So good. Lauded for a reason. Ofc get a burger, but try the chili too. We like to get a cup to start and share before our burgers come. Their cottage fries are out of this world. Also, as a pickle lover, I appreciate they put plenty of slices so that every bite is a pickle bite.
Excellent burgers and chips. Once you make the waiting list, fast and effective service. Deserves the burger hype but also make sure to try the Apple Walnut Cake. Also suggest to order no more than Medium on burgers, cook is on the conservative side (e.g. medium is more like medium well).
I feel like there’s not much point in reviewing this place since it’s so well known and established but let me just say I’ve tried Corner Bistro which is the other hailed “best old school nyc burger” and this one I keep coming back to! Everything from the decor to the servers make me feel transported back in time and the burgers here really are the beefiest and have the best crusts. They might not cook it as medium rare as I’d like but they are still very juicy and salted nicely. The fries have deteriorated a bit unfortunately but are still enjoyable and different and the chili cup is a must order as well! Comforting and cozy, this place has it all and I never have the stomach space to try the other dishes or desserts, but I’m sure everything is superb. A true NYC gem!
Good, thick burger...but not great. Loved the fries. Chili was pretty good too. Had to wait 90 minutes in the middle of the afternoon. Not as food as I had hoped hoped. Service was really fast.
If I could give an extra star for service I would. Darnell was our waiter (I hope I’ve remembered that right). These guys have been doing this job for ages and it shows. Delightful, friendly, charming, caring and fast.
Cash only and no computers also means I have no photos. I enjoyed going analogue and just drinking in the atmosphere and the IPA.
Great value meal and the burgers were exceptional.
I was in a meeting nearby and got into the queue system while I waited for my family to join me. So a half hour wait but it didn’t feel like that for my family. I was happy. And I loved that the door host is so on top of things. No chancers trying to barge their way in escape her gaze.
We stopped here on a hot day and despite the small looking interior it was well cooled, on to the food!
We split a burger and chili with cottage fries. I can’t get enough of these cottages fries, they were excellent dipped in the chili which has the just right consistency for a dip or topping. The burger was good, not going to win any awards but very solid, I could eat this burger every day and not complain.
Service was prompt and polite, kept the drinks coming and food was turned around quickly.
The All-American Experience. If you want a fancy Mcdonalds burger then this is the place to come. Solid patty, bun & cheese. Simple - just the way it should be done.
Overall - 8.8
Patty - Good flame grill taste on the patty
Bun - soft but holds the contents well
Filling - tastes and smells like an all American McDonald’s burger
Price - $15
We came here to try the famous bacon cheeseburger. On a Saturday we waited like 20 minutes to be seated. The tables are pretty close together, and they only take cash but it had a nice "diner" feeling, pretty touristy. The burger was good! Had to take out some of the bacon because it felt like too much, though. We also had the spinach chicken salad which was huge and very well balanced. Overall, good experience!
Pretty good burgers! The bun is a bit soft on the bottom though so breaks easily after half the burger is gone. Packed in the restaurant even at noon time on a weekday! Sitting outside is a nice change but it gets dusty with all the cars passing by. Service was mediocre.... I guess they have too many guests.....
Overall a good place to get a quick bite. Not cheap though.
The food is excellent. Service is not so great. They get very busy and seem to be short staffed. You can be left for long spans of time without anyone checking in.
That being said- this place has been here forever and the food is delicious.
I had a bacon burger, the fries and the chili bowl. Great place. Definitely top 5 burger spots in the city.
Old school bar and restaurant brings you back. Cash only with vintage register. Classic burger cooked on a flattop griddle is a must. Pair it with a cold beer and it can’t be beat. One of the best burgers in the city.

What a fantastic place to have hamburgers and apple pie! Have you really even been to NYC if you haven’t eaten in a little restaurant that is a bit off the beaten track and specialises in American food? (And I don’t mean a branded McDonalds or Starbucks). Burgers are just fantastic and the apple pie, (I highly recommend adding whipped cream), is divine. Really worth making time to visit if you’re in town.
JG Melon is truly worth the hype with its delicious burgers and outstanding fries. However, I was disappointed with the waiter's reaction when I couldn't leave a generous tip due to the restaurant's cash-only policy.
Came here for the first time last week and loved it! Just a heads up that it's a cash-only establishment so be prepared. We also got the pretty early so had no issue getting seated (around 5:30). I ended up getting the turkey burger which was delish and my friend got a cheeseburger which he also loved! The wedge fries were bomb and even better when dipped in a cup of their delicious chili. We didn't get to have the dessert here so can't comment but loved our experience. The service was great and coming here you kinda feel like a regular, a sensation of familiarity! Definitely worth the stop-in.
I was not disappointed at all checking out this staple for a classic burger! This cash only restaurant serves no nonsense burgers and are worth the visit. Service is quick and the environment is cozy and comfortable. I would definitely recommend checking it out!
