I was at a Couchsurf meeting. Fun, fun fun. This happens every Thursday from 8 PM until is over. Good wine for $5, nice bartenders and the DJ exceptional, he got the entire bar dancing music from all over the world.

Mehanata Bulgarian Bar is not your regular run-in. Often referred to by locals as 'Mehanata', 'Gypsy Bar', and 'oh that place that had that ice cage in the basement!?'. My name is Vince and I will be your critic-to-be on probably the only Bulgarian Bar in all of NYC. What do you look for in a Bar? Maybe you have your smart phone open and you are using google maps, or maybe a Yelp app in order to locate a place of interest. It's no news to us new yorkers that people often ignore placing accurate ratings and you are left judging between the stars. Well let me tell you why I give this place 5 stars, not only because of my personal experiences, but because those shared with friends and people of various interest. Regardless on the night you choose to come by, this Bar is rarely if not never going to be low on activity. Even during off-events this Bar finds itself needing to use their coat checkers, and even bouncers. Just imagine whats in store for you're curiosity during the rapidly occurring Events. In truth I am not much of a party animal. That being said I visited a few bars and fell in love with this place. And no it's not because I myself am a Bulgarian as well. Everyone I have ever brought over to this place fell in love with it. Whats to love you ask? It's just a Bar like any other right? Wrong. Now, please pardon my run on. Lets move on to the break down on why this place deserves its rating. - As many know this place by/for is their Ice Cage. A cold refrigerated glass/metal framed section big enough to fit 4+ people inside. People would often be allowed to put on what I thought was a Soviet outfit, and would enter the legendary Ice Cage for a limited time in snatching what you want to drink off the shelfs around you. Choice of cup? A pure ice molded shot glass : ). Bottoms up. - Three sections (floors) to represent different settings. The 2nd, or top floor, is sometimes used as a VIP section for guest Bands that perform, even some famous people you would not believe have visited said place. Basically a relaxing section or a dine in. Parties are often held here as well. The first and main floor has a whole wooden/brick 'inside of a traditional Tavern' feel to it, complete with a rest section in to your left of entry, the dance floor in the center, and the 'Bar' across from your right. The bottom floor is one of my favorites (yeah the whole place is my favorite haha), it has a 2nd bar positioned right next to the Ice Cage and a lower section in the back for the more retro/dj type of dancers and get goers. Did I mention it has poles!? What kind of poles? Get drunk and find out... *cough*. Also the bathrooms are interesting, I'm not 100% on the womans bathroom for obvious reasons but the guy's have Huge open lips as urinals and what seems to be an iron framed backside bending over while holding the sink on its back. Given some wild Bar goers I'm sure you will make more then a few stops here. - The staff. Yes thats a reason. The staff do get a lot of pressure and work but they don't loose their cool under pressure. The entrance bouncer is always direct and professional at his job, never letting anything or anyone through without his knowledge. Both Bar floor's bartenders and the occasional waitresses always keep their chin up while keeping up with local humor and managing to juggle all work loads to keep everyone satisfied. The owner can sometimes be seen joining the staff and shifting between floors unseen, like a Count who is overseeing his Castle's festivities. But don't let that be odd, its a family owned Bar so its quite common any Bar you go to. - The Entertainment. I don't mean 'oh look at that one drunk girl dancing on the pole'. Not saying that doesn't happen... often. What I mean is the music, the bands, the visitors. Juggling two floors of entertainment is not easy. And both can keep each others crowds in full blast, up roaring at the festivities. You should keep this place on your favorites just so you can see whom will be featuring the entertainment for your particular night : ) - The food. Not something you get for a Bar's expectation huh? Well Mehanata keeps it's Bulgarian tradition by offering some amazing food. Do have a look or a try. The prices are fair from my experience. But for the taste... I prefer it to a restaurant any-day. - The People and guests. Most Bar's have an uneasy feeling personally said. Because most solo goers like finding a place that immediately feels warm and fun to be in. The people that often visit are sometimes local or active goers, but you will always find a few or more which have heard great things or were brought by a friend. As such when you have a room full of curiosity, only good things happen, *wink*. I can't recall the last time I brought over a friend and he didn't find someone interesting out of random. No one gets rowdy, those that do are sharply ejected without the huge crowds ever noticing them to begin with. - The Owners. Why is this important or a part? A place is no good without the owners being in their right minds, especially Bars of all places. The owner and his wife are very often found within the staff at Mehanata. However, you will be bewildered as to their location, since they flow with the crowd and festivities. But worry not, they are making sure your visit here, is a memorable one. Personal Experience: I have a story for every visit. If you happen to spot me just ask, trust me they are never boring haha. But one thing is for sure. So far neither me nor any of my friends or invites have ever had a bad experience. Mehanata is a wonderful place if you embrace your surroundings. The people flow with the music, the staff is more upbeat then the beats, the food and it's flavors are hard to find elsewhere, the events are often many and ever changing but with good flavor. So, What are you waiting for? Grab a friend, grab a random person even, and come on over to Mehanata. ~ Because fun worth having, is fun worth sharing. Something numerable at Mehanata. ~ 2/12/2015 A proud visitor of Mehanata - Vince 'The Virgo'.
