Everything from the food to the atmosphere is the closest you will get to an authentic tonkatsu restaurant in Japan. Little touches like the model food in the window as you go in, the large laminated menu with overly stylized pictures of the food, and the pile of shredded cabbage that comes with your katsu make it feel like the real deal.

I got the Beef Don Set B. Everything taste amazing! The chef gave a lot of thought in the quality of the ingredients. The miso soup sets the tone of your palate as you start the course. The beef was not over seasoned and you can taste the actual subtle flavor of the beef. The amount of the rice is just enough to fill you up at 80% so it doesn’t burden your stomach digestion. Whenever you feel the beef don is too much, just take a bite of the cabbage salad and you can continue eating the don. It taste tangy and refreshes your palate. You must use the salad dressing as suggested by the server. I believe the salad dressing is hand made as well. You know you’re at the right place when you see actual Japanese people dining here. The kitchen staff speaks Japanese too. Also the restaurant do not take tips so keep that in mind as well.

Best tonkatsu place in NY. Also my favorite Japanese spot. This is a no tips restaurant. Currently due to the pandemic, they are offering huge discounts on alcohol. Order some to go! You can never go wrong with their curries and pork Katsu.

The Matsunoya experience reminds me of Japan. Meals are tip free. The pork cutlets are breaded with panko and are well fried. The curry is slightly sweet with small pieces of apple rounding it out. I would recommend immediately moving the pork cutlet onto the curry - if you leave it atop the rice, the bottom layer will get soggy and sad. At least if you move it to the curry, there's some flavor that soaks in. The service is polite, bathrooms clean.

The food is so good and very satisfying! If I work in NYC, I would like to pick up a dinner at this place anytime I don’t know what to have. And as Japanese tradition, they don’t accept tips either.
