I'm from Maryland and wanted a referral to get the best fish and chips in NYC. My concierge recommended this place. Upon walking up, I said it looks like a little hole in the wall or dive. Once inside it was a little larger with what stools and small table counters. But once my fish and chips arrived, it was the best, I mean the best fish and chips I have ever had. I got a small cod and a small haddock with chips and their specialty deep fried brussels sprouts. I am usually a person that cannot eat my entire meal, but let's just say I ate almost that entire meal. The only thing was left with some fries because I could not stuff anymore down my stomach. Don't walk by this place and think that is too small and is a dive. Go inside enjoy the experience and some great food from a authentic fish and chips pub.

Enjoyed every single bite! Proper chip shop just like at home! Had the cod and chips with R Whites Lemonade, and it didn't disappoint! They also had Eastenders memorabilia, which was a nice touch! Also the Food Network and Bobby Flay featured them on his show "Throw Down with Bobby Flay' - that's when you know this chippy is legit! Lol! Totally recommend a go!

I fell in love with this place the first time I had one of their giant battered bangers (an English sausage), but the whiting fish was so flaky & delicious I now have to go back for the cod.......and yes they give a load of chips! excellent place!

Absolutely the best fish and chips ever. Eating at A Salt & Battery is like an orgasm for the mouth. And if you are lucky, you might catch owner Nicky yelling at someone in the street. I could eat here every single day. They make it feel like home, somehow.

Probably the best fish and chips in all of Manhattan. We really enjoyed it and we even went out of our way to go there again this year.

My family and I originally heard of A Salt and Battery on Food Network when Bobby Flay attempted to beat them at their best batch of fish and chips. A bunch of us went to New York City the day after Thanksgiving one year and decided to try their food. We were in total amazement as we watched them make our food FRESH; hand battering the fish, fresh frying the fries, and then serving the hot and fresh in the traditional newspaper cone with malted vinegar. I have not had a piece of fish I enjoyed more either before or since that time. The portions they serve are HUGE, and as I said, they are piping hot, and full of flavor. It's just a small store, and has only a few seats inside, but the way they serve the food, it is super convenient to eat even when you are just walking. Other than adding the vinegar to taste, no salt or pepper need be added. It was perfect right out of the kitchen.

DEEP FRIED MARS BAR!

DEEP FRIED MARS BAR!

DEEP FRIED MARS BAR!

Recommended by 9 out of 10 cardiologists!

Fish and Chips done just right. Crunchy batter and tasty fish. Moist. Flaky. Yummy, especially coated with malt vinegar. Chips are also good and taste even better with the malt vinegar on it. Do you get the feeling I like malt vinegar? I can put it on everything!

Deep Fried Mars Bar - yes we have all heard about this. Battered and deep fried crunchy gooey goodness. Don't know how better to describe it. Just a perfect dessert to have here after the fish and chips.

Actual place is small and the size of a walk-in closet with some counter seating and stools. Just good enough for a quick bite and on your way. Other British delicacies on the menu board to sample too, but overall limited options. Who cares? You come here for the Fish and Chips and Deep Fried Mars Bar. Deep Fried wonderfulness on top of Deep Fried tastiness on top of Deep Fried craziness.

Hmmm....why does my chest hurt? Is there a doctor in the house?

A Little Taste of Home. Brit-born Navdeep is quite particular about his fish and chips -- he scoffs at those places that fail to serve it with the proper vinegar, in fact. So he was pleasantly surprised by A Salt & Battery, where we had the classic cod and a plate of fried shrimp. Everything was piping hot, appropriately salty -- and served with malt vinegar. Overall, we were satisfied, though we felt like we might have a heart attack afterwards. And that's without even opting for the fried Mars Bar for dessert. Check out Tea & Sympathy's little shop next door if you want to take home some Smarties, Aeros and Flakes.

This place is my home-from-home. The smell and ambiance reminds me of my local chippie back in London. Sadly, the last two times I ordered, the pollack was a little overcooked and the chips undercooked. Still, when this place is good, it's very, very good!!

It's pretty good. Went there about a week ago , ordered pollock + chips + mushy peas. The cook from the Bobby Flay TV show wasn't there this time , the fish was good , the chips were cut fresh but weren't all that crispy on the outside although i guess this is more authentic.Mushy peas were pretty good , also made fresh.

