. I ate my tacos off of a plate that had a pen drawing of the human heart....not the "I love you" heart, but an actual human heart....it was cool!
We absolutely LOVE cult taco! Where to begin; well first of all, the food is absolutely delicious! The flavor profiles are on par to win the best tacos in California in my opinion. I’m retired military and have traveled across the country and these tacos are my favorite, minus the fish tacos in Seattle. Secondly, the owner is the most genuine person you can come across. My husband and I would frequent cult taco on the daily, and the owner took the time to get to know us on a personal level; where he actually offered to do a fundraiser for my second upcoming vascular surgery. Moral of the story is this, if you want bomb tacos and a great atmosphere, go to cult taco!
Did a taco tour while traveling Monterey and went to a bunch of places trying all their fish tacos. Ran in the door 5 minutes before closing and the sweet girls made me tacos anyways. Let me tell you these were the best tacos by far. Great customer service and amazing tacos. Their taco sauce is drinkable
Sooo good!
If I joined a cult for tacos this would be it. Super savory food, delicious margaritas, and a laid-back environment await. A little pricey but there is still value there. They pipe in interesting & fun surf shack music to boot!
Excellent food. My wife's dish was incredible.
Be wary though. Under the taco menu, there's a taco called "Beyond". The description claims it's a cilantro, onion and salsa taco. It fails to mention that there's a nasty vegan meat paste in it as well. Don't order this taco unless you're hoping to save a cute little cow. They need to relabel their menu to clearly state that the "Beyond" taco has a meat substitute as one of the ingredients.
If you don't eat here, you don't love tacos. I love tacos and have dined from just about every taco truck and Mexican food joint in our area, but this spot is by far the highest quality, most delicious and interesting places to eat tacos (and salads). Seriously great quality local greens, wagyu barbacoa (READ THAT OVER AGAIN A FEW TIMES), gourmet creations... you need to eat here. Owned by one of our favorite restaurants in Carmel (Cultura) - they know what they're doing. Even their CRICKETS taste amazing - yes, for $3 you can eat savory citrus crickets. Do it.
Tacos are on point. Price is right. Only major critique is that the music is the absolute biggest mismatch. It’s sort of a funky hip taco joint but the music is the slowest spa/jazz music. We’ve been twice and both times the same music was playing. Kinda kills the vibe. Out with the friends for a good time getting tacos, but gets put to sleep by the lullaby saxophone. Weird.
Liked that we could order at a kiosk - gave us plenty of time to evaluate our options. Tacos were tasty, messy & small. We tried the barbacoa, cod & carnitas. The salsa verde overwhelmed the cod taco a bit. We'll have to come back & try some others next time.
Crazy good wagu barbacoa, chicken, and shrimp tacos. Outstanding guacamole (heavy on lime, just right saltiness). Self-order and pay at a kiosk, but they bring your food to your table and check in on you. I'm thinking of a second visit in my week long vacation to Monterey, and I really try to never repeat a place during the same trip.
This Monterey Outpost of Carmel's Cultura definitely takes the art of the taco to the next level. Housemade tortillas nestle upscale fillings such as Wagyu beef barbacoa and Monterey rock cod, accompanied by excellent guacamole or ceviche. The atmosphere kicks fast casual up as well, with orders placed at the counter but brought to your table by the attentive staff. Would be a standout in the very competitive Alvarado Street dining market except for the prices, which unfortunately hit higher levels as well.
