This place was perfectly clean and the menu was small and sumptuos . Sambar, vada, dosa, kichdi everything tastes awesome. Must try vegetarian Restaurant .
Never thought that i would find this place in New York... best place for south indian food... their sambhar is really good and i just love their idly and masala dosas
Superb place to have South Indian food in the US....the idlis so soft and the vada Soo crispy...do go to this place if you are craving for a south Indian restaurant in US
Amazing food....though little pricey. I had the paneer dosa, very filling and tasty. Would definitely come again. Good variety and good service.

Nice place for quality South Indian food in NY. We ordered snacks like dosa, idli, upma, Uthappa etc. All were good spl the 3 varieties of chutney. Indoor and outdoor seating both offer good ambiance and friendly service.
WOW I am so excited to talk about my favorite restaurant SARAVANA BHAVAN. I love this restaurant because of its unique taste and reputation. I grew up in India and this restaurant is like a home where we wont feel we are eating in a restaurant. The food connects us to home and mommies handmade food. When I moved to NewYork City the first thing I browsed was how many indian restaurants we have and VIOLA found my favorite one and was immensely satisfied and never felt home sick. I am vegetarian so the dishes are so close to my heart. Whenever I go I am always welcomed with love and affection and seated within a couple of minutes rarely it has taken 20 minutes. The servers are college going boys and is always responsible and caring. They serve me with hot appetizers within minutes and was always fresh, never felt it was prepared ahead. My favorite item is MINI IDLI and SAMBHAR VADA hmm YUMMMMM.. The dish that stands out is SAMBHAR love it and I can drink like two to three cups as such. The only reason I gave 4 stars is that its not in India. Otherwise this place rocks and the ambience stood out and always felt peaceful dining there.
My introduction to this mighty south-indian chain of restaurants was on my official trip to NYC.
Ambience: Cosy and comfortable. Well lit.
Food: Now what could go wrong with this chain. Ordered plain dosa and idli and they were great. Should i say did not miss India. Crisp brown to the perfection was Dosa served with 3- 4 chutneys. Idli was rightly steamed and fluffy. Sambhar (lentil) had just correct blend of spices.
Ambience: 4/5
Food: 4.5/5
Value for Money : 4/5
Union verdict: Your hunger for most poplar south indian meal in NY is satisfied here. (4.5/5).
Completely lives up to its name and standard. What better than having india wala masala dosa in the land of america!! Cant say a bad thing about them, love!!
The best place to njoy South Indian food , the place is always packed and 1 vl be surprise to see the wAiting guest standing outside

Hello sir i m from india..
If u give one chance m proof u hisself...m knoe indian curry food
And 120+ tean coffee and juise so sir give achance
A must try if you like or want to try South-Indian food. Their 14 piece mini ghee Idlis are delicious and quite filling. If you have this, I'm sure you would just want to go for a smaller entree or split an entree as it is quite filling. The Bisibelabat (rice cooked in lentils and vegetables) is pretty good but I have tasted better in other places. I haven't tried the dosas here, but I'm sure they'd be delicious.
Overall a lovely place to have some good South-Indian food.
Being an South Indian , I kinda felt exciting to go here. This place was a saviour for me after a continuous times of continental food during the journey. A good place with a pleasant ambience with authentic Indian cuisine.
I have been to the one which is on Lexington avenue quite a few times. The south indian stuff dosas, idlis etc are very good. They are famous for that. Filter coffee was a disappointment. Price is very reasonable.
The words “Saravana Bhavan” can anyone back to India and unfortunately for me my moms the nostalgic type… so every time I’m in New York she forces us to go basically every day for breakfast because out of India this location has the most authentic and enjoyable food. The dosa’s are perfectly crispy, the idlis are super soft and their thali’s are full of flavour. A lot of South Indian restaurants have amazing main courses but when it comes to their sambar and chutney the taste is very underwhelming. Fortunately the sambars and chutney here have never failed to come through. The service is also extremely fast so if you’re looking forward to a whole day of sight seeing you wont be held back by slow service. . I hate vegetarian restaurants but I can never say I’m unsatisfied after going here.
