I use a (5) 4 point rating scale for food. It's a 1 if you don't particularly care to finish your meal. 2 means it's pretty good. 3 means it's quite tasty (you're likely to go back, for instance). 4 is reserved for those moments when you take your first bite, the heavens open up, angels start singing, and you just need to take a moment to process the experience and wait for your brain to catch up to your tastebuds. 5's can only be awarded months later, if you're STILL thinking about that moment. As you can imagine, 5's are few and far between. This place has ruined fish and chips for me forever. It's been more than a year since my last visit (I, alas, live nowhere remotely close by), and I still think about my last meal there fairly regularly. The ambiance is pretty standard sports-bar type, although the live jazz music really makes it stand-out. It's certainly not a formalwear type of place. But, it's comfortable and the service is friendly (although the food is so good that I tend to forget the other details). I hope this place stays open forever, because it's comforting to think of getting to go back when next I visit the Pacific Northwest. And yes, I would travel to Portland from, say, Seattle, to have dinner here. It's just that good.

It's always great! My wife loves the classic halibut with malt vinegar. I can't stay away from the catfish, just perfect. The slaw is very refreshing, the fries are done just right. The only think that would make it better for me would be if I could get some fried okra with the catfish. Instead of walking over tonight we ordered from Grubhub, and it was just as hot and crispy as eating at the truck. If you crave some good fish and chips, or some catfish that anyone south of Amarillo would find more than acceptable, do stop and try The Original Halibut's for yourself, you won't be disappointed!

Best fish and chips anywhere. That is no exaggeration. Halibut, cod, salmon, catfish, sometimes marlin or ahi, and others. Two big things stand out: Dave is the best fish buyer anywhere, 100% hands on. And his batter is incredible, always very thin, it brings out, rather than masks, the flavor of the fish. He uses the healthiest, low saturated fat cooking oil available, always fresh and clean. Excellent chowder, too.

Great place, great food, and Dave, the owner, is a real treat. Sadly places like Halibuts that are closing takes away the uniqueness of Portland. You will be missed.

Both the ahi AND the halibut fish and chips were amazing (I had to try both!). Ditto for the clam chowder. I grew up in New England, where the restaurants are on the oceanside and have boats tied to them. THIS is THAT good. After years of living in Las Vegas, I don't miss a chance to get fresh seafood when I travel to certain cities, and Portland is always high on my list. This is my new go-to, made even more so by Dave's friendly demeanor, he clearly loves his business, and I do too! Extra points for the strong, strong cocktail sauce that may cause a global horseradish shortage, but it's worth it!

Best Alaskan Halibut fish and chips period. 4 piece halibut w coconut shrimp and couple sodas w tip will run $40. Worth it in my opinion. I am not a chowder fan but his chowder is damn good too. And you don't have to drive to the beach! Again...can't go wrong here. Delicious.

Oh my gosh! Absolutely amazing! The halibut is super fresh and completely melts and the outer crust on the halibut is so crispy. One of the best halibuts I have had in a very long time. The owner is super nice and very honest. Definitely try the oyster shooter it will wake you up!

After my adventures with baris and JJs in the piedmont food carts (see my other reviews) I said to hell with it and got what my wife was having even though I worked for a seafood house for 6 years. Cod 2 piece, came quick and hot and seasoned perfectly. Only complaints is cocktail was like 80% horseradish, and slaw wasn't salted enough but it's a fine line because if you over salt it pulls more moisture from the slaw. I also would've liked my fish done a little more since it was cold out since the moisture caused it to get soggy quickly but it was done and more of a preference thing. Good job for someone who doesn't like seafood that much

FRIENDLY FRIED FABULOUSNESS I’ve stuck to the cod and halibut here, but want to try their clam chowder real soon. Their fries are always fried fresh to order so they are tasty, but are nothing special coming from a freezer bag. Sauces are very tasty and I highly recommend the tartar sauce.

Great spot to grab a pint in a nearby beer cart, and get yourself some truly delicious fish and chips. Don't forget the chowder! I could eat a gallon of that chowder. Nice and crispy batter on the fish, fries are as they should be. Friendly staff! Will be back!

Fantastic fish, best fish and chips in Portland. Some might consider it a bit spendy, but the food is high quality and very worth it. I love the salmon. The food cart pod is really enjoyable to eat at too.

First off, huge shoutout to the owner Dave of 18 years. I love bro's passion and you are an amazing person and can cook the hell outta some fish. I literally stumbled upon this gem on a hunt for some good chowder, but was enamored by the quality of the Amazing fresh Alaskan halibut. You can definitely taste the difference between this fresh and what others call "fresh". Wonderful flavor and the breading on the fish was just right to compliment ALLL the natural flavor of the fish. Also bought 3 cups of the best CLAM chowder in PDX. Dave was right, after eating that fish he is definitely gonna meet the rest of my family cause I will be bringin EVERYBODY through. 10/10 🔥😋💯👍🏿

Born and raised PNW, this is the best chowder on the coast- I look forward to it every trip since it's always the perfect finishing meal I have while in Portland. I ate most of it before I remembered to take a picture, it's that good!!!

All menu items are excellent, but my favorite is the Halibut and Chips. The cocktail sauce is sneaky hot! The Cole slaw the best.

This is the best fish and chips I've had in the US, and I've had alot in my time throughout the UK and Australia. Highly recommend the halibut and get the chowder! Apparently they get invited to compete nationwide. Owner is absolutely lovely. You'll love dining here.

Delicious fish and chips, served piping hot. I don’t usually go for this meal, but my husband talked me into it and I am glad he did. Excellent gluten-free batter!