Good. I am by no means a fish and chip expert, but I had the taste for F&C and had heard about this place. It was pretty much what I expected. and the food was good. I don't know that I'd call it the best fish and chips I've ever eaten, but definitely good!

Pretty good. I've definitely had better fish & chips, but both the fish and the chips here were still fairly good. The lack of eating space is a slight negative, but overall it's worth a visit.

Excellent Fish & Chips. If you like fried fish & chips, this is definitely one of the better options I've found in Manhattan. The chicken chunks are also great and their deep fried candy bars are to die for. I'd go for the toffee crisp over the mars bar, but that's just me.

"Likes" is an understatement here. I LOVE this place! You can't go wrong with anything on the menu and the staff is great. You just can't go wrong with fried cod, a boddingtons and a deep fried Mars bar for dessert. IN COD WE TRUST!

Standing Room Only. When you need a deliciously greasy fish fry...this is the place. A Salt & Battery can hardly be considered anything but a take out place...they have 6 stools and only enough counter space for 4 people...you do the math. The menu is simple...choose your fish, add a basket of chips if you like (who wouldn't) and...not for the faint of heart...you might consider letting them batter fry a Snicker's Bar or a couple of Oreos. Beverages are served out of the can or beer in bottles.

Cod apparently is in short supply due to over fishing and so they've moved to recommending Pollack which, to me, isn't even in the same category for taste or texture. Instead opt for the Haddock which is a small bump up in price but is worth every penny over the Pollack. Here's hoping the Cod makes a hearty return...you can't beat Cod for fish and chips. Recommended.

Charming place, Great food!. I make a point to visit A Salt & Battery every time I come to the Big Apple. While the place itself is small, it's cozy and has a wonderful charm thats all it's own. The staff is friendly, and the prices are very reasonable.

The food is amazing. I'm quite a fan of fish & chips, and nowhere does it like A Salt & Battery! I have to admit that the fish and chips there spoiled me, and whenever I order it anywhere else, I'm let down.

I'd heavily suggest washing the deliciousness down with Bulmer's and ice, for a meal that will quite possibly change your life!

Cool place. I went with two friends on a Thursday evening. Prices were much more reasonable compared with Tea and Sympathy next door (there's a $9.75 minimum bill per person, which we did not know about prior to our arrival). The place was quiet and we did not have to wait long for our food. The workers there were friendly, but there is not much seating, so that is a downside. I had the cod bites and they were very good and another friend had fish and chips. Prices are good and so are the food :)

a genuine real fish and chip shop, it is not just a themed effort it actually is better than many in England. I had haddock and chips, mushy peas and a bottle of irn bru ( ’Made in Scotland from girders’). The fish was great flaky and moist, the batter crisp,  the chips were solid, pretty tasty and mixed with the mushy peas were a tasty delight.

How perfect is this place? I've been craving fish & chips for a long time, so when a Brooklyn friend recommended AS&B, I was excited to try it out. To say I was delighted by this deeeelish food would be a grave understatement. The cod was flaky, tender, and perfectly battered. The chips were thick and flavourful: a perfect accompaniment to the fish. Being Canadian, I've grown up eating fish&chips. I've had it in the UK, too. I can honestly say that this was THE BEST FISH & CHIPS by a mile. Or kilometer. Lol. Would definitely recommend it to anyone I know. A gazillion stars!!

I would like to give the owner of this fish and chip place a 5-star review for their honesty. During our visit, my friend accidentally overpaid for their order of 2 fish with 1 chip, and the owner promptly returned the extra money to us. Despite not being a fan of fish and chips myself, I was pleasantly surprised by the freshness, crispiness, and fluffy texture of the ingredients at this small establishment. Even though I had eaten beforehand, I couldn't resist finishing the entire plate. This place is a culinary gem in New York City, offering delicious food at affordable prices. Don't miss the chance to indulge here, especially if you're on a limited budget.

Punny fish and chip shop like it's adjacent shops by the same owner. ~$20 for a large cod & pop. Large, crispy, flaky all that's missing is yesterday's newspaper for the authenticity. Alas place smells greasy like a chippy with all the frying, recommend takeaway or eathing outside.

Lovely little place to get fish and chips. Counter service. Small area-about 6 bar seats. Everything was tidy and the man who helped us was very friendly and quick to help. I typically prefer smaller pieces of fried fish over one large piece and this is a large piece shop, but they did it very well and the fish stuck to the fry. Great tartar sauce. Good fries. Nice selection of UK beverages. Only two cons, which I won’t knock them a star for because, well it’s a fish shop and nyc: no bathrooms from what I could see and fish smell did cling to my clothes for a bit. Would like to return and try a few more menu items!

