Not gonna lie, this place is great! The food is awesome, and the service is spectacular. They didn't play "Everytime We Touch" by Cascada. Instead they just played a regular ass radio station, which wasnt terrible, but could have been better if they played EWT by Cascada instead. The food and service is on point, though.
Thanks diners drive Inn and dives for turning me on to this hidden gem. It will become a regular for me!
1st time there. It was excellent. Tacos are huge and the enchiladas were good too. My wife had a margarita and it was a good strong pour. We’ll definitely visit again.
Great atmosphere and staff was very friendly. Got the California taco with their homemade pico... Amazing!! Will definitely be making the hour trip there again. Thanks guys!
The best tacos. Period. Have never been disappointed. Wish it wasn’t quite as expensive so I could go more often, but I’m always full when I leave!
Awesome food! Great service! Favorite place to go!!!
Their California toco is so good worth driving 4 hours for Make sure you go well worth It
Love this place! Usually come here with my niece and father and we enjoy it every time... we will be back.
Not many know this but, in actuality everything is made-to-order, including the Navajo style tortilla btw, with super fresh ingredients IMO. They're not meant to be Mexican traditional it's technically a Navajo taco proper with a lean towards more traditional Mexican flavors, but in their own unique style. The condiment bar is awesome, cilantro, onions, jalapeños, etc., along with salsa machines for their red or green sauce. I've always been impressed with how they make their own dough to order, and how much they go out of their way to make sure everything is fresh, but it can take a little longer to get your order at times. There's a reason they stood out to Guy Fieri when he featured them on his show. I'm a loyal fan...
The taco - although a bit doughy for my taste - was good, good enough that I'd go back for a quick bite at some point. If you're looking for something a little different - and funky, in a fun sort of way - you'll need to try California Tacos and More.
Unusual but tasty. My friends and I were in Omaha to visit the zoo, and decided to hit a Triple D spot for lunch. We were pleasantly surprised by the food we received. The California tacos were not what we had expected--the friend taco shell was a lot thicker than normal flour tortillas I am used to, almost somewhere between a standard tortilla and a pita, a bit crunchy/fried on the outside yet still soft and a bit chewy. I had the beef taco and my companions ordered the steak taco and a chicken burrito. All three were well seasoned; a good amount of flavoring without being overwhelmingly spicy for delicate midwestern palates. Service was a bit slower than I had expected, but the food was tasty enough that it was worth the extra wait. I will definitely be going back the next time I head through Omaha.
Deep Fried Goodness. This place fits with what you would expect for a place on "Diner's Drive In's and Dives", lots of American style Mexican Food, on the greasy side. The beef taco comes with very nicely seasoned ground beef on a lightly fried pita bread which they make in house, along with lettuce and a healthy portion of cheese. There is a salsa bar with liquid salsas in Margarita dispensers(cute) as well as plenty of nice fresh ingredients such as Pico de Gallo, Onion, Jalapenos, Cilantro(nice), and surprisingly Black Olives. I don't like Black Olives but they are pricey so it's nice that they let you self serve them, especially for taco salads and the like.
The taco is quite large and I didn't need the fried flour chips with bean/cheese dip that I split with my wife to fill me up. The dip was good, nothing special, and the fried flour chips were um... nicely fried, I guess, they were good, if unhealthy.
That's basically the vibe I get from this place, good old comfort food tex-mex with generous portions and reasonable prices.
Only downside: I would categorize this as a "couple times a year unless I want to die young" kind of place due to the lack of any visible healthy options on the menu.
Great tex-mex. Their chimichanga is one of the best I've had. Steak is the way to go!
Gustatory. I enjoyed the vibe of the place and the food. My spouse was more skeptical.
Great place. Up the hill from the Medical Center tucked in an eclectic neighborhood. Worth the trip to find it. Much better option than other DDD recommendation Brewburgers.
