Pity that I only tried this restaurant in its last week. The dishes were all very good, with just enough elements to be interesting, but not so many to be overwhelming. Everything was creative but still unfussy, which is a nice change of pace from a lot of other fine dining restaurants.
Sad to hear it's closing. The 9 course meal was superb! We could eat the bread literrally for all 9 courses though.
Service could not be better. They even explained all of the dishes and wine we ordered. Thanks for a wonderful night 😘
Contra has been a fun culinary experience in general. Always interesting flavor combinations with cool plating.
Glad we got a last taste before they close.
I don’t think it was enough food but most of the dishes were great.
We didn’t do the wine pairing but we had some great wine the sommelier recommended.
Came to the place with high expectations and it overall was pretty satisfied. Went for the table d’hôte. It came with 6 courses including a dessert at the end. Stars among the offering were the scallop, prawns and eel dishes. The beef wagyu dish was a bit heavy on the lemon. The rest of the meal, was alright. The dehydrated strawberry cream was a nice dish to end off the meal. The service was good throughout the evening. Overall would recommend and would comeback to see what new cool concepts they have to offer.
New American, where every dish is a knockout. Service is warm, professional, and efficient. Wine pairings are interesting and creative. Staff really knows the menu.
Food was incredible. Servers were very friendly. Had genuine interest in our trip, one server was asking us about the UK as she planned on visiting so we were happy to help. You’ve got to go for the Carte Blanche option, it was worth every penny. This was a perfect place to go for out last night of our holiday. Thank you
Wow where to begin?! I had the absolute pleasure of getting in on their first night being back open! They sold out the whole week and the weeks to come in just 30 minutes or so! New menu concept, new atmosphere. Wonderful! Ambrose was our waiter, he was a joy! The staff are very knowledgeable of their menu items and drink items. Food was 10/10. Congrats on being back open Contra! And congrats and cheers to new beginnings :) We will be back very soon.
This place was picked out from my good mate Remal Scully of Scully’s st James restaurant in London as the chef has won the same award as him and he wanted to try his food.
The staff and the venue very cool and it had an awesome set menu.
You could have wines to match but the wine waiter seemed to really know what he was talking about so we ordered two wines that he recommended.
First up a white from Germany and secondly a light red from Italy, he definitely did not disappoint both where great.
The food was well balanced I feel and just the right amount. Every dish was well thought out and a good mix with great flavours. Price was extremely good value and wait staff top class.
Definitely worth a visit
Really lovely place and a great meal! We came here for a birthday and had a great experience. It's a 7 course set menu with an option to have a cheese course for an added cost. Each dish is thoughtful and creative, and everything was cooked perfectly. We opted for one course of the cheese which was really good but not sure I'd do it again as it is $11 for a piece of cheese. Anyways, service is great and attentive, drinks are good, and this is all around a good gem in the lower east side.
The tasting menu is creatively delicious! Every course was full of different, yet complementing flavors and textures. Our waitress was very nice and brought us an extra dessert for our anniversary :) If you're looking for a restaurant that has a fine tasting menu, a chill atmosphere, and relaxed attire, then this is it!
What is not to like?
A culinary adventure featuring almost countless different preparations and ingredients.
A cozy and intimate space and relatively few considerations you have to make, allowing you to focus more on the food itself (and the beverages if you decided to pair it)
Speaking of the drink pairings, if you are a fan of funky and wild style beers or wines, look no further. I had some extremely interesting wines , beers, sakes with the pairing.
A good restaurant not only provides decent food but also adds the considerateness for the customers to warm your stomach. Contra did that, well done!
We had 3 people for the dinner and almost ordered all the food on the menu except for some dishes with unfavorable ingredient. The appetizers were wagyu beef crudo and fish tartare, tofu (my favorite), and all of them were delicious. Entrees were lobster tart, smoked eel and monkfish. I would say entrees not as good as appetizers but still above average, not affecting the magic and good mood to expect the following dishes. Lobster tart was kinda salty, but might be it supposed to be. Then here came the dessert. They were great! Satsumo mandarin and pomegranate. They were so great that we'd like to order them again, however, it was too late to do so, and that probably was the best part of the curation, making the night from good experience to a memorable one.
Definitely will go again and look forward to new courses!
Great small plate, they are very accommodating when you have food allergies, they made up a completely different dinner set. I would recommend the wine pairing also they did a fantastic job of matching the current food sets with the perfect wine.
