Located at 1781 North Dorgenois Street and the sort of place where a homeless man as well as the Sheriff may approach a diner during the course of a fifteen minute visit for a handout or interrogation, respectively, The Buttermilk Drop Bakery & Café may not seem like the sort of place a Caucasian Midwesterner visiting town would be at 6:30 in the morning, but between the products and its friendly staff it is actually an unlikely New Orleans ‘must see.’

Open at 5am daily Weekdays and 6am on Weekends, far more convincing for a Donut Shop than Wink’s trendy environs opening after eight in the French Quarter, The Buttermilk Drop features several varieties of fresh fried Dough in addition to a buffet-style arrangement of Southern Breakfast specialties, most patrons coming and going quickly with only a few taking the opportunity to dine in at booths just inside the entrance the building.

Busy in the kitchen, a glass partition and window separating the dining area from clouds of Flour and whirring mixers, it was with Donuts in mind that an order was placed, paid for and subsequently bagged, a little over $5 exchanged for five selections with the heavily powdered Custard filled pillow thankfully separated from the rest, yet still making a snowy mess of hands, table and floor.

Skeptic of the Fritter at first, some areas so thick with glaze that the top was rendered white, the lumpy round was pleasantly crunchy despite sweetness with a capital “S,” the Sugar-coated Square sort of like Raisin Brioche with a soft and pillowy texture to the base that likely would have made for a great Bread Pudding, as well.

Saving the eponymous item for last, the Cop who’d originally suggested I was “casing the place out” for taking a picture outside recommending “you gotta try both,” one would be challenged to decide whether the original Buttermilk or Cocoa-tinged Red Velvet was better, the decision mostly that of personal preference from which one of each is definitely the best option…with “World Famous” Wink’s falling short of both.

I had the small grits, with eggs and bacon. The grits were more runny than I like but the bacon and eggs were on point, though I could have used more eggs.

Of course, I had a buttermilk drop. Delicious! Worth the trip. It's more doughy than a donut hole. Kind of like a cake donut hole.

Good stuff!. Stopped by today, hoping to get a glimpse of "Wink" from the movie "Beasts of the Southern Wild." Well, not only did we catch a glimpse, but he came from the back and talked with us and took pictures. What a genuinely nice guy. As for the buttermilk drops they were moist and just plain delicious. I also loved their jelly donuts.

Really good bakery.. I haven't had a chance to try the breakfast yet and somebody else will have to say if the buttermilk drop is as good as McKenzie's was. But everything i have had from the bakery counter has been great. They open at 6a.m.

Fresh and delicious baked goodies. The chocolate covered donuts, apple fritters and cinnamon rolls were huge and full of flavor. Great locally owned spot to visit in the area

We ordered an omelette, chicken-n-waffles & grilled donuts - ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!! This is hands down some of the best breakfast we have had here in New Orleans. I must add that we even ordered delivery via UberEats & expect some sort of sogginess due to that.. the chicken was still crispy like we were in the restaurant. Did I mention good portions?? Yes!! That too! So sorry I didn’t get a picture of the amazing omelette-it was devoured very quickly!!

This place is amazing. The regular donuts were fine, but the buttermilk drops are truly the star of the show. We got original and red velvet flavors. The red velvet is very good; the original is astonishingly delicious. The appearance of the place may be off putting; don’t let it. It’s open and the man behind the counter was so kind and friendly. I told my son that this bakery is exactly representative of New Orleans: it doesn’t always look open or even functional at first glance. But do a little investigating and you will end up with some delicious food and find friendly, kind, welcoming people.

Best chicken I have had, EVER! The chicken was super moist and juicy. There were no dine in options so we had to eat in the car, but it was very well worth it. The waffle was okay too. Big comparison to Roscoes in Los Angeles. A must try if you love chicken!

I really try to only go on Saturday or Sunday. They have been making some improvements and I hope all will work out for them. Found this amazing little bakery and had the best apple fritter I've ever eaten. The cinnamon rolls are huge and also the best I've ever had. Next door at the other side you can get all sorts of delectable items as well. The biscuits are also some of the best I've had. I will be back for shrimp and grits as it smelled wonderful. Highly recommend you roll thru and get a bite. Get there early for the best selection as the last lemon filled was bought right before my eyes. It looked delicious. I'll get one of those next time as well. Happy eating y'all!

I ate here twice while visiting NOLA. The food was good and decently priced. The staff were friendly and service was quick. I ordered pancakes with eggs and bacon one day and cheesy eggs & grits with sausage the next. I sampled my friends waffles and potatoes too. I also had a glazed donut and original and blueberry buttermilk drops. The only thing I didn’t like were the brownies which looked amazing but lacked the flavor I expected.

Food 4.5 The buttermilk drops are definitely worth the visit - the dough is better than a regular donut. The shrimp and grits were my favorite - it came w/ eggs and seasoned hash/potato. Chicken and waffle had mixed reviews from my family. Service 2-4 The donut place had wonderful service, super nice young lady. The food place was ok - they forgot our order (wasn’t even busy...)

Great place to go for a sweet tooth. Everything is fresh and tasty. The dough has a nice citrusy/lemon back flavor. Different and loved it. Try the Buttermilk Drop. Deliciousness.

Always so good. Donuts are always fluffy and fresh. Biscuits that will make you backflip. I wish coffee was on the Uber eats menu that would be perfect 🫡

This was my first time trying this spot. I have to say that the buttermilk drops were pretty good but I would have preferred them if they were fresh out of of the glaze. I will try them again the next time I am in NOLA!