Good Tacos. I have only been here twice, but I thought the food was excellent each time. I have had the chicken tacos and the enchiladas and have had no complaints. I will visit them again.
Rough neighborhood. Go during the day. Well worth it. Food was fast and fresh.
GREAT TACOS. This place has great tacos and this is coming from a Texan! No one goes to Nebraska for mexican food, but this is definetly Nebraska good!
AWESOME. I have NO clue what the other folks who are complaining about this place were eating, but this place is the DA BOMB... The Chicken California Taco is awesome, totally reminds me of an Indian Flat Bread but in a Taco Form! The food was GREAT, service was Great, I would go back for more... Plus it was featured in Dinners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, I think Guy knows food!
Wasn't sure what to expect...the place is definitely a dive. I had the California taco with chicken. It was excellent. The taco shell of sorts was the real standout. Sort of reminded me of a softer chewier elephant ear. Highly recommended!
Awesome. I've tried California Tacos out a few times now, and have nothing but good things to say. Great food, great prices, great staff. Period.
My favorite thing by far on the menu is their guacamole. They could run a business based on selling this alone, I swear. It's always fresh and oh-so-tasty. Served with the fried flour chips (the best I've ever had), it's to die for. Their salsas (especially the green) and pico de gallo are also awesome. Last time I was there I tried a chicken enchilada. The chicken was juicy and flavorful, and the entire thing was loaded with melted cheese. Yum.
I have yet to try the California Taco, but that is next on my list.
Pricing: how people can complain about it, is beyond me. Under $5 for a taco that is enough for a meal? This isn't Taco Bell. In fact most of their items, which are big enough to be considered a meal, are between $4 and $6.
Skip out on the chain Mexican Restaurants in town, and give this local establishment a try!
Go during happy hour because it's a little overpriced in my opinion. That being said, this place is unique and pretty darn good. Eating here at least once a week has been the norm. A pitcher, chips, salsa, and a taco always hits the spot.
The Mastication Proclamation
+4.5
Good, but used to be better. I have been going to Cali Taco for many moons, and still love the place. I am starting to fear that the nostalgia is clouding my taste buds. The tacos in fact, are not as good as they used to be. Greasy, wilted lettuce, etc...Even so, getting a chicken taco and a pitcher of Dos Equis puts a smile on my face. The staff has always been cool to me, and the music is great. I will still go there...just less often than I used to. If you go during early happy hour, you can save some serious dinero.
Best Tacos Around. The California Taco is the best taco I've had in probably ten years. I like it with steak, but you do have other choices. It's not supposed to be "authentic" (read: hipster) Mexican; it's low-price, cheesy deliciousness in a giant flour shell. The chips and salsas are really good too. Best taco I've found in Omaha.
Fabulous California Taco! The place was packed w locals n now I know why! Great taco joint and great food. It is a joint---don't expect it to be upscale. Thx Guy for leading us there!!
Yummy. Get the fish tacos and ask them to grill the fish for you instead of frying it. Add some jalapenos and life is good.
Great cheap eats!. This place was an old standby when I went to Creighton around the corner. Perfect place for a good meal that is super cheap!
Checked out this place on diners drive-ins and dives. It was pretty much what we were expecting. The tacos were good. A bit thick for our liking but then again we haven't had a real "California Taco". The fresh guacamole was great! My chimichunga was GREAT. Not super doughy like the tacos were.
Something different. Good food, older neighborhood. Service is friendly and the food is flavorful. The setting is an old pharmacy that has character. You order at the cashier and the food is brought to your table.
Excellent road food. Passing through Omaha the other day I wanted to find somewhere quick to stop that wasn't a chain restaurant. I found that California Taco was featured on "Diners Drive-Ins and Dives" on the Food Network. I decided to stop and give it a try.
It's located not far off the Interstate in the Boy's Town area. It's kind of on the edge of what looks like a semi-bad neighborhood and a good neighborhood. I wasn't afraid or anything, it just looked like the area was a little run down.
