3 course lunch special (it runs till 6pm)

My husband and I decided to both do the lunch special for $19.99 ($24.99 if you pay by card)

He had the white soup to start and I had the carrot salad (nothing special)

I ordered the lamb chops with mashed potatoes, this was excellent. i really loved it. the taste was not overwhelming and the portion was just right. my husband ordered the sea bass and it was a tiny tiny tiny piece of fish on some greens...off course he was not happy about that.

The best part of the meal is the creme caramel they have for dessert! i am so happy to find a place that does it well.. I hate the cheap Latin American imitation of it called flan! creme caramel is the way to go!

Lovely evening at Matisse. I called Matisse for reservations and also asked about a dress code. The person taking my reservation said, "Yes, we have a very strict dress code. We insist that you are comfortable." That was an indication of the wonderful evening we had at Matisse. The food was excellent and the service was both personal and very professional. Samuel and the rest of the staff took such good care of us. And the food was excellent. If you're looking for a great meal in a warm, welcoming atmosphere in Mid-town East in New York, I highly recommend Matisse.

Came in for lunch and was pretty slow. I tried their Mac and cheese which was pretty good but wish it had a crunch to it. So I ended up asking for bread to go with it. I then tried their frangipane blueberry and banana dessert - it was okay but would try something different if I came back.

WOW. friendliest service, great atmosphere and amazing prices! This isn't an advertisement, and I'm extremely impressed by this small restaurant. Conveniently near Grand Central as well if you're not a local like me. Highly suggest Julia Child's beef whatever (forget the french word, something like borgmunon but my auto-correct says that's not a word). Go here if you want a peaceful evening in NYC. Also potentially romantic date destination. Great job Matisse! I also recognize that there are some very negative reviews on this restaurant, but I just don't see how someone can see this place as "disgusting". The only explanations for this are 1. Previous ownership ( didn't see the date on these reviews) 2. Simply a bad waiter/waitress and 3. Just a personal grudge against this place for some reason. It's really a beautiful place!

I love this place. As does my husband, Yves. We go there 3 to 4 times a week in the evenings, and each time we have a great feeling not only about the food and drinks, but also about the friendly atmosphere we always enjoy there. The staff is more than dedicated, they want to make you feel happy. We always receive 5 star quality service, even when we decide to take only an appetizer at the bar. My husband loves to cook, but he loves the French food (at a very decent price) we have there. This is a place to go whatever your mood: when you feel happy, when you feel depressed, when you are hungry, when you just want to enjoy NYC.... THANK YOU Matisse for making us feel so great each time we leave, since each time we want to come back.... from Sylvie and Yves

We are fortunate to have Matisse down the block from our apartment. At least once a week we can be found comfortably eating delicious French classics or weekly specials. Sometimes we'll go for a late drink on Saturday night to listen to the jazz. Wonderful welcoming people great atmosphere feels like you are home.

Very tasty brunch place with a French theme. The Eggs Benedict with salmon is a nice version with lots of flavor. Onion tart was a classic and full of flavor. The Croque Madame was a classic. If you are in the area I suggest a visit.

My wife and I were up in New York for a quick weekend trip from DC. We were staying in Midtown East and wanted something light for dinner before seeing a show. We headed out early - around 6 PM - on a Saturday evening and found the restaurant nearly empty. My wife and I ordered a bottle of Cotes du Rhone and started by splitting the foie gras. It was a small appetizer with baked apple and a sweet dressing. Really delicious. My wife ordered the beef tartare and I had the steak frites for dinner. My steak was delicious, and perfectly rare. My wife's tartare had great seasoning and was a great portion size. We finished our meal with an order of profiteroles, which were the perfect size to split. The service was fantastic, with both our waitress as well as the owner being very attentive to our needs. Can't say enough about this place. Great atmosphere, fantastic food, friendly service!

Terrific country style pate, as good or better than France. Loved the sweetbreads. Foie gras, order it Euroean style or you will get it overcooked for silly Americans. Very generous portions of the proteins. Onion tarte very imaginative. Glass wines very nice Malbec and Rose. We ate apps only, terrific as a small plate Dinner.

What an incredible restaurant, exactly what I hoped for my birthday dinner. French onion soup, beef bourguignon, tarte aux pommes...felt like I was back in Paris. Very authentic. They even gave us complimentary champagne to celebrate!

I judge french restaurants mainly by their steak tartars and this is one of my favorites. The waitresses are friendly and knowledgeable about the wine selection. It is in the rotation.
