Best bratwurst/bockwurst knockwurst branswieger etc I've had in California. Must love German food
Stopped at Mattern this afternoon for our favorite sandwich - a Pastrami Reuben with sauerkraut - YUM!
Their sandwiches are the best around! And as an added bonus, they have an awesome deli with a great selection of sausages, pastrami, deli meats and cheeses. One of our favorite sausages is the Gyulai - which comes in both regular and spicy - both are really good! It's kind of like a slim jim. We like to slice it up and take it on our road trips along with string cheese and crackers - it's a great on -the-go snack.
And if you get a sandwich, be sure to pick up a side to go with your sandwich - my side of choice is the coleslaw, but they also have a good German potato salad.
The sandwiches are very generous and my hubby and I usually share one sandwich.
Just a side note -- They have baked goodies - like a pretzel or turnover - but they sell out quickly.
They also have lots of German beers to choose from if you need a refreshment to have with your lunch.
Very tiny place inside with a large selection of fresh German cold cuts, sausages and cheeses. You can also have lunch inside. There are a few tables and chairs and you can order a fresh made sandwich with sides. Mybfamily and I go about once a week to stock up on our traditional foods. I highly recommend it because everything tastes so very good. Prices are average for what you would pay at grocery stores for not so equal quality.
Amazing Reuben sandwich, probably the best I have ever had. Perfect harmony of pastrami, cheese and sour kraut. Staff is very friendly and knows their sandwiches well. Can't wait to come again with a cooler to grab some sausage for cooking at home.
I haven’t been here in about 6 years but nothing has changed. Still the absolute best everything in this store. The service is always wonderful. Try the hot salami and the bacon kraut.
Nice little store, huge selection of cold cuts, salamis, sausages. The Hungarian Gyulai tastes like it was made in Hungary. Prices are reasonable. We'll be back.
Great selection of meats and cheeses and essentials to a German kitchen. The hot polish sandwich was absolutely delicious.
Fantastic place for lunch and deli products.
Went today for Krugerman Pickles, Black Forest Ham, and German Potato salad.
Great location and German Products. So good.
Also grabbed a sandwich for lunch.
Best German sausage around. Very expensive. Service charge for credit
Very friendly staff. Been looking for a place since my childhood spot closed. They had the treats i would eat as a child in Germany. All the meats you would need. Come early if you want a sandwich as they sell out quick on the weekends.
Deli sandwich and pretzel were delicious! They have a small market inside with imported meats, cheeses, and snack items. They also make their own bread which tastes so good. I’m glad I found this place, will definitely be coming back.
Great food and customer service! I got the Ruben with German potato salad. The food was sooo good I could taste the love in it. The service was quick, friendly and helpful. It was my first time there and the recommendation really hit the spot.
Visited at 3:30 on a Wednesday and there was still a line. Excellent sign ;) but Orders went fast.
The pastrami was almost buttery and very mild. The mustard was almost like a dijonaisse. Perfectly complimented the Pastrami.
And then the Rye bread - fresh.
It was Truly an excellent sandwich.
We also really liked German Potato Chips.
We will be back. Unfortunately our photos were mobile so they don’t do it justice.
I can't recommend this place enough.
Everything in here is authentically European (mostly German) and totally delicious.
For such a small space, the variety of products they keep stocked is amazing. Fresh baked goods, imported beers and snacks, deli meats, sausages, and a bunch more.
It's actually kind of crazy how low the prices are for what you can get here, and the service is nice and efficient.
Great house made sausages and deli meats to eat in as sandwiches or take home. Large selection of hard-to-find German and European groceries.
Their smoked pork chops were just beautiful. I made them with sauerkraut, mashed potatoes and apple compote. Love my German heritage!
Mattern is probably my favorite of the German/European delis in the area. They have what is seemingly an ever-more elusive combination of quality, value, and vibe. Their sandwiches are delicious and feel like they're twice the size of the competition. Fresh baked goods are available and come from a nearby German bakery. I almost always pick up bread, a pastry, and a pretzel to be shared with the family. Their fresh bread makes a huge difference on your sandwich, trust me.
Speaking of their sandwiches, a cold cut with everything is ~$10, which is comparable to Old World and Continental, but it's a more substantial offering. Globe Deli is now at a ridiculous $16 for their cold cut sandwich. Upland Deli is cheaper ($7-8), but it feels like a sandwich my mom used to make when I was in elementary school.
Potato salad is always flavorful, and the deli cooler is well-stocked with fresh sausages, cheese, and cold cuts.
It's a smaller place with a good selection of items, on par with Continental, Upland, and Globe, but smaller than Old World.
Everyone there is friendly and service moves quickly. Google Pay and other NFC options mean I'm on my way quickly after being rung up, with no hassles.
So while I can recommend Continental Deli in La Habra and the German Deli at Old World, Mattern continues to be my first choice.
