Yummy food and great service. One of the best burgers in town. Now, this is a truly expensive restaurant where drinks can be $35+ so you’ve been warned. The environment has no natural light, so perhaps best for the winter months. This restaurant is regularly on restaurant week so plan accordingly.
We had an overall great lunch experience at Dowling's within the Carlyle. The food and service were great, and I absolutely loved the elegant decor of the dining room. This is a great spot on the Upper East Side!
First, the service is about as good as anyone would ever want. The main server was knowledgeable and helpful with menu choices. And the Captain was a local who gave great background information about the rich history of the restaurant and how your order was sourced.
Dowling's was renovated and the decor is stunning. The atmosphere is amazing which keeps it far from the madding crowd of restaurants-in-hotels vibe.
The tuna tartare was light, cheerful and a great way to start off.
The dover sole is a rarity in the city. It is prepared and deboned table-side. It has a light, lemon, taste that melts in your mouth.
Similarly, the lamb shank is tender and falls off the bone.
Do not pass up on Dowling's at the Carlyle! The staff made us feel like VIPs. And the food backed it up. It was a wonderful experience that we will definitely have again.
Loved it! So classy and elegant. Such a beautiful space. Such good service. The food was also really good. The drinks were good too. They almost make a show of it. I would highly recommend.

Everything is a bit old fashioned here…, from the dishes to the waiters and a plushy ambience. The waiters like to chat with the guests, dreaming of the old glamorous days without tourists in sneakers. The food is very nice, the wine card unspectacular and the whole restaurant very densely packed with tables and chairs. When you are not a regular guest they give you a table in front where all the waiters pass, making it somewhat un-cosy.
I loved it. But let it be known I’m a fan of the classics.
It may not be Gen Z friendly, (Though parts of the service are TIkTok content worthy. Namely the preparation of table side dishes, A flambe station adds a touch of drama to the steak Diane dish for instance, set on fire with a pour of cognac). But where Dowling’s “lacks” in the trendy it excels in service, ambiance and decor.
The menu isn’t adventurous or ground breaking. Mainstays you might expect - Branzino, Salmon, Steak… But you don’t come to a place like Dowling’s for a culinary challenge or quirky cocktails. You come for the old school Manhatten charm that many have forgotten . In this area Dowling’s excels. One of the earlier reviews described it as “stuffy” and I agree. But luckily for me that was exactly what I was in the mood for !
I would say run, don’t walk over especially while it’s restaurant week pricing. But that behavior would be frowned upon, so maybe just walk briskly over to Dowling’s. 😅
Typical NYC steakhouse. Great service but place is just a little bit on the stuffier side.
Food was of good quality. Service was friendly and attentive.
The service was superb. The food was good, but not over the top. Go for the experience. Ensconce yourself in the clubby, sophisticated atmosphere and enjoy this quiet refuge from the hustle and bustle of NYC.
Overall great experience here for restaurant week. The half chicken is actually fantastic, very juicy. The rest of the food was solid but not special. Decor and ambiance were A+ though. And the service was great.
The dining room is quite magnificent. It looks like a different kind of museum or gallery. We were planning to go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art after lunch, so this put us all in the perfect “art mood.”
Their complimentary bread was one of the best I’ve ever had! We were not super hungry, but we devoured the bread…
For food, we had Faroe Island Salmon, Carlyle Burger, Croque Madame, Heritage Bacon, and Truffle Fries. Everything we ordered was really tasty, we enjoyed them all. I had a high expectation for Dowling’s, and they did not disappoint!
The service was excellent, we were well taking care of from the beginning to the end. One of the staff even offered to take some photos of us, which was really sweet! The food was delicious, and we were all very full, we did not have any room for dessert, which was sad… We just have to go back there again!
Great food, ambiance and service!! The staff went above and beyond to provide an exceptional dining experience for lunch. Can’t wait to go back for dinner.
Dining at Dowling's last night was a memorable experience. The decor was elegant, welcoming and comfortable. The cuisine was a perfect blend of classics and innovative dishes. Although it was our first visit there, chef Sylvain Delpique and his team made us feel like a VIP guests. I look forward to my next visit!
Food and atmosphere impossible to beat at this price point. Portions were very sizable as well. Cocktails are a bit overpriced and service could be better, but otherwise amazing.
Another wonderful experience. Brought my parents here visiting from out of town, and had yet another amazing experience. Amazing service, delicious food, great ambience. Dowling’s is a special treat.
Had a great experience! The ambiance is very welcoming and charming. Amazing food, cocktails and service. From the starter to the dessert the quality and tastes of everything was outstanding. Staff - extremely knowledgeable and make great recommendations. Highly recommend!