The restaurant had a lot of character. It was grimy and worn-in but in a good way, in the way that you love putting on your favorite pair of jeans that are falling apart. It was comfortable.
The service was excellent, fast and friendly.
The food was great! The guacamole was very fresh tasting and the flour chips were yummy! My husband and I shared a steak, chicken, and beef taco. We liked all three, but thought the beef taco had the most flavor.
If we're ever passing through Omaha again we'll definitely stop here again.
I love Cali Taco. I'm not usually a fan of fish tacos but my husband convinced me to try the grilled tilapia taco with the fried flour shell. I'm now addicted.
Best Tacos. Best tacos in Omaha, at the best prices. Craving a taco, this is the only place to go!
I had eaten here many moons ago and remembered liking it at the time and then remembered feeling a little "off" afterwards, so why not go for two? The place is not the snazziest, but it's non-physical atmosphere is enjoyable. It's very laid back there, ro
Saw this place on Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives. Decided to stop by before basketball at Creighton this afternoon. The beef Cali Taco was really good. Almost too much dough for my liking though. I really liked the hot (green) salsa. The mild salsa was really good as well. Beans and rice are a good compliment to the tacos. I would definitely recommend this place.
Definitely worth a stop.
Great dive tucked in close to all the downtown buzz. Get the famous taco. We went old school and stayed with the ground beef. The host was amazing and brought us all sample of their pulled pork and brisket (newer on the options list for tacos.) Most definitely try the brisket taco . That was amazing. So moist and great flavor! That's some fall of your fork goodness right there.
Salsa is fire. Homemade heaven that kissed with heat. I personally preferred the salsa Verde over the red. Red is safe for you who like to keep the spice tamed.
Great group of guys working it here.
You must try their California fried taco. We got beef and chicken, they were huge tacos and so delicious.
Took a detour into Omaha to grab lunch here. A true dive, the California tacos lived up to their reputation that had them featured on Diners, Drive-ins & Dives. Cinnamon chips were also great - we ordered some and took on the road and wish we had got more!
We had a great Time as a family at California Tacos and more. We were able to order very quickly, and served within minutes. They made one mistake , but fixed immediately without a doubt. Food was SOOOO GOOD!😊. Owner came to our table, and asked how things were. No complaints here at all. Even took photo"s with the owner, and smiling along the way. If You want to enjoy yourself and have some great food, We recommend California Tacos and More, on 33rd and California Street😀😀.
Not a big fan of Mexican food but the thick homemade shell the size of a burrito sold me
This is now the only taco I'll eat in Omaha
The rice and beans steaming hot and covered w/cheese were the best I've ever had
Not gonna lie, the classic California Beef Taco is one of the better things that I have had in Omaha. I can't wait to go back and try something else. The prices are reasonable and the staff was great. Definitely like the feeling of the place, there is a lot of old meets new. Also a solid place for people watching.
Great little joint. Original Cali taco was good, stuffed full of beef. Bean dip was unique and tasty. House margarita on tap way better than the typical, it actually has alcohol in there 🙂
Their flour chips are A M A Z I N G! A coworker took me here for lunch and I will be bringing my family soon! Soooo good. The taco shells, fresh ingredients and brisket…🤤🤤🤤
It's good, but not my favorite of all time. Don't get the BBQ, stick to the Tacos and chips. Although their tater tots are a good choice.
Friendly staff and food was delicious. Preferred the steak or chicken taco to the ground beef. My only suggestion would be to add a "spicy sauce" option as both the green and red they have are rather flavorless. Will definitely be back!
An Omaha tradition. You kind of have to eat here so you ca. Talk about your experience to others about it. Fair food at great prices. Park where you can and walk it in.
First time visiting and it was outstanding! Staff was friendly and the food came out quickly, which was great because I was on a short lunch break. Prices were reasonable and the food tasted fantastic!