Go for food, food has same taste, service and seating is not good. Food is tastier and same as expected in Sarvana Bhavan. Must end with filter coffee. I like it since it is veggie only, but they have a bar :)
One of the best South Indian cuisine you would find in most places. Even though it is a chain in India, the food at its U.S. Restaraunt is as close to home made South Indian vegetarian food as it gets.
I had the masala dosa and my friends had the thali which is a platter if small containers of foods
A thali is a life accomplishing festival that keeps you going forever. It is india at its shrieking best. Come hungry here so that you can finish all you order. Six of us had dosa, medu vada and the thali. Get to it!!
Inside of the kara dosa: hopefully you can make out the orange potato stuffing which is just so spicy for me, but I love every nose-dripping minute.
The cuisine is from the Udipi region in Southern India and the fare is what is collectively called tiffin and tends to be the ultimate Sunday Brunch for most Indians. Actually, I should preface this, the restaurant has vegetarian meal options and a wonderful collection of tiffin offerings, which tends to be the prefered choice for brunch.
Excellent food and very authentic. If you want good tasting South Indian food, this is the place. They also have North Indian items on the menu that I didn't try.
The service is very basic. I wish they had a proper seating space outside on the streets with heaters and shade. The outside seating space was on the curb and next to a loud machine that can be heard inside or outside the restaurant.
As you walk around this block of the UWS Amsterdam Ave, you get amazing scents of India and great south Indian cuisine. I'll give you a heads up that most of the negative reviews are related to the service at this restaurant. I honestly expect poor service at most NYC restaurants. I expect worse service if I ever go to an Indian restaurant. However, read all the reviews for Saravanaa Bhavan. VERY FEW are negative about the food. The food is awesome. It's authentic, it's flavorful, it's CHEAP, and it's fresh. The place itself is small, service is slow/inattentive, but the focus is on getting your order right and done WELL. I personally have no major complaints with this place. It's great Indian 'soul food' with great prices for NYC and fresh quality and good location. You can't miss the smells wafting down amsterdam!
Good thing is that when we entered very first, a staff came to check vaccination proof from individually each of the group.
Great food and friendly staff as always! I always enjoy visiting Sarvan Bhavan on our trips to NYC. We ordered the idli-vada platter, masala dosa, rasam and payasam. All dishes were authentic tasting and delicious.
This is the place we were looking for during our week long trip! Finally, got to the right place and had a excellent experience. We really enjoyed the quality and taste of the food! Mr.Vijay was very helpful and made sure that we had a good experience. Had been to the other location but had a very disappointing experience! We highly recommend this place if you want to taste the authentic south India food! We will sure visit this place during our next visit and also highly recommend this place to others😊
Excellent dosas in the UWS! I was having a pregnancy craving & usually have to travel to Jackson Heights to get dosas. Luckily I found this little gem in the city. I had a Rava Masala Dosa with onions, chili’s & potatoes & it was delicious. My husband had a Masala Dosa with potatoes & chili’s, which was crispy & buttery. Totally recommend if you’re in the city & craving dosas.
Must try dish: Paper Masala Dosa.
Having the nice aroma of Ghee, it's as super thin and Crispy as it could get.
They also serve additional rounds of Chutneys and Sambhar (for free)
Waiters are nice and courteous. They did ask vaccination proof for allowing dine-in, which is a good thing.
Saravanaa Bhavan is a South Indian iconic restaurant and this branch here in NY does justice to its reputation.
We were served by Vijay and his service definitely made the entire dining experience truly memorable.
We had the Thali lunch and uttapam for the kids. All our plates went back completely wiped clean! Definitely put this place on your list to eat when in NY.
Simple, delicious and well priced vegetarian Indian food. The dosas are very nice so it the thali
