When every other pub and tavern in the area had a long wait, this one was empty. A bit concerting, but hungry beggars can't be choosers, so in we went. We weren't disappointed! The service was quick (but not rushed), helpful, and pleasant. The French onion soup was absolutely out of this world. The menu was small, but varied, and nothing disappointed. The beer list was on the small side, but had a few reliable favorites mixed with some less-standard options. Overall, a fantastic experience that I will happily repeat.
Great FREE Music. I am a huge live music fan and this place is the best. The live music starts early (not too early) and ends late (but not too late). I love starting with dinner in the dining room then relocating to the bar for a nightcap and dessert. The food will knock your socks off (it's the best in the area if you like seafood... or burgers... or wings... or vegetarian dishes... or steaks)! But their piano player steals the show every time. I realized, after speaking with him, that I saw him on Bourbon Street with an entire band about 10 years ago. He plays all over the area but usually for a cover charge BUT NOT HERE! I once saw a singer, who was dining, jump up at his request and they did a great version of Summertime. You cannot be in Northwest Philly and not check this place out! It's about time someone had quality food at a fair price.
A bit of oo-la-la without being French. Under its new ownership and with a total makeover, the ambiance reminds me of the kind of cozy restaurant you would be lucky to find by chance in a small French city. The menu is varied but dependable, but not with food-names you never heard of. Drinks are great, if a tad pricey due in part to Phila's outrageous drinks taxes. Service at lunch (thanks, Wendy!) is friendly and professional. Even the music list is a treat--iit takes a fine ear to mix Django Reinhardt with Norah Jones and Mr. Mozart and make it work.
A Gem of a Place in All Ways. This is a terrific place, with atmosphere, a truly interesting array of great food at extremely reasonable prices, and a wonderful choice of modestly priced wines and beers. I've had bar food, full dinners, and specials there.... imaginative, accomplished chef; warm and knowledgeable service. When they have music, it's first rate. Try the specials, but I've yet to have a meal that wasn't delicious. This is a gem of a place, and the combination of A+ food, A+service, A+ atmosphere, and A+ warmth (and A+ music) is a delight.
Great neighborhood tavern!. The Tavern on the hill is in my opinion one of the least recognized places on the hill and easily one of the best. One might think that Chestnut Hill is full of small neighborhood bars, but in fact it is sadly lacking. Tavern has a great combination of food, beer, and atmosphere. The food is of particular note, it is easily the best pub fare food on the hill and pricing is extremely reasonable. The real upside to me is that the chef puts on a real high class dinner menu for those who want more of a restaurant experience. The staff is very friendly and attentive, they will go out of their way to make your experience there the best that it can be. In short Tavern is one of if not the best bar on the hill and easily surpasses its well known neighbor in many ways.
Friendly staff, great food, live entertainment, a decent beer selection.
Mixed feelings. Night 1: had mussels in tomato gravy followed by the best cheese steak I ever ate--great meat and great roll. Wonderful fries. Server (female) was pleasant and attentive.
Night 2: decent cheeseburger, good fries, but one dining partner's stuffed mushrooms contained leeks that were sandy (unwashed) and therefore inedible. When server (male) told of this, he suddenly got sullen, didn't apologize, threw coffees at us, reached across the front of members of our party of 7 to clear and to pick up creamers etc, "forgot" one coffee order, made us feel unwelcome. He seems to have (unannounced) comped the two coffees he brought, but instead should have acknowledged the bad dish and comped it.
Cute place, new management or ownership, nice menu, we'd like to make it one of "our" places, but...

10 Beers on Draft, wonderful wine selection, and bartenders that can craft the most delicious Martinis and mixed drinks
Yummy yummy, what a transformation!. From a horrible old pit to an informally swanky young bar with music and great food...how great is that? Great burgers and out-of-sight fries, a goat cheese/beet/carrot salad that is to die for, crab cakes that are a preview of NIRVANA, and an after-9PM menu that is '9 after 9'-- and music several nights a week--topped off by bartenders who recognize you, remember your name, and friends you bump into who buy you a glass of wine!! I'll be back...
We wanted to try something new, so we searched a place in chestnut hill (from Conshy). We were not disappointed! Food was delicious! Chicken melts in the mouth, grilled cheese and soup was outstanding, and the burger was cooked perfectly. Would recommend, and we will be returning!
Amazing little tavern!! Food was delicious, good prices and the bartender/server did a fantastic job! Wish I lived closer…this would definitely be a regular spot!
Still one of our favorite places we had the luxury my wife and I of a second visit/date night at tavern on the hill and just like the 1st visit Our experience was above and beyond Are server Melissa was great and a pleasure to interact with we saw our buddy Jeff who we met the 1st visit moving about still making sure the customers were good and the food needless to say absolutely delicious still As well as the atmosphere just a local jewel right in the neighborhood Thank you for another great evening and experience till next time....
Love this place. Super small and quaint but really makes you feel the historic building that you’re in and it’s intimate setting makes it feel homey. It also gives top notch food and certainly top notch ambiance. Its small bar is also well-fitted for a conversation before or after a meal. Really just a great atmosphere and meal which makes it an awesome restaurant.
My wife and I loved the classic decor. It reminded us of a cozy pub in Ireland. And just like the nostalgic atmosphere, there was something understated and refined about the food. The crab soup was delightful. I had the tuna melt and my wife had the turkey, cranberry, and brie sandwich. Overall, I enjoyed how the chef experimented with classic American dishes and sandwiches. Their attention to detail and friendly staff will bring us back. Pictured is a deconstructed key lime pie. Highly recommend this place.
A nice quaint restaurant, frequently playing authentic jazz. Highly recommended soups (and good conversation) by local residents, as well as wonderfully prepared tavern drinks
prepared on Saturdays by Wendy. Good prices and welcoming hospitable atmosphere. Wendy on weekends and Naomi on weekdays, well staffed restaurant. Hope it remains a staple in the neighborhood.
Warm and quiet atmosphere thank for this wonderful experience. My sister InLaw celebrated her 81 first birthday at your establishment.

Very nice place. Very good cheesesteak. They don't kill you on the price. But this cheesesteak was oily. Very nice bar. Nice heavy wood decor. I guess it's what you would expect for Chestnut Hill. But not a killer Chestnut Hill price. I really want to love this cheesesteak but it was oily. The bartender said they have a pepper medley / concoction so I got it on my cheesesteak. I assume the oil came from that. The roll was good and it held together nicely. The meat was a nice thicker slice and more of a shred than a chop and it’s flavor came through in a very flavorful cheesesteak. The pepper medley/concoction was very flavorful, nice big thick chunks like I like but where the heck did all that oil come from. I went with provolone cheese and I'm really glad. This cheesesteak needed a heavy cheese. I am pretty sure I had a very good experience but where did all that darn oil come from.
This place was absolutely phenomenal. From the service, to the food, to the exceptional environment, I'd recommend it for a lovely date night or even a lovely after work spot. I recommend the baby back ribs and the mozzarella sticks!
Awesome, helpful, lovely staff. A cozy little book of a bar with low lighting and soft old music. The food is phenomenal, do yourself a favor and have a stop in- you'll fall in love