Good fish and chips. Clever name. Basic unassuming set-up. Uncharacteristically friendly service for NYC. The incredible smell of the fish stopped me in my tracks a few years ago and I finally tried them out this year. It was... just good... but a solid "good" and better than most I've had in NY. I think they use cod. The flaky fish melts in your mouth surrounded by a crust fried to golden perfection. Served on a bed of fries with a fantastic tartar sauce. But something happens to your taste buds or at least mine when I have fried foods with soda. I think my Sprite mixed with residual oil in the fish or fries and produced a slight bitter taste in back of my tongue. It's happened to me before so if you recognize the sensation don't have soda because this authentic meal is so much better without it.

Got the hammock fish, cod fish and chips, both large. The large is good enough for two to share. A large fish and chips costs around 20, would say worth it. (The picture shown is taken after cutting it, the actual serving size is bigger) My friends loved the taste, I found it good too.

Decided to drop in for a lunch special and was not disappointed- you get a large, lovely hunk of fish and a basket of thick chips all fried to perfection. The cod was wonderfully flaky and the batter crispy but light. While everything was crispy, nothing was greasy. Staff was also polite and friendly. While the batter and chips aren't seasoned, I preferred seasoning it myself and the flavor of the cod really shines through. Tartar sauce was also solid. A no-frills joint that should definitely be checked out.

It's a chipper. Nothing more and nothing less. Fish and dirks have always been great on the 3 occasions I've been. Cod, haddock, battered sausage, peas, curry, gravy have all been sampled, along with a lifetimes worth of salt and vinegar. The food is more about memories, comfort and home than haute cuisine.

Finally got to come back here after being unable to get here for a while. My favorite (favourite) authentic UK Chip Shop in town. Not much (if anything) has changed here since I was last here. It is little more than a hole in the wall and that's just fine. There's a few stools and a six inch wide countertop to park your food on. I came in, ordered the 8 ounce fried cod and chips. You do wait a bit as they don't fry until you order and it's well worth the wait. The fish comes out steaming hot and the crust is nicely golden and adheres perfectly to the fish. The chips seem to be hand cut and with a bit of salt, and (if you're a true UK fan), a bit of malted vinegar, the meal is complete. The fish is served with tartar sauce as you might expect .... while I did enjoy it with the fish, it was not the tartar sauce I recall from past visits (and too me was more authentic). This time the tartar sauce had more of a peppery taste, rather than a dill/citrus hint (and would have only taken away half of a star rather than a full one if I could). Overall, the food is delicious, they offer up haddock as well as chicken if you're not a fan of fish. And they do deep fried candy bars (particularly Mars bars), as an after dinner treat.

Excellent fish and chips place in the West Village. Lovely guy at the counter, I ordered a large cod with chips, and ginger beer. Fish was nice and flaky, light crispy batter, and best tartar sauce I've ever had. Would definitely go again for the fish!

First time back since the Covid 19 lock downs. The Haddock with chips was everything how I remembered. Amazing. The batter on the Haddock was seasoned properly and fried to golden yellow crisp. The tar tar sauce was the nail in coffin for this proper Friday fish day tradition. The chips on the other hand was 3 out of 5 stars, thus dragging the rating to 4 stars. It was not seasoned and a bit soggy. Maybe it was an off day, and I will update the rating after my next meal here.

EXCELLENT CHIPS!!! I am astounded that I've never been here before since I am a FRENCH FRY FIEND! I have walked past so many times and was so glad the place called out to me when I needed a salty snack. Their fries are perfect. We doused them half with vinegar and half with ketchup to do the international mash up and hoovered them. Must come back for the fish!!!

Everything was freshly cooked- ordered the cod, haddock, scallops and fries. Also ordered mushy peas - advice from a British friend that it’s only authentic with mushy peas. All tasted great (perhaps except for the chips- that was mildly disappointing, it was a little soggy). Remember to add your salt/pepper and vinegar to your liking. Enjoyed the tartar sauce too. They do not have a lot of seating and we managed to grab a few bar seats on a Sunday noon to enjoy our meal. It does taste and feel like how you would have it in the UK!

Fantastic! Proper British style fish and chips. Had to travel all the way from Florida to find fish and chips that are as good as the UK.
