We had a weekday dinner that stretched into a couple of hours of hanging out. We split a pitcher of delicious sangria and shared appetizers. The plantains with octopus were yummy and the fried pork was amazing. Needed that comfort food. We realized we wanted to hang out some more so we headed to the bar/dance floor downstairs and spent some time there drinking and dancing. Music was loud and fun. Service was very pleasant but somewhat slow. We enjoyed our experience but the restaurant upstairs was a bit loud after 7pm and not good for chatting.

Restaurant Week has begun!

It started in 1992 when the Democratic Convention was held in New York City. In order to feed the delegates, restaurants introduced a 3-course prix fixe meal to showcase the city's superb cuisine. Now this is held twice a year with 380 restaurants participating and everyone looks forward to it. With lunch for $29 and dinner for $42, this is a steal. Wine, coffee, tax and gratuity is extra. I like this event a lot and have been going for over a decade.

Yesterday Laura and I went for our RW lunch to Sazon, a Latin American restaurant located in TriBeCa. The dining area is large and was already filled with several people tucking into their lunches. Laura began her meal with Chivita, a goat cheese spread with olives, almonds and yucca chips. It looked grand on the plate and the goat cheese was mild and creamy. I chose the Summer Salad with grilled pineapple, feta cubes, cherry tomatoes, arugula with an orange dressing which was tangy. For main courses, Laura ordered the pernil which was roasted park with an accompaniment of pigeon peas rice and sweet plantains. The dish was so big that we both gaped. My flat iron steak was stringy and a little tough. It had caramelized onions on top and the menu listing of puréed carrots was missing. Instead a mound of mashed potatoes took its place. I presume the kitchen had run out of it and there was no time to make more. Tres leches cake and a creamy coconut flan were the dessert options. This cake which is a classic in South America is a sponge soaked with condensed milk, evaporated milk and heavy cream and is moist and finished with puffs of whipped cream. Both desserts were tasty.

Authentic Puerto Rican. This is the sister restaurant of Sofrito and is every part as delicious. The food is authentic Puerto Rican and the price is right for the large portions you get. I had the roast pork which is literally a 5 inch tall pork shoulder. It is certainly enough for 2.

The restaurant has a trendy look, more like a dark candle lit lounge then a restaurant. My only negative is that the place is so LOUD. The music is great but it is played at the same volume as a club. Most of my meal I wasn't able to hear what my girlfriend was saying 2 feet across the table without leaning all the way over and even then I still had to repeat myself.

Wouldn't recommend for a first date, when you would actually want to talk and get to know someone, but I still would recommend any other time.

Posted by: ash11580 Categories: Midtown East NYC Restaurants Tribeca No comments Sofrito has been a popular restaurant destination in Midtown East for quite some time now and their newer, sister restaurant Sazon in TriBeCa is no exception. Notably, Sazon is very similar to Sofrito; offering a similar menu, vibe and the same delicious Puerto Rican flavors. However, as it pertains to the ambiance, I do feel like Sazon has more of a “clubby” feel. Nevertheless, both of these upscale Puerto Rican restaurants are delicious and notably are very popular destinations for birthday dinners.
